JR TOKYO Wide Pass: three-day coverage, collection and reserved seats
JR TOKYO Wide Pass
Three consecutive days on covered routes around Tokyo, including specified JR East Shinkansen and limited express services and selected other railways. It does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen or JR buses.
Places in this guide: Tokyo (東京) · Kawaguchiko (河口湖) · Izukyu-Shimoda (伊豆急下田) · GALA Yuzawa (ガーラ湯沢) · Omiya (大宮) · The Railway Museum (鉄道博物館) · Tobu-nikko (東武日光) · Kinugawa-onsen (鬼怒川温泉)

Services that need an additional payment
Hayabusa and Komachi are not included as limited express services: their limited express charges are additional. GranClass is also excluded. Green Car, GranClass and sleeper travel require the applicable accommodation and express charges, rather than just an upgrade price difference. This is separate from reserving an included Ordinary Car seat.

Compare three consecutive days of trips
If you can group your Tokyo-area day trips into three consecutive days, compare their separate ticket costs with this pass. You cannot spread its three days across a longer holiday or buy overlapping passes of the same type.

It covers Ordinary Car travel on the designated JR East network and certain other railways. It is not a nationwide pass, and a Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Osaka journey on the Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded.

Passport eligibility and child fares
The traveller must be a non-Japanese national with a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan. The operator’s conditions do not restrict this pass to Temporary Visitor status. Present your own original passport when buying or collecting it and carry it throughout use. A copy is not accepted; the passport must remain valid during the pass period.

The official price is JPY 16,000 for adults and JPY 8,000 for children aged 6–11 on the purchase date. Children under six do not need a pass if they do not need a reserved seat. These are Japanese operator prices, not AUD conversions.

Covered routes and the connections that matter
The official map includes JR East lines in the designated area, Izu Kyuko towards Izukyu-Shimoda, Fujikyu Railway towards Kawaguchiko, Tokyo Monorail, the Rinkai Line and Joshin Dentetsu. The New Shuttle is covered only between Omiya and The Railway Museum. Check boundary stations on the linked English map.

For the covered JR–Tobu through limited express services, one end of the journey must be a JR station. A limited express journey that both starts and ends at Tobu stations is not included. Local and rapid Tobu services are included between Shimo-imaichi and Tobu-nikko or Kinugawa-onsen.

The Tokaido Shinkansen and JR buses are excluded. Some Fujikyu sightseeing trains and reserved seats require a separate payment. GALA Yuzawa Station operates only in winter and spring; check the season before planning that journey.

Direct JR purchase and a seller’s exchange order are different
Identify what you will receive before buying. A direct JR-EAST Train Reservation booking and a travel seller’s electronic exchange order may have different collection procedures and cancellation terms. Do not assume a seller’s voucher can be collected at every machine that supports direct JR bookings.

The direct JR purchase guide lists supported passport-reader ticket machines and travel service centres. Bring your original passport; a supported machine requires an IC-chip passport. Confirm the collection location and its opening hours for your actual booking, allowing separately for immigration, luggage collection and the walk from the terminal.

Reserve seats before boarding
Obtain a seat ticket before using a reserved seat, through JR East reserved-seat ticket machines, ticket counters or travel service centres. The pass itself does not guarantee an available seat. The official purchase guidance allows reservations from one month before departure.

Tsubasa, Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa require a seat ticket before boarding. Some other limited express services have separate vacant-seat provisions; do not treat that exception as a rule for every all-reserved train.

Use the actual pass at supported automatic gates and collect it from the other side. Use a staffed passage where automatic gates do not support it, including the covered New Shuttle section. Check the train, carriage and seat on your reservation.

Changes, loss and refunds
An issued pass cannot be changed to another pass type or given a different validity period. It cannot be replaced if lost or stolen, and it cannot be lent or transferred to another person, including family members.
Source: JR East official conditions and FAQ — JR TOKYO Wide PassSource: JR East official transport conditions (Japanese) — JR TOKYO Wide Pass
The operator’s transport conditions allow an unused pass within its validity period to be refunded at its sales location, less a 10% fee. Once the departure time of a train with an issued seat reservation has passed, a refund is not available even if the pass has not been used.

A seller’s unexchanged voucher has that seller’s cancellation conditions, not necessarily the same process as an issued JR pass. Read the verified package conditions before buying; operator rules alone do not establish a Trip.com option’s refund terms.

Using your ticket
Choose a start date that groups your eligible journeys into three consecutive days. Compare their separate fares and check the exact coverage boundaries.
Bring your own original passport. Confirm the collection method for a direct JR booking or the specific seller’s exchange order; do not substitute one channel’s instructions for another.
Collect the physical pass at a supported location. For a direct booking collected at a passport-reader machine, bring an IC-chip passport.
Before boarding a reserved-seat service, obtain the seat ticket and check the train, carriage and seat number. Allow time for collection and reservations rather than treating your flight’s landing time as station arrival.
Insert the pass at a supported automatic gate and collect it on exit. Use the staffed passage where required, including the covered New Shuttle section.
Carry the original passport during use and pay any additional fare or supplement required outside the coverage or for excluded services.
Questions and answers
Can a foreign resident in Japan use the pass?
The official rules require non-Japanese nationality and a valid non-Japanese passport, not Temporary Visitor status alone. Present your own original passport. A seller’s package may have additional verified conditions.
Does it cover the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka?
No. The Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded. Buy separate tickets for journeys outside the covered network.
Can I take a Tobu limited express from Asakusa to Nikko?
A limited express journey with both endpoints at Tobu stations is not covered. Covered JR–Tobu through limited express journeys must have a JR station at one end. The designated Tobu local-train sections have different rules.
Can I split the three days across my holiday?
No. The pass runs for three consecutive days from the selected start date.
Is the pass alone enough for a reserved-seat train?
Obtain a seat ticket before boarding. Tsubasa, Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa cannot be boarded without it. Separate vacant-seat provisions on certain other trains are not a general rule for all-reserved services.
Does Tokyo Wide include Hayabusa and Komachi?
Their limited express charges are not included. GranClass is also excluded. An Ordinary Car seat reservation does not remove these additional charges.
Can I change the dates or replace a lost pass?
An issued pass cannot have its validity period or pass type changed. Lost or stolen passes are not replaced.
Can I refund an unused pass?
The official issued-pass rules allow a refund within validity at the sales location, less a 10% fee. Once the departure time of a train with an issued seat reservation has passed, no refund is available even if unused. An unexchanged seller voucher follows that seller’s cancellation conditions.
