Give Nikko’s Toshogu and Rinnoji separate days

Stay one night in Nikko to take your time with Toshogu’s carvings and Rinnoji’s wooden halls and mausoleum architecture. This Asakusa round trip visits Toshogu on day one and Sanbutsudo Hall and Taiyuin on day two. Leaving the waterfall and lake out of these two days gives you time to rest between visits.

Day 1

See Toshogu’s carvings and architecture today, then stay near Nikko Station.

  1. Asakusa Station → Tobu-Nikko Station

    Board the reserved-seat Limited Express Revaty Kegon from Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko. Get off at Tobu-Nikko Station.

  2. Tobu-Nikko Station → Toshogu entrance via Nishisando Iriguchi stop

    Buy that day’s World Heritage bus ticket at the station tourist center, open 8:20 a.m.–4:20 p.m. From Tobu-Nikko, take a YK service to Yumoto Onsen via Kotoku Onsen and get off at Nishisando Iriguchi · 西参道入口 (9). The boarding stop was 2A at the checked date; recheck the operator’s information and on-site signs for your date. Follow Nishisando and Omotesando directions to Toshogu’s entrance, an officially listed walk of about 10 minutes, plus admission time.

  3. Toshogu entrance → See Toshogu’s carvings and architecture

    Use the ¥1,600 Toshogu-only ticket to see Yomeimon and the Three Wise Monkeys and Sleeping Cat carvings. April–October hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with admission until 4:30 p.m. Winter hours are shorter, so check your actual date’s operations. The museum combined ticket is excluded from the cost.

  4. Toshogu → Lunch in Sannai and walk to the bus stop

    Have lunch and rest around Sannai. From the visitor entrance, retrace Omotesando and Nishisando to the station-bound side of stop 9.

  5. Nishisando Iriguchi → Tobu-Nikko Station

    At the station-bound side of Nishisando Iriguchi (9), take a C or YK service toward JR Nikko Station and get off at Tobu-Nikko. Do not continue to the JR Nikko terminus.

Toshogu’s admission cutoff changes with the season. If arriving late, adjust the itinerary to visit the next day.

Day 2

Visit Sanbutsudo Hall and Taiyuin, then return to Asakusa. You also need to walk between their entrances.

  1. Tobu-Nikko Station → Sanbutsudo entrance via Nishisando Iriguchi stop

    Buy a new one-day ticket for day two at the station tourist center; yesterday’s ticket is not valid. From Tobu-Nikko, take a C service to Chuzenji Onsen and get off at Nishisando Iriguchi (9). The boarding stop was 2C at the checked date; recheck the operator’s information and on-site signs for your date. Follow the route from Nishisando and Omotesando to Sanbutsudo, allowing time for the walk to its entrance and admission queues.

  2. Sanbutsudo entrance → Buy a combined ticket and visit Sanbutsudo

    In the morning, buy the ¥900 Sanbutsudo–Taiyuin combined ticket and visit Sanbutsudo. April–October combined-ticket sales end at 2:30 p.m., earlier than regular admission. On days with Sanbutsudo access restrictions, adjust your itinerary to the available visiting hours. Find date-specific restrictions in attraction information and temple event notices.

  3. Sanbutsudo → Walk from Sanbutsudo to Taiyuin and visit

    Follow the official temple map’s route: Sanbutsudo → Omotesando → Nishisando → Taiyuin, then visit Taiyuin. The treasure house and Shoyoen Garden are excluded from this combined ticket.

  4. Taiyuin → Lunch and walk to the station-bound bus stop

    After lunch, descend Nishisando to the station-bound side of stop 9. Allow time for your meal, the walk to the stop, and bus waiting.

  5. Nishisando Iriguchi → Tobu-Nikko Station

    At the station-bound side of Nishisando Iriguchi (9), take a C or YK service toward JR Nikko Station and get off at Tobu-Nikko. Do not continue to the JR Nikko terminus.

