Tokushima trip planning: divide city, Naruto and Iya days

Stay near Tokushima Station for Awa Odori performances and city views from Bizan. Spend a day in eastern Naruto for whirlpools, or compare a western Iya stay for the vine bridge and gorge. Naruto journeys use return buses; the Wakimachi and Iya itineraries below use a hire car.

Which interests you most: performances, strait or valley?

Choose Awa Odori Kaikan to watch and learn dance, or Bizan for city and river views from above. Naruto has strait whirlpools; western Iya and Oboke have a vine bridge and gorge views from a boat. Compare Wakimachi for historic house walks. City sights and Naruto can use buses, but the Wakimachi and Iya itineraries below need a hire car.

Itineraries by trip length

First choose whether to keep accommodation near Tokushima Station, stay a night in Naruto or move to Iya. Naruto uses return buses; the Wakimachi and Iya driving itineraries require a booked hire car. For western stays, arrange meals and car-return conditions.

2 days / 1 night

Option A stays near the station for a performance and Bizan on separate days; B stays in Naruto first and visits the strait on day two. Choose whether city culture and views or the strait are your priority.

3 days / 2 nights

Both options stay two nights in Tokushima: A visits Naruto by return bus; B hires a car for Wakimachi's historic streets. Bizan on B's final day is optional, so compare its cost with a show-only plan.

4 days / 3 nights

Option A keeps city accommodation for separate Naruto and Wakimachi days; B stays one night in Tokushima, then two in Iya. B drives to the cruise and bridge on separate days and returns the car in Tokushima on the final day.

5 days / 4 nights

Option A stays three eastern nights then one in Iya; B starts in the west and returns east. A combines the final bridge visit with car return. B visits free Oboke gorge views without the cruise and chooses either a show or Bizan on the final day.

Before choosing buses, a car and your budget

Match Naruto tides with return buses

Choose return buses to suit the day's whirlpool-viewing tide times and Uzunomichi's last admission. Weekday and holiday timetables differ. If leaving for another city, allow travel from the station via accommodation to your actual departure point.

Adult return park buses cost JPY 780 from Naruto Station or JPY 1,740 from Tokushima Station. Accommodation–station travel and airport and onward transport cost extra.

Drive for Wakimachi and Iya; compare buses for a bridge-only visit

Two-night B and three-night A for Wakimachi, and three-night B and four-night A/B for western stays, use hire cars. Check driving times using accommodation addresses and arrange pickup and return. Hire, insurance, fuel, tolls and parking are extra to admission subtotals; Yumebutai parking is JPY 500 per vehicle.

For Kazurabashi alone without a car, continue from Oboke by bus or taxi. Plan separately around return buses, JR and accommodation transfers. Three-night B and four-night A return the car in Tokushima on the final day; move or omit the bridge for an early departure.

Do not deduct Naruto or Iya bus fares for a rail pass

JR Shikoku's October 2026 revision notice covers the All Shikoku Rail Pass's railway and tram scope and excludes bus services. Do not count Naruto Park or Oboke–Kazurabashi buses as automatically included. Hire cars, performances, ropeways, the bridge and cruise have not been discounted in these subtotals.

Trip-length costs do not apply pass purchases or discounts. If you already have a pass, compare its purchase and validity dates and actual journeys against official information.

From Tokushima to Wakimachi and Iya

Choose Tokushima ramen in the city

Tokushima ramen has brown broth with sweet-savoury pork-bone soy flavours, yellow broth using chicken bones and vegetables, and a comparatively light white style. Pork and raw egg toppings vary by shop. Choose a style from the food guide, then check the restaurant's opening days and last orders for a pre-show meal.

Dinner in Iya

Check the destination and camera subject first

The Tokushima camera list above includes Iya Kazurabashi and the area outside Wakimachi's Yoshida Residence. Iya Kazurabashi differs from the Oku-Iya double vine bridges; Koboke viewpoint footage differs from the Oboke cruise. Do not choose whirlpool times from strait footage alone: check the official tide table.

Should I include both Naruto and Iya in two days?

You do not need to. Naruto is the eastern strait; Iya is the western valley. For a short stay, focus on either city performances and Bizan or Naruto. Plan Iya as a separate western stay to reduce travel pressure.

Can I deduct Naruto bus fares if I have an All Shikoku pass?

The October 2026 revision excludes bus services, so budget for Naruto buses separately even with a pass. Western hire-car costs are also separate. Pass discounts are not applied to itinerary totals.
