Tokushima travel: how to split the city, Naruto, and Iya?
Stay near Tokushima Station for Awa Odori performances and city views from Mount Bizan. Spend a day in Naruto to the east for whirlpools, or compare a stay in Iya to the west for a vine bridge and valley scenery. The Naruto options use round-trip buses; the itineraries connecting Wakimachi and Iya below use a rental car.
Performances, the strait, or the valley?
For dance and a chance to learn it, consider Awa Odori Kaikan; for city and river views from the mountain, consider Bizan. Naruto offers tidal whirlpools, while Iya and Oboke to the west offer a vine bridge and gorge views from a boat. Compare Wakimachi for a slow walk among historic houses. City and Naruto visits can use buses; the Wakimachi and Iya itineraries below require a rental car.
Itineraries by trip length
Choose whether to keep a base near Tokushima Station, spend a night in Naruto, or move to Iya. Naruto uses round-trip buses; the Wakimachi and Iya driving options assume a rental car. Western stays also require planning meals and car-return conditions.
2 days, 1 night
A gives the performance and Bizan a day each from a station-area base; B stays in Naruto on Day 1 and visits the strait on Day 2. Choose city culture and views or the strait as your main focus.
3 days, 2 nights
Spend two nights in Tokushima: A takes a Naruto bus round trip; B drives to Wakimachi’s historic street. Bizan is optional on B’s last day, so compare its cost with the performance-only option.
4 days, 3 nights
A visits Naruto and Wakimachi on separate days from the same city lodging; B spends one night in Tokushima and two in Iya. B drives to the western boat and vine bridge and returns the car in Tokushima on the final day.
5 days, 4 nights
A spends three nights in the east and one in Iya; B starts in the west and returns east. A’s final day combines the bridge with car return. B includes free Oboke gorge views, excludes the boat, and chooses either a performance or Bizan on the final day.
Where should you stay?
Tokushima Station area
Stay near Tokushima Station to combine city performances with Naruto. It offers connections to Naruto buses and transport to the airport or other cities. Awa Odori Kaikan requires a walk from the station.

Before choosing buses, a car, and your budget
Match Naruto’s tides to your return bus
Choose both buses around the tide times for whirlpool viewing and Uzu no Michi’s admission cutoff. Weekday and holiday timetables differ. If continuing to another city that day, allow time at the station to reach your lodging and departure stop.
Adult park bus fares are ¥780 round-trip from Naruto Station or ¥1,740 from Tokushima Station. Travel between lodging and the station and to the airport or next city costs extra.

Use a car for Wakimachi and Iya; compare buses for Kazurabashi alone
The Wakimachi options, 2-night B and 3-night A, and western stays, 3-night B and 4-night A/B, use a rental car. Check driving times using lodging addresses and arrange pickup and return times. Rental, insurance, fuel, tolls, and parking are separate from facility subtotals; Yumebutai’s ¥500 parking charge is per vehicle.
For Kazurabashi alone without a car, continue from Oboke by bus or taxi. Plan a separate itinerary around return buses, JR connections, and hotel pickup. For 3-night B and 4-night A, which return the car in Tokushima on the final day, move the bridge visit earlier or omit it if your departure is early.

Do not subtract Naruto or Iya buses because you have a rail pass
JR Shikoku’s October 2026 revision notice describes the ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass’s rail and streetcar coverage and excludes bus services. Do not assume Naruto Park or Oboke–Kazurabashi buses are included. No discounts have been applied to rental cars, performances, ropeways, bridge admission, or boat fares in these subtotals.
Itinerary costs do not include a pass purchase or pass discounts. If you already have a pass, compare its purchase date, validity dates, and your actual routes against official guidance.

Near Tokushima Station and below Bizan
A Tokushima Station base connects city performances with Naruto buses. Walk from the station to Awa Odori Kaikan. The theater is on the second floor and the Bizan Ropeway on the fifth, so allow separate time for the show and views.

Stay in Iya for the valley
For the vine bridge and time in the valley, stay in Iya. These itineraries use rental cars. Finish sightseeing in time for dinner at your lodging and allow time to reach the car-return office the next day. For bus travel, plan a separate itinerary around lodging pickup and round-trip services.

Tokushima Station to Naruto Strait
Facility guidance lists about 80 minutes on the Naruto Park bus from Tokushima Station. Get off at Naruto Park and walk about five minutes to Uzu no Michi. Plan the visit around tides and confirm the boarding location and service back to Tokushima Station.

Naruto Station to the park
From lodging near Naruto Station, choose the Naruto Park leg separately. Adult fares are ¥390 each way or ¥780 round-trip. This differs from Tokushima Station’s ¥1,740 round trip. Check both directions in the weekday or weekend timetable for your date.
Tokushima to Wakimachi and Iya
For historic streets and the valley together, choose a rental-car route via Wakimachi to Iya. After Udatsu Street and the Yoshida Residence area, reach your lodging before check-in and dinner deadlines. Travel from other cities and vehicle costs are separate from facility and transport subtotals.

Choose Tokushima ramen in the city
Tokushima ramen has a brown style with sweet-salty pork-bone soy broth, a yellow style using chicken bones and vegetables, and a relatively light white style. Pork and raw-egg toppings vary by shop. Choose a style in the food guide, then check opening days and last orders at your pre-show restaurant.

Dinner in Iya
Having dinner at your Iya lodging after the bridge or valley visit can reduce travel. Check meal inclusion and arrival deadlines when booking. Food is separate from admission and sightseeing transport subtotals.

Naruto buses and valley admission
Tokushima Station–Naruto Park adult round-trip buses at ¥1,740 plus Uzu no Michi admission at ¥510 total ¥2,250. In the west, budget Kazurabashi at ¥550 and the boat at ¥1,800 separately. The ¥500 bridge parking fee is per vehicle; compare it with rental, fuel, lodging, and meals separately from per-person admission.

Before you go: practical checks and FAQs
Do I need both Naruto and Iya in a one-night trip?
No. Naruto’s strait is in the east and Iya’s valley in the west. For a short trip, focus on city performances and Bizan or on Naruto. A separate itinerary with a western overnight stay can reduce the travel burden for Iya.
Can I subtract Naruto bus fares if I have an ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass?
The October 2026 revision notice excludes buses, so budget Naruto fares separately even with the pass. Western rental-car costs are also separate. No pass discounts have been applied to itinerary costs.
