YGJ → Yonago, Matsue and the Sanin coast
Yonago Airport to Yonago, Matsue and Kaike Onsen
For a hotel near Yonago Station, compare the local JR train with an airport bus that fits your arrival. For Matsue, a direct bus avoids the train change at Yonago. Sakaiminato is in the opposite train direction. Kaike Onsen has a flight-linked afternoon bus on specific days, with a city-bus transfer via Yonago at other times.
This guide starts at Yonago Kitaro Airport · 米子鬼太郎空港 (YGJ). Official information was checked on . Times are JST and fares are adult one-way prices in yen unless noted. Ride times exclude immigration, baggage claim, waiting and the final walk.
From arrivals to the train or bus
- Finish arrivals on the first floor.
Complete immigration, baggage claim and customs before following the JR or bus signs. Domestic and international arrivals use different areas of the same terminal.
- For JR, leave the terminal and turn right.
Yonago Airport Station · 米子空港駅 is outside the terminal. Follow the official walking map across the pedestrian bridge. The airport estimates a five-minute walk; allow more time for luggage, terminal movement and bad weather. JR describes step-free access from the station entrance to the platform, but this does not establish step-free or covered access along the entire airport-to-station route. Ask airport staff about the practical route if you use a wheelchair or have heavy luggage.
- Choose the direction before boarding.
The Sakai Line · 境線 runs toward Yonago in one direction and Sakaiminato in the other. Local trains do not require seat reservations, and a seat is not guaranteed. The airport station has no staffed Midori ticket counter, Midori ticket machine or e5489 ticket collection. ICOCA uses an onboard reader here; follow the posted instructions rather than expecting a conventional station gate. Check cash and paper-ticket procedures with station signs or train staff.
Bus stops outside the first-floor lobby
- Matsue: bay 4 outside domestic arrivals. From international arrivals, continue through the first-floor lobby toward the domestic area.
- Kaike Onsen and Yonago, linked to arrivals from Seoul: bay 7 beside the international area.
- Yonago buses linked to domestic flights: use the domestic-side bus area and confirm “米子駅” and the bay on the departure sign.
- Minatoru: bay 2, with an advance reservation.
The airport floor plan shows bus bays 7–8 on the international side, bays 1–4 on the domestic side and taxi stand 5. These are not all taxi stands. Prepare cash for the Seoul-linked bus. Matsue buses accept onboard cash, supported contactless bank cards and official digital tickets; the lobby ticket machine also accepts supported transit IC and electronic payments, excluding PiTaPa. Onboard bank-card payment and transit IC payment at the machine are different services. Follow the operator’s baggage instructions and keep power banks with you rather than in the underfloor compartment.
Compare fares, ride times and transfers
Ride times begin when the vehicle departs. Add the airport-to-station walk, ticketing, service waits, transfers and your hotel walk. The two local trains to Matsue total about 60 minutes on board; the tourism association estimates roughly 90 minutes including a transfer. Neither includes immigration or guarantees a short wait.
| Transport | Destination | Adult one-way fare (JPY) | Ride time | Transfers | Reservations | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JR Sakai Line local | Yonago Station | ¥240 | About 30 min | None | No seat reservation | Carry your own bags; seats not guaranteed | Station-area hotels and lower cost |
| Domestic-flight airport bus | Yonago Station, then ANA Crowne Plaza | ¥640 | About 28 min to the station | None | Unreserved; capacity limits | Confirm large-item limits with operator | A departure matching your arrival |
| Seoul-linked airport bus | Kaike Onsen → Yonago Station | Kaike ¥500; Yonago ¥640 | 25 min to Kaike; 45 min to Yonago | None | Unreserved; operating-day limits | Ask about large or unusual items | The linked flight arriving from Seoul |
| Direct Matsue airport bus | Matsue Station bay 9 | ¥1,200 | About 45 min | None | No reservations; may fill up | Underfloor storage; confirm limits | Avoiding the train change |
| JR Sakai + Sanin local trains | Matsue, via Yonago | ¥770 through fare | About 60 min on board + transfer wait | One at Yonago | No seat reservation | Carry bags between platforms | When direct-bus times do not fit |
| JR Sakai Line local | Sakaiminato Station | ¥190 | About 15 min | None | No seat reservation | Carry your own bags | Mizuki Shigeru Road |
| Minatoru shared bus | Your reserved Sakaiminato stop | ¥100 | Varies with reserved route; airport guide gives about 30 min or more | Depends on route | Advance reservation required | Confirm capacity when reserving | A confirmed pickup during 07:00–20:00 |
| City bus via Yonago | Kaike Onsen Tourist Center | Airport-to-Yonago fare + ¥300 | About 19 min from Yonago, plus airport leg | One at Yonago | No reserved seat | Check city-bus space | When the direct Kaike bus is unavailable |
The ¥770 JR figure is the published through fare from the airport station to Matsue. Do not assume it equals two separately purchased tickets: airport–Yonago is ¥240 and Yonago–Matsue is ¥510. Limited-express Yakumo needs an additional ticket and reserved seat; check JR’s fare and reservation search for your date. Bus times may increase with congestion, snow, wind or detours.
