How should you split Tochigi’s temples, gyoza, and lake?
Stay near Nikko Station for more time with temple architecture, or west of Utsunomiya Station for the underground quarry and gyoza meals. Consider a Lake Chuzenji stay to visit the waterfall and villas on separate days. Mountain buses and hotel changes take time; avoid squeezing both cities and the lake into one day.
Temples, an underground quarry, or a lakeside walk?
Toshogu and Rinnoji in Nikko, Oya History Museum in Utsunomiya, and Kegon Falls and the two embassy villas by Lake Chuzenji involve different visits and travel legs. Compare admission, entrances, and seasonal operation in the attraction guide.
Day-by-day itineraries
Start with what you want to do: see Toshogu and Rinnoji’s architecture, explore Oya’s underground quarry and eat gyoza in Utsunomiya, or stay overnight by Lake Chuzenji. Compare trip lengths from city day trips to lake stays. Some options leave from Tokyo Station and return to Asakusa.
2 days, 1 night
Spend one night in Nikko to give Toshogu and Rinnoji a day each, or one in Utsunomiya for the underground quarry and gyoza. The Nikko option travels round-trip from Asakusa; the Utsunomiya option uses Tokyo Station.
3 days, 2 nights
Option A stays two nights in Nikko with a waterfall and lake trip on the middle day. B stays in Utsunomiya and visits Oya History Museum and Nikko’s shrine on separate days. Neither changes hotels.
4 days, 3 nights
A adds one night by the lake after two in Nikko and visits the British villa on the last day. B spends one night in Utsunomiya and two in Nikko, connecting Oya and gyoza with a lake day trip. B leaves from Tokyo Station and returns to Asakusa.
5 days, 4 nights
A spends two nights in Utsunomiya, one in Nikko, and one by the lake, visiting the underground quarry and both villas. B spends two in Nikko and two by the lake, visiting villas and the nature museum on separate days. A’s day with three shrine and temple sites involves extensive walking.

Connect your post-visit bus with your return train
Asakusa round trips use Tobu limited express trains; departures from Tokyo or Utsunomiya use regular JR trains and the Nikko Line. JR Nikko and Tobu-Nikko are different stations. Three-night option B and four-night option A depart Tokyo Station and return to Asakusa.
On the descent from the lake, take a station-bound bus from Chuzenji Onsen Terminal. At the checked date, stop 26B differed from Yumoto-bound 26A. Consider your sightseeing finish time and mountain-road congestion, and leave a buffer after arriving at Tobu-Nikko before your return limited express. Bus-ticket use days differ by itinerary
One-night option A uses a separate World Heritage one-day ticket on each of days one and two. One-night option B uses the Oya sightseeing one-day ticket only on day one. Two-night option A uses a World Heritage ticket on day one and a Chuzenji Onsen two-day ticket on days two and three, without adding another Sannai bus ticket. Two-night option B uses the Oya ticket on day one and World Heritage ticket on day two.
Three-night option A uses separate World Heritage tickets on the first two days, then a Chuzenji two-day ticket on days three and four. Three-night option B uses the Oya ticket on day one and Chuzenji ticket on days three and four. Four-night option A uses Oya on day two, World Heritage on day three, and Chuzenji on days four and five. Four-night option B uses separate World Heritage tickets on the first two days and regular one-way lake bus fares on days three and five: returning after two nights falls outside one two-day ticket’s validity.
The adult World Heritage ticket costs ¥600 for the day; the Chuzenji Onsen ticket costs ¥2,300 for two days. The ¥2,200 Oya ticket includes museum admission, so do not add ¥1,000 again. Check sales conditions and coverage for your new travel date.

Distinguish rail passes from this itinerary’s bus tickets
NIKKO PASS is for foreign travelers; accompanying Japanese nationals can also purchase it. The World Heritage version lasts two days and ALL AREA lasts four. Both exclude limited express charges and shrine/temple admission. The World Heritage version alone does not cover buses to Lake Chuzenji. One four-day pass cannot cover both the Asakusa departure and final-day return of a four-night, five-day trip.
Distinguish JR sections departing Utsunomiya and Kanto Transportation buses to Oya from the Tobu pass’s Asakusa round-trip sections. Current budgets are examples using regular rail tickets and itinerary-specific bus tickets, not pass savings or purchase quotes.
JR TOKYO Wide Pass lasts three consecutive days from your selected start date. The adult price is ¥16,000, and you need your original passport issued by a country other than Japan. A Temporary Visitor status requirement does not apply. You can compare coverage days and JR Tokyo–Utsunomiya–Nikko sections, but it excludes this itinerary’s standalone Tobu-Nikko–Asakusa limited express and Oya/lake buses. Yuba · 湯波
Nikko yuba is made by lifting the skin that forms when soy milk is heated. The Nikko tourism association introduces it as a local food and lists yuba restaurants. Choose somewhere before or after your temple visits, and check menus and opening days with the restaurant.
Avoid counting bus tickets and admission twice
Reference prices are per adult. Check train ticket types, seasonal fares, and facility operation for your dates.
The day you visit Oya History Museum
The ¥2,200 Oya sightseeing one-day ticket includes museum admission, so do not add the regular ¥1,000 adult admission again. If paying the museum separately, check its cash-only policy and underground access restrictions.

Temple and lake buses use different tickets
The ¥600 World Heritage bus ticket is valid for one day and does not reach Chuzenji Onsen. The Chuzenji Onsen ticket costs ¥2,300 and lasts two days. Staying two nights by the lake puts outbound and return rides across three days, beyond one ticket’s validity.
Choose admission tickets for the sites you will visit
Toshogu’s ¥1,600 ticket and Rinnoji’s ¥900 Sanbutsudo–Taiyuin ticket are separate. Budget another ¥600 for the Kegon Falls elevator and ¥450 for the combined British and Italian villa ticket. With the combined villa ticket, do not add two ¥300 single tickets.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to stay overnight at Lake Chuzenji?
You can stay near Nikko Station and take a day trip to the waterfall and lake. For the British villa the next day, compare two nights in Nikko followed by one by the lake. Two nights in Nikko and two by the lake let you visit both villas and the nature museum on separate days. Lake stays involve mountain buses and changing hotels, so check operating dates and return transport first.
