Arrival at KMI → Miyazaki Station / City Hotel / Aoshima
Miyazaki Airport to Miyazaki and Aoshima
Choose JR for a hotel near Miyazaki Station, or a bus from stop ① for Tachibanadori. For Aoshima, go south on a regular bus from stop ② or change trains at Tayoshi; there is no need to double back through the city. For a late arrival, check your destination's last departure and the hotel's check-in deadline.
This guide starts at Miyazaki Bougainvillea Airport · 宮崎ブーゲンビリア空港 (KMI). City-center hotels and Aoshima beach hotels lie in different directions.

From arrivals to the train, bus or taxi
- Follow the signs for your actual arriving flight. International passengers complete immigration, baggage collection and customs before entering the first-floor arrivals lobby; domestic passengers enter it after baggage collection.
- JR: follow JR 乗り場 toward the building's west side. The first-floor airport map places JR on the domestic-counter side and buses on the international-counter side. Leave toward the station, buy a ticket if needed and follow gate and platform signs. Do not join the bus line or go upstairs to flight departures.
- Bus: follow バス乗り場 to the outdoor stops near the international counters. Stop ① serves Miyako City, Tachibanadori and Miyazaki Station; stop ② serves Aoshima on buses toward Nichinan or Obi. Stops ③ for highway buses and ④ for Seagaia are separate.
- Taxi: follow タクシー乗り場 to the stand in front of the terminal. It is separate from the JR station and bus stop ②.
Ask at first-floor information if your arrival route differs, or if you need an accessible route with a wheelchair or large bags.
Bus payment and baggage
Regular buses do not take seat reservations. With cash, take a numbered ticket on boarding and pay when exiting; with a supported transit IC card, tap both on boarding and exiting. Exact payment is required. The onboard change machine does not accept ¥5,000 or ¥10,000 bills or new ¥500 coins, so bring suitable coins or small bills, or top up your card beforehand.
The free-baggage limits are 10 kg, 0.027 m³ and 1 meter in length. Larger items may require a child-fare-equivalent baggage fee; items exceeding 30 kg, 0.25 m³ or 2 meters cannot be carried. Even an item within these limits may be refused on a crowded bus. Keep aisles clear and ask the operator before bringing several suitcases; a suitable taxi may be an alternative. Pick-up areas, stations, drop-off areas, and lodging areas are shown on actual topographic maps from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI). The dotted lines are lines that describe the direction of travel by means of transportation and are not actual road, rail, or pedestrian routes. The airport pick-up area and downtown hotel area are indicated as representative locations, and individual bays and hotel entrances can be checked using the official guide map and walking directions. The shrine pin points to the entrance area on the mainland side of Yayoibashi instead of the main shrine in the center of the island.
JR to Miyazaki and the limited express fare exception
At the airport station, buy a ticket to Miyazaki or use a supported transit IC card. Board a Miyazaki-bound train, travel through Minami-Miyazaki and get off at Miyazaki Station. Choose the east or west exit for your hotel.
The ¥400 paper base fare already includes the ¥130 airport-line surcharge. Do not add it again.
Within the Miyazaki–Tayoshi/Miyazaki Airport section only, you can use non-reserved seats in an ordinary-class limited express car with a base-fare ticket. This exception does not cover reserved seats, Green Cars or limited express travel beyond Miyazaki. Check the car markings before choosing a seat. Aoshima is outside the exception's section, and the sightseeing limited express Umisachi Yamasachi requires a separate reserved-seat ticket.
Transit IC cards and train baggage
The SUGOCA Miyazaki area expanded to Aoshima on January 17, 2026. Supported travel within the area includes Miyazaki, Miyazaki Airport, Tayoshi and Aoshima. Check ticket conditions for travel south of Aoshima or across other IC areas rather than assuming one card covers the whole journey.
JR allows up to two carry-on items, each within a combined length, width and height of 250 cm, a maximum length of 2 meters and a weight of 30 kg. Carry your own bags and keep aisles and doors clear. These train limits do not apply to buses.
City hotels: Miyazaki Station or Tachibanadori?
Hotels near Miyazaki Station
Follow arrivals → airport station → Miyazaki Station → hotel. The train ride takes about 10–15 minutes, with waiting added separately. Check your hotel's east- or west-side address before leaving the station to avoid crossing back with bags.
Alternatively, take a Miyazaki Station-bound bus at stop ①. The bus reaches the station, not every hotel's entrance.
Hotels near Tachibanadori
Take a bus at stop ① and get off at the nearest stop in Tachibanadori 1-, 2- or 3-chome. Fares to 2- and 3-chome are ¥500, with a ride of about 17–24 minutes. The faster Airport Liner serves the airport, Miyako City, Tachibanadori 1-, 2- and 3-chome, and Miyazaki Station; regular buses make additional stops.
A JR ride to Miyazaki Station leaves a further walk, bus or taxi trip to a Tachibanadori hotel. With bags or in rain, compare an airport bus stopping nearer your address. The link below shows an example walk; replace its destination with your own hotel.
