Beppu hells sightseeing or a Yufuin walk?

In Beppu, visit the five Kannawa-area hells and the Chinoike/Tatsumaki pair across two days. For a hot spring village walk, choose one night in Yufuin. Omit day-two sightseeing for a morning departure flight.

See the two groups of hells over two days

For a close look at hot springs bubbling up, spend one night near Beppu Station and visit Kannawa's five hells separately from Chinoike and Tatsumaki. You need a daytime arrival on day one. Include day-two sightseeing only if you will still have enough time for airport procedures.

Day 1 · Kitahama → hotel → Kannawa's five hells

Leave your luggage at the hotel after arriving at Kitahama, then head to Kannawa. Reduce the number of hells you visit to fit the time left before the 5 p.m. closing.

  1. Kitahama and hotel → Umi Jigoku-mae

Arrive from the airport at Kitahama, leave luggage at your hotel, then go to Beppu Station west-side stop 3. Take an APU-bound route 5 bus to Umi Jigoku-mae for Kannawa's five nearby hells. Choose your return service first from the official weekday or weekend timetable.

  2. Kannawa → Visit five hells

Explore Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku and Shiraike Jigoku within the nearby area. Allow walking between facilities, visiting and waiting time, and choose those you can leave before 5 p.m. The ¥2,400 combined ticket is for sightseeing, not bathing. Visit fewer places if you arrive late.

  3. Umi Jigoku-mae → Beppu Station west side and hotel

After sightseeing, return to the Umi Jigoku-mae stop for buses toward Beppu Station's west side. Allow walks between facilities around the 5 p.m. closing and bus departure. Have a meal after reaching Beppu Station, then rest at your hotel. Standard route 5 adult fare is ¥390 each way, or ¥780 round trip.

Leave luggage at the hotel after Kitahama, then go to the Kannawa-bound stop on Beppu Station's west side. Allow walks between facilities and back to the return stop. Reduce sightseeing so you can make the bus departure after closing.

Day 2 · Chinoike and Tatsumaki → airport

Visit Chinoike and Tatsumaki, collect hotel luggage, then go to Kitahama for the airport bus. Omit both visits if they do not fit your airport procedures.

  1. Beppu Station-mae east side → Chinoike and Tatsumaki

Get a ¥1,100 Kamenoi Bus Mini one-day pass for today, then take route 26 from Beppu Station-mae east-side stop 5 to Chinoike Jigoku-mae. This differs from yesterday's west-side stop. Choose return services for your date from the official timetable and allow waiting for Tatsumaki's eruption.

  2. Chinoike Jigoku-mae → Beppu Station-mae

After visiting, take the outer-direction route 16 loop bus from Chinoike Jigoku-mae toward Beppu Station-mae. Distinguish it from route 26, which heads toward Kannawa. Allow the facility-to-stop walk when choosing your official return service.

  3. Beppu hotel → Kitahama airport-bound boarding stop

Collect luggage and go to Kitahama's airport-bound boarding stop. Choose a walk or transport appropriate to your hotel address and allow separate time and costs. Distinguish the airport-bound boarding point from where you arrived from the airport.

Check the actual route and required travel time from your hotel to Kitahama's airport-bound boarding stop.

  4. Kitahama airport-bound boarding stop → Oita Airport

Choose an airport-bound bus in the official timetable for your date that leaves ample time before your airline's check-in deadline. Adult fare is ¥1,600 one way. Allow road delays and airport procedures beyond the scheduled bus arrival. Reduce or omit final-day sightseeing if it would prevent you from catching this bus.

Depart on route 26 from east-side stop 5 and check route 16's loop direction for the return. Today's ¥1,100 Mini one-day pass is included in the cost. Allow separate time for walking to facility entrances and waiting for an eruption. Omit sightseeing today if collecting hotel luggage, reaching the Kitahama airport bus and leaving time for procedures do not fit.

Subtotal of the listed inclusions: ¥7,480

Included items: Hells combined ticket ¥2,400; day-one route 5 round trip ¥780; Kitahama airport bus round trip ¥3,200; day-two Kamenoi Bus Mini one-day pass ¥1,100 (route 26 outbound, route 16 return)

Costs outside the subtotal: Lodging, meals, flights, bathing, private facilities, luggage storage, and additional travel between your hotel and Kitahama, stations or bus centers.

This subtotal combines the hells ticket and the transportation/admission listed in the itinerary. Day two's ¥1,100 Mini one-day pass is included in ¥7,480. Do not reuse the same one-day pass on a different date; it does not replace hells admission. Lodging, meals, flights and bathing cost extra.

