Tochigi: how should you divide temples, gyoza and the lake?

Stay near Nikko Station for temple architecture, or west of Utsunomiya Station for the underground quarry and gyoza. Consider staying at Lake Chuzenji if you want to visit the waterfall and villas on separate days. Mountain-road buses and hotel moves take time, so avoid fitting both cities and the lake into one day.

Start with temples, the underground quarry or the lakeshore?

Nikko’s Toshogu and Rinnoji, Utsunomiya’s Oya History Museum, and Lake Chuzenji’s Kegon Falls and embassy villas involve different visits and travel. Compare fees, entrances and seasonal operation in the attraction guidance first.

Day-by-day itineraries

Choose temple architecture at Toshogu and Rinnoji, Oya’s underground quarry and Utsunomiya gyoza, or an overnight Lake Chuzenji stay. Compare trip lengths from city day trips to lake stays. Some options start at Tokyo Station and finish at Asakusa, using different departure and return stations.

1 night, 2 days

Stay one night in Nikko to give Toshogu and Rinnoji a day each, or one in Utsunomiya for the quarry and gyoza. Nikko routes return to Asakusa; Utsunomiya routes return to Tokyo Station.

2 nights, 3 days

In itinerary A, stay two nights in Nikko and visit the waterfall and lake between temple visits. In B, stay in Utsunomiya and visit Oya History Museum and Nikko’s shrine on separate days. Keep the same hotel throughout either itinerary.

3 nights, 4 days

In itinerary A, spend one night beside the lake after two in Nikko, and visit the British villa on the final day. In B, spend one night in Utsunomiya and two in Nikko for Oya, gyoza and a lake day trip. Start B at Tokyo Station and return to Asakusa.

4 nights, 5 days

In itinerary A, spend two nights in Utsunomiya, one in Nikko and one by the lake to visit the quarry and both villas. In B, spend two nights each in Nikko and by the lake to visit the villas and museum on separate days. Visiting A’s three shrine and temple sites in one day involves substantial walking.

Plan the bus after your visit around your return train

Asakusa return trips use Tobu limited expresses; routes from Tokyo or Utsunomiya use JR ordinary trains and the Nikko Line. JR Nikko and Tobu-nikko are separate stations. Four days B and five days A start at Tokyo Station and finish at Asakusa.

On lake-descent days, use Chuzenji Onsen terminal’s station-bound bus. Stand 26B was used when checked, distinct from Yumoto-bound 26A. Allow visit completion time and mountain-road traffic, then time at Tobu-nikko before your return limited express. Bus-pass days differ by itinerary

Two days A uses a World Heritage one-day pass on each day. Two days B uses the Oya pass on day one only. Three days A uses World Heritage on day one and Chuzenji Onsen on days two and three, without adding another Sannai bus pass. Three days B uses Oya on day one and World Heritage on day two.

Four days A uses World Heritage on each of the first two days and Chuzenji Onsen on days three and four. Four days B uses Oya on day one and Chuzenji Onsen on days three and four. Five days A uses Oya on day two, World Heritage on day three and Chuzenji Onsen on days four and five. Five days B uses World Heritage on each of the first two days and ordinary one-way lake bus fares on days three and five. After two nights by the lake, the return is outside one two-day pass’s validity.

World Heritage costs JPY 600 for adults and is valid that day; Chuzenji Onsen costs JPY 2,300 for two days. The JPY 2,200 Oya pass includes museum admission, so JPY 1,000 is not added again. Check sales conditions and coverage for your new travel dates.

NIKKO PASS is for foreign travellers; accompanying Japanese nationals can also buy it. World Heritage is valid two days and ALL AREA four days. Both exclude limited-express supplements and shrine and temple admission. World Heritage alone does not cover Lake Chuzenji buses. One four-day pass cannot cover both a five-day trip’s Asakusa departure and final-day return.

JR journeys from Utsunomiya and Kanto buses to Oya differ from the Tobu pass’s Asakusa return coverage. These budgets use ordinary tickets and itinerary-specific bus passes; they are not pass-saving calculations or purchase quotes.

The JR Tokyo Wide Pass lasts three consecutive days from the chosen start date. Adult price is JPY 16,000, with an original passport issued outside Japan required; Temporary Visitor status is not required. Compare covered JR sections between Tokyo, Utsunomiya and Nikko and dates, but standalone Tobu-nikko–Asakusa limited expresses and buses to Oya and the lake are excluded. Avoid adding bus passes and admission twice

Reference costs are for one adult. Check train tickets, season and facility operation for your date.

On the Oya History Museum day

The JPY 2,200 Oya sightseeing one-day pass includes museum admission, so do not add the JPY 1,000 ordinary adult fee again. For separately purchased museum entry, check cash-only payment and underground access restrictions.

Temple and lake buses need different passes

The World Heritage pass costs JPY 600 for that day and excludes Chuzenji Onsen. The Chuzenji Onsen pass costs JPY 2,300 for two days. If you stay two nights by the lake, your outward and return journeys span three days, so one two-day pass cannot cover both.