  6. Tobu-Nikko Station → Asakusa Station

    Board your reserved-seat Limited Express Revaty Kegon from Tobu-Nikko to Asakusa. Check the departure board for that day’s platform.

Rinnoji combined-ticket sales end at 2:30 p.m. April–October and 1:30 p.m. November–March. After visiting, connect the station-bound bus with your limited express to Asakusa.

Explore Oya History Museum and try Utsunomiya gyoza

Stay one night in Utsunomiya to explore the underground space where Oya stone was quarried, then try gyoza the next day. This Tokyo Station round trip visits Oya History Museum on day one, then Gyoza Street and Kirasse Main Store on day two. It excludes travel to and from Nikko.

Day 1

Arrive in Utsunomiya and visit the underground Oya stone quarry, returning to the same city afterward.

    Take a regular Utsunomiya Line train from Tokyo Station toward Utsunomiya and get off at Utsunomiya Station. This uses an ordinary car, not a Green Car.

  2. JR Utsunomiya Station → Shiryokan Iriguchi bus stop and Oya History Museum

    Buy the ¥2,200 Oya sightseeing one-day ticket at the tourist information office beside the station’s regular-train ticket gates. Sales hours are 9 a.m.–2:50 p.m.; closures such as the year-end and New Year period are separate. From west-side stop 6 at Utsunomiya Station, take route 45 for Tateiwa via Oya (大谷経由立岩) and get off at Shiryokan Iriguchi · 資料館入口. Distinguish it from route 47 to Shin-Kanuma. The official ride estimate is about 30 minutes; allow for traffic, followed by a roughly five-minute walk to the museum.

  3. Shiryokan Iriguchi bus stop → Visit the underground quarry

    Visit Oya History Museum. April–November hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with admission until 4:30 p.m. Check your actual date’s operations, including winter Tuesday closures. Admission is included in the Oya sightseeing one-day ticket. Wheelchairs and strollers cannot be used for regular entry down the stairs. Paid golf-cart assistance requires advance booking on eligible weekdays; same-day requests are not accepted.

    First check the opening hours and menu of your chosen dining spot for that day. Have lunch and rest above ground, then return to the Utsunomiya Station-bound side of Shiryokan Iriguchi stop.

  5. Shiryokan Iriguchi bus stop → West side of JR Utsunomiya Station

    Take route 01 for Utsunomiya Station from the station-bound side of Shiryokan Iriguchi stop.

At the checked date, Oya ticket sales ran 9 a.m.–2:50 p.m. Check museum winter closures and stair-access restrictions, plus route 45 toward the museum and route 01 toward the station.

Day 2

Walk Gyoza Street and eat at Kirasse Main Store before returning to Tokyo Station.

  1. West side of JR Utsunomiya Station → Walk Gyoza Street

    From JR Utsunomiya Station’s west side, follow the main road and cross Miyanohashi to Gyoza Street. The prefectural tourism organization lists about a 15-minute station walk. Explore the signs and lanes, checking individual shops’ hours. Today uses walking, so you do not use yesterday’s Oya ticket.

  2. Gyoza Street → Eat gyoza at Kirasse Main Store

    Continue to Kirasse Main Store · 来らっせ本店 in central Babadori. Address: 馬場通り2-3-12, basement level of MEGA Don Quijote La Park Utsunomiya. From 11 a.m., compare gyoza in the rotating daily vendor area (日替わり店舗). Distinguish this from frozen gyoza sales at the Paseo branch. Finish eating with enough time to return to the station.

    After your meal, return to street level and walk back to JR Utsunomiya Station’s west exit.

  4. JR Utsunomiya Station → Tokyo Station

    Choose a regular train from Utsunomiya that travels via Tokyo Station and get off there. Confirm that it stops at Tokyo Station, distinguishing it from services via Shinjuku.

Kirasse’s rotating daily vendor area and five permanent shops have different operating conditions. If the meal queue is long, shorten the street walk to catch your return train.
