JR TOKYO Wide Pass: three days, coverage and seat reservations

JR TOKYO Wide Pass

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass gives you three consecutive days of Ordinary Car travel on specified routes around Tokyo (東京). Covered JR East Shinkansen and limited express services and selected other railways are included. The Tokaido Shinkansen and JR buses are excluded.

Trip.com’s three-day option is an electronic exchange voucher, not a boarding QR ticket. Take the voucher and your original non-Japanese passport to a designated JR collection counter. The seller lists a 90-day voucher period; the collected pass covers three consecutive travel days. Its cancellation policy charges 10% before 23:59 on the voucher’s expiry date and 100% afterwards, with no cancellation after activation or a reservation and no partial refund. Check the expiry date and final conditions in your booking before paying. Seller conditions checked on 6 October 2026.

The linked purchase page is in English and displays prices in US dollars (USD). Its display currency does not confirm the currency charged at checkout; check the final payment screen before paying.

Which itinerary suits this pass?

Compare the pass price with the total cost of individual tickets if you can arrange your day trips on three consecutive days. You cannot split the validity across separate travel dates.

Who can use it?

You must be a non-Japanese national with a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan. The official eligibility rules do not require Temporary Visitor status. The traveller must show their original passport when buying or collecting the pass, and it must remain valid throughout the travel period.

Prices and child fares

Official prices are JPY 16,000 for an adult and JPY 8,000 for a child aged 6–11 on the purchase date. Children under six do not need a pass if they do not require a reserved seat.

Check how to collect your purchase

Collection instructions differ between a booking made directly through JR and an electronic exchange voucher from a travel agency. For official online purchases, JR lists supported ticket machines with passport readers and Travel Service Centers as collection options. Follow the instructions for your purchase channel.

Included routes and exclusions

The official area includes the Izu Kyuko Line towards Izukyu-Shimoda and Fujikyu Railway towards Kawaguchiko, as well as Tokyo Monorail, the Rinkai Line and Joshin Dentetsu. The New Shuttle is covered only between Omiya (大宮) and the Railway Museum (鉄道博物館). For a through limited express between JR and Tobu Railway, either your departure or arrival station must be a JR station. The Tokaido Shinkansen and JR buses are excluded. Some Fujikyu sightseeing trains and reserved seats require an extra payment. GALA Yuzawa Station operates only in winter and spring. Use the official English map to check boundary stations.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Choose your routes and start date. The pass is valid for three consecutive days from that date. You cannot buy multiple passes of the same type with overlapping validity periods.

  2. Bring your own original passport. A copy cannot be used to issue the pass, and you cannot lend or transfer it, including to a family member.

  3. Collect the actual pass at a location supported by your purchase channel. For a direct JR online purchase collected from a supported machine, bring your original passport with an IC chip. Do not assume that a travel agency voucher can use the same collection process.

  4. Before boarding with a reserved seat, obtain a seat ticket from a JR East reserved-seat machine, ticket counter or Travel Service Center. Holding the pass does not secure a seat. The official guide allows reservations from one month before travel.

  5. Use the actual pass at supported automatic gates and retrieve it on the other side. Use a staffed passage where automatic gates are unavailable and on the Omiya–Railway Museum section of the New Shuttle.

  6. Carry your original passport while travelling. Check the train, coach and seat on your reservation. Pay the separate fares and charges required outside the coverage area or on services with extra fees.

Questions about this pass

Can a foreign resident of Japan use this pass?

Official eligibility requires non-Japanese nationality and a passport; it is not restricted to Temporary Visitors. The traveller must show their original passport. If your travel agency lists separate conditions for its option, check those as well.

Does it cover the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka?

The Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded. You need separate tickets for journeys outside the TOKYO Wide coverage area.

Can I take a Tobu limited express from Asakusa to Nikko?

A limited express journey starting and ending at Tobu stations is not covered. On a covered JR–Tobu through limited express, at least one endpoint must be a JR station. Regular Tobu trains between Shimo-imaichi (下今市) and Tobu-nikko (東武日光) or Kinugawa-onsen (鬼怒川温泉) are included.

Can I use the three days separately?

No. The pass is valid for three consecutive days from your selected start date.

Can I board a reserved-seat train with just the pass?

Obtain a seat ticket before using a reserved seat. You cannot board Tsubasa, Nikko, Kinugawa or SPACIA Kinugawa without one. Some other limited express services have rules for using vacant seats; do not assume that every train with reservable seats follows the same rule.

What if I lose the pass or need to change its dates?

Lost or stolen passes are not reissued. You cannot change the type or validity period of an issued pass.

Can I refund an unused pass?

Under JR’s conditions, an unused pass within its validity period can normally be refunded at the seller with a 10% fee. Once the departure time of a train for which a seat ticket has been issued has passed, no refund is available even if unused. For an unexchanged travel-agency purchase, check the seller’s cancellation conditions.