Transfer map: airport, stations and final walks
The GSI terrain map shows airport, station and boarding areas. Dotted lines are a transfer diagram, not actual road or railway alignments. Airport bay 4 and Matsue bay 9 use operator coordinates; JR stations use existing MLIT rail data. Other pins are approximate facility locations. Follow official floor plans and on-site signs for the exact boarding point.

Use the zoom controls and location list to inspect each area. The airport-to-station walk is separate from the train ride.
To Yonago Station and nearby hotels
Yonago Station · 米子駅 is in Yonago, while the airport is in Sakaiminato. Choose your service by its actual departure time and route:
- JR: walk to the airport station → board a local train toward Yonago → get off at Yonago Station → walk to your hotel. The train ride is about 30 minutes and costs ¥240.
- Domestic-flight airport bus: arrange your ticket or payment → board in the domestic-side bus area → get off north of Yonago Station → walk to your hotel. The timetable allows about 28 minutes, at ¥640. The bus then takes about three more minutes to the ANA Crowne Plaza; it does not serve every hotel.
- Seoul-linked bus: board at airport bay 7 → travel via Kaike Onsen → get off north of Yonago Station. Allow about 45 minutes, at ¥640.
The temporary relocation notice for Yonago Station bay 7 concerns the return journey. Do not assume the airport-bound stop is the same as your arrival drop-off. Use the walking route to the station tourist information center to orient yourself, then enter your actual hotel address.
To Matsue Station: direct bus or a train transfer
- Direct bus: international arrivals → domestic-side lobby for ticket and payment instructions → airport bay 4 → Matsue Station · 松江駅, bay 9 → your hotel. The bus takes about 45 minutes and costs ¥1,200.
- JR: walk to the airport station → Sakai Line toward Yonago → change at Yonago for a Sanin Main Line · 山陰本線 local train toward Matsue or Izumoshi that stops at Matsue → walk to your hotel. Check the departure board and platform at Yonago. The published local-train fare from the airport station to Matsue is ¥770.
The direct bus timetable for March 29–October 24, 2026 is linked to ANA domestic arrivals 381, 383, 1087, 385, 387 and 389. Airport departures are 08:25, 10:35, 13:25, 16:45, 19:35 and 21:35. International passengers must compare these departures with the time they finish immigration and baggage claim. For October 25 onward, use the operator’s next-period timetable.
Seats cannot be reserved. A full bus may leave you waiting for a later service. For the linked domestic flight, airport staff authorize departure after baggage delivery is complete; an early aircraft arrival does not bring the bus departure forward. This policy does not promise that the bus will wait for international immigration, or guarantee onward connections. See Ichibata’s timetable, payment and delay policies.
The bus has underfloor baggage storage, but ask the operator about large, multiple or unusual items. After arrival at bay 9, use the station north-side walking route and your hotel’s actual entrance address.
From Matsue Station to Matsue Castle
Matsue Castle · 松江城 is not next to Matsue Station. Take the Lake Line sightseeing loop from station bay 7 to “国宝松江城(大手前)” and walk toward the castle entrance. The adult single fare is ¥250, separate from the ¥1,200 airport bus. The airport bus arrives at bay 9, not bay 7.
For an evening arrival, check the city bus schedule before relying on the Lake Line. Use the stop-to-main-gate walking route alongside the castle’s official access guide. The grounds include uneven paving and stairs, and the castle tower has no elevator. Check luggage storage or lockers and their opening hours rather than planning to take a large suitcase into the tower. A hotel near the castle still requires a separate walk or taxi ride to its actual entrance.
To Sakaiminato and Mizuki Shigeru Road
- Walk from the first-floor arrivals lobby to JR Yonago Airport Station.
- Board a Sakai Line train displaying “境港,” in the opposite direction from Yonago. The ride to Sakaiminato Station · 境港駅 takes about 15 minutes and costs ¥190.
- Leave the station for Mizuki Shigeru Road · 水木しげるロード, then continue to your chosen attraction or hotel.