Walk Yunotsubo Street and Lake Kinrin on separate days

For relaxed walks along a shopping street and lakeshore, stay one night near Yufuin Station. Walk Yunotsubo Street on day one and Lake Kinrin on day two. Set walking time around hotel meals, shuttles and the departure-day airport bus.

Day 1 · Airport → Yufuin hotel → Yunotsubo Street

Leave luggage at your Yufuin hotel, then walk Yunotsubo Street. If arriving late, prioritize your hotel's dinner and check-in times.

  1. Oita Airport → Yufuin Station-mae

Take a bus from Oita Airport to the Yufuin Station-mae bus center. Adult fare is ¥2,000 one way. Choose a service from the official timetable below that you can board after immigration and baggage collection. Shorten the street walk if arriving late.

  2. Yufuin hotel → Yunotsubo Street

Leave luggage at your hotel near Yufuin Station. If daylight remains, have lunch and browse shops on Yunotsubo Street. Shop hours vary; with a late arrival, limit the plan to a street walk and your hotel meal. Check the ryokan's check-in, dinner and shuttle times before returning.

Check the actual Yufuin-bound service and boarding stop at the airport, then get off at the bus center. Leave luggage at the hotel before walking. If arriving late, shorten the walk and keep your hotel's dinner and check-in times.

Day 2 · Lake Kinrin → bus center → airport

Walk around Lake Kinrin, then leave for the airport from the Yufuin Station-mae bus center.

  1. Yufuin Station and hotel → Lake Kinrin

If your hotel can hold luggage after checkout, walk from the station toward Yunotsubo Street and Lake Kinrin. Yufu City's 2023 map estimates about 25 minutes from station to lake. Returning along the same route makes about 50 minutes of walking alone; shopping, photos, breaks and trips to/from your hotel are extra. Shorten the lakeside walk around your airport return time. Morning mist is not guaranteed.

  2. Yufuin hotel → Yufuin Station-mae bus center

Collect luggage and go to the Yufuin Station-mae bus center. Choose walking or transport based on your hotel address and allow separate time and costs.

Check the actual route and required travel time from your hotel to the Yufuin Station-mae bus center.

  3. Yufuin Station-mae bus center → Oita Airport

Choose an airport-bound service from the official timetable for your date that leaves ample time before your airline's check-in deadline. Adult fare is ¥2,000 one way. Allow road delays and airport procedures beyond scheduled bus arrival. Reduce or omit final-day sightseeing if it would prevent you from catching the bus. The Yufuin airport bus does not guarantee a flight connection.

Return from Lake Kinrin to the hotel, collect luggage and go to the Yufuin Station-mae bus center. The bus is not coordinated to connect with your flight, so shorten the walk or take an earlier service if airport procedure time is tight. If you need an earlier airport arrival, change where you stay the preceding night.

Subtotal of the listed inclusions: ¥4,000

Included items: Two regular airport–Yufuin one-way tickets at ¥2,000 each

Costs outside the subtotal: Lodging, meals, flights, bathing, private facilities, luggage storage, and additional travel between your hotel and Kitahama, stations or bus centers.

Only checked regular route-ticket costs are added here. Do not use this as a total trip budget including lodging and meals. Cafes, private facilities and hotel shuttles are excluded from this round-trip airport bus cost.

Do I need both a hells ticket and a city bus pass?

The combined hells ticket and bus pass are separate tickets. This itinerary budgets ¥780 in regular fares for the first day's route 5 round trip, then a ¥1,100 Mini one-day pass for the second day's outbound route 26 and return route 16. One one-day pass is not used across both days.

The Mini pass covers Beppu city hells sightseeing and the Kijima Kogen area. On a day traveling to Yufuin, check Wide pass coverage and compare it with ordinary fares. This bus pass does not cover Oita Kotsu airport buses, JR, the ropeway or hells admission. No Beppu bus pass is added to the one-night itinerary B, which focuses on walking in Yufuin.

Where do I board for the airport in Beppu or Yufuin?

Keep sightseeing brief on the last day before returning to the airport. In Beppu, use the airport-bound boarding stop at Kitahama; in Yufuin, use the bus center in front of the station. Check Kitahama's airport-bound boarding location separately from where you got off on arrival.

Choose a bus from the official timetable for your travel date that leaves enough time before your airline's check-in deadline. Allow time to collect luggage at your accommodation and reach the stop. Confirm luggage storage with your accommodation. If no bus works after sightseeing or gets you there in time for check-in, shorten or omit the last day's sightseeing.

The checked Yufuin ↔ airport timetable covers October 1–24, 2026. For travel from October 25 onward, check the new timetable for your date. The airport bus does not guarantee a connection in time for flight check-in.
