N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket: airport pickup, seats and transfers

N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket

The N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket covers one journey from Narita Airport · 成田空港 to the designated JR area and one return to the airport within 14 days. It is not an unlimited pass: each one-way journey ends when you leave the ticket gates.

When does this ticket suit your itinerary?

Compare it with separate tickets if you will use the Narita Express both after arrival and before departure, with the return within 14 days. For a one-way journey or departure from another airport, compare other tickets.

Who can use it?

Travellers with a passport issued by a country other than Japan are eligible. The official FAQ also allows holders of Japanese residence visas. Bring your own original passport when collecting the ticket.

Prices and child fares

The table shows official JPY prices, separate from the seller’s price and display currency. Adults are aged 12 or over; children are aged 6–11.

A child aged 5 or under travelling on your lap does not need this ticket. Buy a child ticket if they occupy their own seat.

Use the airport-to-city journey first

The ticket is valid for 14 days. The first journey must run from Narita Airport towards the city; the second must return from the covered area to Narita Airport. You cannot reverse the order.

Transfers within the covered JR area

Without leaving the gates, you can change from the Narita Express to other JR trains within the covered area. On the return, change from eligible JR trains to the Narita Express in the same way. Your arrival station and return departure station may differ if both are within the covered area.

The official map distinguishes the N’EX route from other eligible JR lines. N’EX serves Tokyo · 東京, Shinagawa · 品川, Shibuya · 渋谷, Shinjuku · 新宿, Yokohama · 横浜 and Ofuna · 大船. The wider JR area includes Omiya · 大宮, Toride · 取手, Takao · 高尾, Okutama · 奥多摩, Musashi-Itsukaichi · 武蔵五日市, Hashimoto · 橋本 and Kurihama · 久里浜. These are coverage examples, not a promise of a direct N’EX service to every station. Consult the linked map for the exact line and boundary before planning a transfer.

Where to collect: Narita station hours

Collect at Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station · 成田空港 or Narita Airport Terminal 2·3 Station · 空港第2ビル. Use the JR EAST Travel Service Center, JR ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi) or a reserved-seat machine with a passport reader. The service centers open 08:30–19:00 at Terminal 1 and 08:30–20:00 at Terminal 2·3. The ticket offices and passport-reader machines at both stations are listed as 06:30–21:45.

For a passport-reader machine, bring your original passport with an IC chip. A photocopy is not accepted. If you cannot use the machine, use a staffed collection location during its opening hours. The online booking confirmation is not the paper ticket for the gate.

Reserved seats and direct online purchases

Ordinary Car reserved seats on the Narita Express are included. For a direct JR-EAST Train Reservation online purchase, each traveller must create their own account and buy for themselves; purchases on someone else’s behalf are not permitted. For Green Car, you must pay the full Green Car charge and reserved-seat limited-express charge, rather than just the difference from Ordinary Car.

Reserve before boarding; reservations can be made up to one month ahead. For a Green Car reservation online, select the option to buy only the limited-express ticket so you do not pay the basic fare a second time. Check the additional amount before confirming.

If you miss your reserved train

If your flight is delayed and you can still change plans before your reserved departure, cancel the seat reservation and book a later train through the official service. A missed reservation does not guarantee a seat on the next train.

You may use an empty Ordinary Car seat on a later train the same day. Give up the seat if its reservation holder arrives. After landing, allow time for immigration, baggage collection and the walk to the station before collecting your tickets.

Cancellation and refunds

For a direct JR-EAST Train Reservation purchase that has not yet been collected, cancel by 23:50 Japan time on the day before use for a full refund. This also cancels seats booked with it; reserve them again if you buy a replacement ticket. After collecting the actual tickets, online cancellation is unavailable. The traveller must visit a station counter with the original payment card; another person cannot do this and the refund cannot go to a different card.

For passes bought through JR-EAST Train Reservation, the official cancellation guide lists a JPY 560 handling fee per person after that deadline, whether or not collected. If you have reserved a seat, a refund is not available after that train departs. These are the official online channel’s conditions; do not apply them automatically to a ticket bought from another seller.

Check November 2026 engineering-work changes

JR EAST announces changes to some Narita Express services on 6–8 November 2026. Affected trains run only between Narita Airport and Tokyo, with service beyond Tokyo towards Shinjuku or Ofuna suspended. Check the dated train-by-train notice for both journeys and plan your onward JR connection. This is a dated service change, not a change to the ticket’s normal validity area.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Check that both Narita journeys fit within 14 days and that your city arrival and departure stations are in the coverage area.

  2. For a JR-EAST Train Reservation purchase, each traveller must create their own account and buy their own ticket. Do not assume the same process applies to other sellers.

  3. Bring your original passport to a designated Narita collection location and collect the round-trip ticket and Ordinary Car reserved-seat tickets. Allow enough collection time before departure.

  4. Check your reserved train, car and seat before boarding. If transferring to another covered JR train, remain inside the gates; leaving them ends that one-way journey.

  5. Use the return from a covered-area station towards Narita Airport. It does not have to be the same station where you ended the outward journey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride around Tokyo without limits on the day I take N’EX?

No. You can transfer to JR trains within the covered area before leaving the gates, but exiting the gates ends that one-way journey.

Can I arrive at Shinjuku and return from Tokyo Station?

Yes, if both stations are in the coverage area. The first journey must go from the airport towards the city and the second from the city towards the airport.

Can foreign residents of Japan use it?

Yes. The official FAQ allows holders of a non-Japanese passport even if they have a Japanese residence visa.

What if I miss the train I reserved?

Use an empty Ordinary Car seat on a later train that day. Give up the seat if its reservation holder arrives.

Can I pay just the price difference to use Green Car?

No. The full Green Car charge and reserved-seat limited-express charge are additional. The round-trip ticket then covers only the basic fare within its valid area.

Where can I collect a ticket bought online?

Only at Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station or Narita Airport Terminal 2·3 Station. Bring your original passport; passport-reader machines require an IC-chip passport. Allow time to collect both the ticket and reserved-seat tickets before departure.

Is the luggage storage space reserved with my seat?

No. Large-luggage areas are available without a reservation on a first-come basis, and space is limited. Luggage size and shape may prevent it from fitting; check JR EAST’s luggage guidance before travelling.

Can I cancel online after collecting my paper ticket?

No. Visit a station counter yourself with the card used for the direct JR online purchase. The original card is required; the refund cannot be made to another card. Check the deadline, unused-ticket and reserved-train conditions before requesting a refund.