Miyazaki Station west exit → Tachibanadori 3-chome ↗Miyako City and Minami-Miyazaki Station are separate
Miyako City · 宮交シティ is a bus terminal; Minami-Miyazaki Station · 南宮崎駅 is the JR station to its east. After getting off an airport bus at Miyako City, walk around the south side of the building toward JR, following the official map's station signs and crosswalks. This is a street-level walk, not a same-platform transfer. Official terminal-to-JR directions ↗
Miyako City → Minami-Miyazaki Station ↗Aoshima: go south without doubling back through the city
Aoshima · 青島 lies south of the airport. For a beach hotel or shrine visit, compare the southbound bus or Tayoshi train connection instead of going north to Miyazaki Station first.
Direct regular bus from stop ②
Follow arrivals → stop ② → a bus toward 日南・飫肥 (Nichinan/Obi) → Aoshima stop → your hotel, beach or shrine. The adult fare is ¥610, the ride takes about 24 minutes and seat reservations are not required. ANA Holiday Inn's stop comes before Aoshima; use the hotel's official access instructions if you are staying there.
The October 1, 2026 timetable lists daily airport departures at 10:09, 11:39, 13:59, 18:06 and 19:19, plus a weekday-only 15:49 departure. The last daily bus is 19:19 → Aoshima 19:43. Check that your chosen service stops at Aoshima even if its final destination is farther south.
The ¥700 seasonal shuttle operated July 1–September 30. Its timetable and fare do not apply to these regular October buses.
Regular JR trains: change at Tayoshi
Buy an Aoshima ticket or check your IC-card coverage, then travel airport station → Tayoshi → Aoshima. The rides take about two minutes and 19–23 minutes respectively; the transfer wait is additional. Regular trains do not run directly from the airport to Aoshima.
At Tayoshi, leave the Miyazaki-bound train and take a train stopping at Aoshima, with a destination such as Aoshima, Aburatsu, Nango or Shibushi. Confirm its stops and platform in the official timetable. A connection at Minami-Miyazaki is possible for some trains, but going north first changes the time and fare; it is not equivalent to the Tayoshi route.
The sightseeing limited express Umisachi Yamasachi · 海幸山幸 has an airport 10:00 → Aoshima 10:21 service in its published timetable. It does not run every day; all seats are reserved and require advance reservation. Check its operating calendar, direction and fare. The non-reserved limited express exception does not apply.
From the station or bus stop to the beach and shrine
Aoshima Station and the Aoshima bus stop are separate places. From the station, follow shrine and beach signs east toward the approach. From the bus stop, use the crosswalk to reach that same approach. Continue to the mainland entrance of Yayoi Bridge, cross to the island and walk to Aoshima Shrine · 青島神社.
The tourism organization gives about 800 meters or 10 minutes on foot from JR Aoshima Station to the shrine. The map pin marks the mainland bridge entrance, not the shrine's main building. A sandy section remains after the bridge, so consider bags and wheelchair access separately. Vehicles are not allowed on the island. Visiting hours run from 06:00 to sunset; do not plan a late-night visit.
For a beach hotel, follow the hotel's entrance directions instead of the shrine route. ANA Holiday Inn Resort Miyazaki lists its own bus stop and access from Kodomonokuni Station. Confirm hotel check-in and any reserved transfer; simply reaching Aoshima does not bring you to every hotel.
Last buses, last trains and a late-arrival backup
Below are the departure directions from the airport. We compared the revised bus timetable on October 1, 2026 with the JR October 5th, 10th, 11th, and 12th timetable. If Saturday is a public holiday, check the bus holiday conditions.
| Destination/Transportation | Last departure from the airport | Things to check when arriving and connecting |
|---|---|---|
| Bus No. 1 to Miyazaki Station | Weekdays 19:46 Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays 19:55 | Based on arrival at the station at 20:12 on weekdays and at 20:21 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. |
| Miyako City/Tachibana Dori Bus No. 1 | Daily at 21:20 | Miyako City 21:31, 1-chome 21:37, 2-chome 21:38, 3-chome 21:40. It does not stop at Miyazaki Station. |
| JR to Miyazaki Station | Daily 21:55 Airport Station | Regular 768M, arrives at Miyazaki Station 22:05 |
| Regular bus No. ② to Aoshima | Daily 19:19 | Arrive at Aoshima stop at 19:43; Separate walk to hotel |
| JR transfer to Aoshima | Daily 21:55 Airport Station | Arrival at Tayoshi 21:57 → Departure at 22:42 → Aoshima 23:01. 45-minute transfer wait. |
The 21:55 airport train does not reach Aoshima around 22:00: this connection includes a 45-minute wait at Tayoshi and a final walk. With a late arrival or large bags, compare a taxi to your hotel. Check the nighttime walking route and keep your hotel's contact details ready.
