Four nights in Tochigi: connect both cities or spend two by the lake?
For Oya’s quarry and gyoza, divide the trip into two nights in Utsunomiya, one in Nikko, and one by Lake Chuzenji. To reduce hotel changes and see more lake exhibits, compare two nights each in Nikko and by the lake. The latter visits villas and the nature museum on separate days and takes the mountain bus down on the last day. Villa itineraries need adjustment during the December–March winter closure.
Choose an itinerary for 5 days, 4 nights
Two nights in Utsunomiya, then one each in Nikko and by the lake
Split your stay into two nights in Utsunomiya, one near Nikko Station, and one at Chuzenji Onsen for the underground quarry, gyoza, temples, and lakeside villas. Depart Tokyo Station and return to Asakusa. Day three’s three-site shrine and temple visit involves considerable walking. The villas close December–March, so this itinerary cannot be used unchanged in winter.

For two days by the lake, spend two nights near Nikko Station and two in Chuzenji Onsen. Travel round-trip from Asakusa, visit Toshogu and Rinnoji on separate days, and leave other days for the waterfall, two villas, and nature museum. The villas close December–March, so this itinerary does not work unchanged in winter.

Frequently asked questions
Can one Chuzenji two-day ticket cover a two-night lake stay?
Option B spans three days from the outbound ride to the return, beyond one two-day ticket’s validity. It budgets two regular one-way rides at ¥1,250 each. A goes up on Day 4 and down on Day 5, so a Chuzenji Onsen two-day ticket started on Day 4 covers both.