The street extends about 800 meters from the station toward the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum · 水木しげる記念館. Reaching the street entrance is not the same as reaching the museum. Check the walking route and the tourism association’s street map for the final walk.
Minatoru: ¥100, with advance reservations
Reserve through the app, LINE or phone → confirm payment and airport pickup → board at airport bay 2 → get off at your reserved Sakaiminato location → walk to your destination. Minatoru operates 07:00–20:00 and closes December 31–January 3. The route, pickup time and ride duration depend on the booking; the closing time is not a promise of a 20:00 airport pickup.
Confirm registration and the supported cash, bank-card or transit IC payment method. Give the operator your passenger count and luggage details before booking. If your flight is delayed, contact the booking service to change or cancel the pickup. The vehicle does not automatically wait indefinitely.
To Kaike Onsen hotels and ryokans
Kaike Onsen · 皆生温泉 is separate from the Yonago Station hotel area. Check your ryokan address before choosing a bus simply labeled “Yonago.”
- Seoul-linked direct bus: international arrivals → prepare payment → bay 7 → Kaike Onsen stop → your accommodation. Through October 24, 2026, the published service runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, linked to the flight arriving from Seoul. It leaves the airport at 15:50, reaches Kaike at 16:15 and Yonago Station at 16:35. The Kaike ride is about 25 minutes and costs ¥500.
- Via Yonago Station: take JR or an airport bus to Yonago → change to a city bus stopping at Kaike Onsen Tourist Center · 皆生温泉観光センター → walk or take a taxi to your ryokan. The station-to-center ride is about 19 minutes, at an additional ¥300. Other destinations on the timetable, including Shinkai, Aeon and the sports center, are not interchangeable stops.
The Seoul-linked bus does not run if the matching flight is canceled. Departure may be adjusted for the flight’s actual arrival, but seats and unlimited waiting are not guaranteed. Show the driver your accommodation name and confirm the exact drop-off; the airport bus’s Kaike stop and the city bus’s tourist-center stop should not be assumed to be the same bay.
The tourist-center-to-beach route helps you understand the area. Replace the destination with your ryokan’s address. Include a hotel pickup only after the hotel confirms the reservation, time and meeting point.
Late arrivals: last departures and onward connections
The JR examples were checked for October 4, 2026 (Sunday/holiday schedule) and October 5 (weekday schedule). Airport bus times apply March 29–October 24, 2026. Check your actual travel date and same-day notices. The airport terminal’s published hours are 06:00–22:00; a later station departure does not mean you can wait inside the terminal.
- Airport Station → Yonago: weekday last train 22:52–23:22; weekend/holiday 22:08–22:37.
- Airport Station → Sakaiminato: weekday 23:15–23:29; weekend/holiday 22:30–22:45.
- Domestic-flight bus → Yonago: last scheduled departure 21:30, arrival 21:58, linked to ANA 389.
- Direct bus → Matsue: airport bay 4 at 21:35 → station bay 9 at 22:20, also linked to ANA 389. This is not the Yonago bus departing five minutes earlier.
- Seoul-linked bus → Kaike: bay 7 at 15:50 → 16:15 on its operating days, not a nightly late-arrival service.
- Yonago → Kaike Tourist Center: the checked weekday and weekend city-bus schedules end at 20:45–21:04. A late airport bus reaches Yonago after this connection.
Arriving at Yonago does not guarantee a train to Matsue
The checked last local train leaves Yonago at 22:40 and reaches Matsue at 23:09. The weekend airport train arrives at 22:37, leaving only three minutes to change platforms with luggage. This is not a dependable connection. The weekday airport train arrives at 23:22, after the last local departure.
Yakumo 29 is listed at 23:30–23:52, but its Yonago–Izumoshi section is suspended October 13–15, 19–22 and 26–29, and November 4–5, 9–12 and 16–19. Check the train’s operating-date notes, reserved-seat availability and limited-express surcharge. All seats are reserved. An eight-minute weekday connection from the airport train is not guaranteed.
If your onward transport has ended
Follow the terminal signs to official taxi stand 5. Confirm your destination, passenger count, luggage and estimated fare with the listed taxi operator. No verified flat fare is given here, and a waiting vehicle is not guaranteed.
For a reserved pickup, confirm the booking number, meeting point, flight-delay waiting limit and cancellation terms. Ask airport staff about practical alternatives, and check available rooms, late check-in and confirmed transport if you need nearby lodging. Do not plan to sleep in the terminal. Rental cars require a confirmed company, pickup time, valid driving documents, suitable winter equipment and return location; a first-floor counter does not guarantee late-night vehicle pickup.