Boarding the last bus cannot be guaranteed based on the aircraft landing time alone. After completing immigration and baggage pickup, check the actual arrival time at the boarding point and the day's operation information. Do not assume that a local bus or JR train will wait for a delayed flight.
If public transportation is over, take a taxi in front of the airport
Please show your accommodation’s Japanese address and reservation screen at the official taxi stand in front of the terminal. The airport lists taxi assistance staff hours as 8:30–21:30, but this does not guarantee dispatch after that time. If you plan to arrive late, please contact airport information or the official taxi company in advance for available taxi times.
Miyako Taxi's February 2026 rate schedule is 600 yen for the first 1km for regular vehicles, and 100 yen for every 285m thereafter. Low speed and waiting time also affect the rate. A fixed total amount to the city and Aoshima was not provided. Check with the company about late-night conditions, reservation/call costs, whether toll roads are used, and which vehicle type and payment method is suitable for large luggage. The travel distances for city hotels and beach hotels are different, so the same estimates should not be applied.
There are conditions for reserved taxi transfers from confirmed hotels, such as being for hotel guests only and limited vehicle availability. Please distinguish it from regular airport pickup, and in case of flight delay, contact the operator directly to check time change/cancellation conditions.
Changing flights does not automatically change hotel, train, or rental car reservations. If you have reserved a rental car, please check again on the reservation page for the company's actual pickup location, business office shuttle/final reception, driving qualification, insurance, and delay contact conditions.
If you cannot use the JR ticket you purchased due to a flight delay
An unused regular ticket can be changed once to the same ticket type within its validity period without a change fee; any fare difference is settled. Refunding an unused regular ticket carries a ¥220 fee.
Changes to reserved seats must be requested prior to departure from the boarding station, and once the designated train departs, the reserved seat ticket becomes invalid and cannot be refunded. Discounted products and online reservations may be subject to separate seller and product conditions.
Do not confuse flight delays with the JR train's own cancellation/delay refund policy, and contact the station or reservation office before departure.
Changes/refunds/missing the designated train before JR official use ↗If there is a typhoon or heavy rain, check each operation information separately.
The suspension of flights, JR, and buses cannot be determined based on weather alone. Check the actual flight number, JR operation information, and Miyazaki Transportation notices of the airline and airport. Beach and bridge access is subject to local controls and facility guidance.
Official tickets and payment
The following is the operator’s official usage/purchase guide and is not an affiliate link. Regular JR tickets and route buses are different from tourist express reserved seats, reserved pickup, and rental car products.
For general tickets, check your destination at the airport station and purchase them, and for buses, follow the cash and transport IC card boarding procedures above. For the tourist express, check the operation date, direction, seat designation, and change/cancellation conditions before making a reservation. Miyazaki and Aoshima transfer FAQ
How do I get from Miyazaki Airport to Miyazaki Station?
Follow first-floor JR signs to the airport station and take a Miyazaki-bound train: ¥400, about 10–15 minutes. Alternatively, take a station-bound bus from stop ①: ¥530, about 25–30 minutes. The 21:20 Sumiyoshi-bound bus does not serve Miyazaki Station.
Should I choose a train or bus for a city hotel?
Choose JR first for a hotel near Miyazaki Station. For Tachibanadori, bus stop ① provides a direct ride to 1-, 2- or 3-chome without doubling back from the station. The adult fare to 2- and 3-chome is ¥500. Check the final walk for your hotel's address.
Can I travel directly to Aoshima?
A regular bus from stop ② toward Nichinan or Obi serves Aoshima without a transfer: ¥610, about 24 minutes, with the last daily departure at 19:19. Regular JR trains require a Tayoshi change. The July–September shuttle does not operate under that timetable in October. Check separate dates and reserved seats for Umisachi Yamasachi.
Does a limited express train cost extra from the airport?
Within the Miyazaki–Tayoshi/Miyazaki Airport section only, a base-fare ticket covers non-reserved seats in an ordinary-class limited express car. Reserved seats, Green Cars and travel beyond this section have separate conditions and charges. The all-reserved Umisachi Yamasachi service toward Aoshima is not covered by the exception.
Are Miyako City and Minami-Miyazaki Station the same place?
No. Miyako City is a bus terminal and Minami-Miyazaki is a JR station to its east. Walk around the south side of the terminal building toward JR, following 南宮崎駅 signs and crosswalks on the official map. Allow time to carry bags and wait for the next service.
What if I arrive late or miss the last departure?
Station-bound buses finish at 19:46 on weekdays or 19:55 on weekends and public holidays. The daily 21:20 Sumiyoshi bus serves Miyako City and Tachibanadori but not Miyazaki Station. The last JR airport train is 21:55. For Aoshima, the last regular bus is 19:19; the reviewed JR connection is airport 21:55 → Tayoshi 21:57, a 45-minute wait, then 22:42 → Aoshima 23:01. Allow for arrival formalities and the final walk. If you miss the connection, ask about an airport taxi and contact your hotel or transfer provider.
