JR TOKYO Wide Pass: three-day coverage, prices and reserved seats
JR TOKYO Wide Pass
The JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers Ordinary Car travel on designated routes in and around Tokyo · 東京 for three consecutive days. Eligible JR East Shinkansen and limited-express services and some other railways are included. The Tokaido Shinkansen and JR buses are excluded.
Key destinations
Tokyo / Kawaguchiko · 河口湖 / Izukyu-Shimoda · 伊豆急下田 / GALA Yuzawa · ガーラ湯沢
When does this pass suit your itinerary?
Compare the price with your total ordinary ticket costs if your trips around Tokyo fit into three consecutive days. You cannot split the pass into separate days spread across a longer trip.
Who can use it?
You must be a non-Japanese national with a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan. The official eligibility rules do not require Temporary Visitor status. Present your own original passport when purchasing or collecting; it must remain valid throughout the pass period.
Prices and child fares
The official price is JPY 16,000 adult or JPY 8,000 child. Children are aged 6–11 on the purchase date. Children under six do not need a pass if they do not need a reserved seat.
Collection depends on how you buy
Direct JR website bookings and agency electronic exchange orders have different collection procedures. Official online purchases can be collected at a supported passport-reader ticket machine or travel service center.
For an agency exchange order, bring the voucher and your own original passport to a designated counter. The current JR East list allows agency exchange at Haneda Airport · 羽田空港 Terminal 2 Tourist Information Center from 06:00 to 22:00, and Terminal 3 JR EAST Travel Service Center from 06:45 to 20:00. The Terminal 3 passport-reading machine collects direct JR website purchases only. Check the pass-specific location list before choosing a different station; all hours are Japan time.
Covered railways and exclusions
The official area includes Izukyu Railway towards Izukyu-Shimoda and Fujikyu Railway towards Kawaguchiko. Tokyo Monorail, Rinkai Line and Joshin Dentetsu are covered; on the New Shuttle, only Omiya · 大宮–Railway Museum · 鉄道博物館 is included. For through JR–Tobu limited expresses, either the departure or arrival station must be a JR station. The Tokaido Shinkansen and JR buses are excluded. Some Fujikyu sightseeing trains and reserved seats require additional charges. GALA Yuzawa Station operates only in winter and spring. Use the official English map to check the exact boundary stations.
Hayabusa and Komachi require separate limited-express charges, even on a section inside the pass area. Green Car, GranClass and sleeper accommodation also require their own charges and the applicable limited-express or express charge. The Ordinary Car pass does not provide those accommodation upgrades for a fare difference alone.
Changes, cancellations and refunds
After issue, the pass type and validity period cannot be changed. An unused pass within its validity period can be refunded at the selling location, with 10% of its JPY selling price deducted. If you have obtained a reserved-seat ticket, cancel an unused reservation before that train departs; the pass cannot be refunded after its scheduled departure. There is no refund or extension after use begins, including for train cancellations or delays. For an agency order not yet exchanged, use the seller’s own cancellation terms. Lost or stolen passes are not reissued.
From purchase to boarding
Choose your routes and start date. The pass covers three consecutive days from that date; you cannot buy multiple passes of this type with overlapping validity periods.
Bring your own original passport. A copy cannot be used to issue the pass, and you cannot lend or transfer it to a family member.
Collect the actual pass at a location supported by your purchase channel. For direct JR online collection at a compatible machine, bring your original passport with an IC chip. Do not apply that procedure to an agency exchange order.
Obtain reserved-seat tickets before boarding at a JR East reserved-seat machine, counter or travel center. Holding a pass does not secure a seat. The official guide allows seat reservations from one month before travel.
Use the actual pass at a compatible automatic gate and collect it on the other side. Use the staffed gate where automatic gates are unsupported, including on the New Shuttle section from Omiya to the Railway Museum.
Carry your original passport while travelling. Check the train, car and seat on each reserved-seat ticket. Pay separate fares and charges for routes outside the pass area or trains with additional charges.
Frequently asked questions
Can foreign residents of Japan use it?
Official eligibility is based on non-Japanese nationality and a foreign passport, rather than Temporary Visitor status. Each traveller must show their own original passport. Check any additional conditions attached to an agency’s selling option.
Does it cover the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka?
No. The Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded. Journeys outside the TOKYO Wide Pass area require separate tickets.
Can I take a Tobu limited express from Asakusa to Nikko?
Not if both the departure and arrival stations are Tobu stations. For covered through JR–Tobu limited expresses, one end of the journey must be a JR station. Tobu local trains are covered between Shimo-Imaichi · 下今市 and Tobu-Nikko · 東武日光 or Kinugawa-Onsen · 鬼怒川温泉.
Can I use three separate days?
No. The pass is valid for three consecutive days from your chosen start date.
Can I board a reserved-seat train with just the pass?
Get a reserved-seat ticket before using a reserved seat. Tsubasa, Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa cannot be boarded without one. Some other limited expresses have separate empty-seat rules; do not apply one rule to every train with reserved seating only.
What if I lose the pass or need different dates?
Lost or stolen passes are not reissued. The type and validity period of an issued pass cannot be changed.
Can an unused pass be refunded?
The official transport conditions allow the seller to refund an unused pass within its validity period after deducting 10%. If a train for which a reserved-seat ticket was issued has already departed, even an unused pass cannot be refunded. For an agency order not yet exchanged, check that seller’s cancellation conditions.
Does it cover Tokyo’s subway?
Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway are not part of the covered railway list. Buy separate subway tickets or use an IC card for those journeys. Do not treat the TOKYO Wide Pass as an all-operator city transport ticket.
Can I take the Shinkansen to Karuizawa?
Karuizawa · 軽井沢 is within the official map’s covered Hokuriku Shinkansen section. Use an eligible Ordinary Car service, obtaining a reserved-seat ticket before using a reserved seat. Check the exact destination against the map before travelling further.