Flight delays, snow and strong winds
Check the airport and airline flight notices, JR West’s Chugoku-region service information, Hinomaru notices, Ichibata airport buses and Matsue city buses separately. Chugoku is a region of Japan, not China. Snow alone does not prove a cancellation, and suspended JR service does not guarantee an available bus seat.
Allow extra time for wet or icy streets and luggage after arrival. Confirm your hotel’s entrance and late check-in. If you miss a local train, check the next actual departure. For advance limited-express bookings, review e5489 change and refund conditions before departure; an unused reserved seat does not automatically become a reservation on the next train. Contact Minatoru, pickup or rental providers promptly after a delay, and check bus-ticket validity and refunds with the seller.
Official tickets, payment and reservations
Once you have decided on your destination and date of use, check the ticket and payment method in the official information below. Check availability before reserving Minatoru or a rental car. The links below are not affiliate links.
Regular tickets, limited express reserved seat tickets, and wide-area passes are different products. If you have a rail pass, please check separately whether the Sakai Line is included and the conditions for limited express surcharges and reserved seats.
Yonago Airport transportation, frequently asked questions
How do I get from Yonago Airport to Yonago Station?
Walk to JR Yonago Airport Station and take a Sakai Line local train toward Yonago: about 30 minutes, ¥240. Domestic-flight airport buses cost ¥640 and take about 28 minutes. The Seoul-linked bus travels via Kaike Onsen and takes about 45 minutes to Yonago, at ¥640. Check the actual departure and boarding area.
How do I walk to JR Yonago Airport Station?
From first-floor arrivals, follow the JR signs outside, turn right and cross the pedestrian bridge shown on the airport map. The airport estimates five minutes. Allow more time for luggage and weather. JR’s step-free station entrance-to-platform description does not confirm step-free or covered access along the entire terminal-to-station route.
Is the bus or train better for a hotel near Yonago Station?
JR costs ¥240, but requires a walk to the station and a train wait. A bus matching your arrival may be easier with luggage. The Seoul-linked bus takes about 45 minutes via Kaike, so a bus is not always faster. Neither local trains nor unreserved buses guarantee a seat.
Is there a direct bus to Matsue Station?
Yes. Airport bay 4 to Matsue Station bay 9 takes about 45 minutes and costs ¥1,200. The March 29–October 24, 2026 timetable is linked to six ANA domestic arrivals. International passengers must allow for immigration and baggage claim. Seats cannot be reserved, and a full bus may not accept more passengers.
How do I change trains for Matsue?
At Yonago, change from the Sakai Line to a Sanin Main Line local train toward Matsue or Izumoshi that stops at Matsue. Check the departure board and platform. Yonago–Matsue takes about 30 minutes at ¥510; the published through fare from the airport station to Matsue is ¥770. Yakumo requires a separate limited-express ticket and reserved seat.
Which train goes to Sakaiminato?
At Yonago Airport Station, take a Sakai Line train displaying 境港, opposite the direction for Yonago. The ride takes about 15 minutes and costs ¥190. Minatoru is a separate ¥100 shared-bus option from airport bay 2, requiring an advance reservation.
Which station serves Mizuki Shigeru Road?
Sakaiminato Station. The street starts near the station and extends about 800 meters toward the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum. Allow time for the walk to your specific destination; the street entrance and museum are not the same point.
How do I reach Kaike Onsen?
Through October 24, 2026, the Seoul-linked bus operates Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 15:50 from bay 7, reaching Kaike at 16:15 for ¥500. It does not run if the matching flight is canceled. Otherwise travel via Yonago Station and a city bus to Kaike Onsen Tourist Center, about 19 minutes at an additional ¥300. Confirm the final walk or pickup with your ryokan.
Can I travel with a large suitcase?
Check the bus operator’s size and quantity limits, especially for multiple or unusual items. Matsue buses have underfloor storage. Local trains do not guarantee seats, and city buses do not necessarily have airport-style baggage space. Keep aisles and doors clear.
What if I miss the last service?
The checked airport-station last departures toward Yonago are 22:52 on weekdays and 22:08 on weekends/holidays; toward Sakaiminato they are 23:15 and 22:30. Check your date and remember the terminal closes at 22:00. Ask at official taxi stand 5 or use a confirmed pickup. Confirm vehicle availability, destination fare and hotel check-in rather than relying on overnight terminal access.
Where do I check service disruptions?
Check the airport and airline flight information, JR West’s Chugoku-region service notices, Hinomaru airport buses, Ichibata’s Matsue bus and Matsue city buses separately. One canceled service does not prove another is canceled or guarantee replacement transport. Contact reserved pickup providers about delay, change and cancellation conditions.
