Japan Rail Pass: seven, 14 or 21 days, prices and reservations
JAPAN RAIL PASS
The nationwide pass comes in 7-, 14- and 21-day Ordinary and Green Car versions. Nozomi and Mizuho services require the special additional ticket for pass holders.
Places in this guide: Tokyo (東京) · Kyoto (京都) · Shin-Osaka (新大阪) · Miyajima (宮島) · Miyajimaguchi (宮島口)
Compare your long-distance itinerary before choosing nationwide coverage
This pass is jointly offered by the six JR passenger companies. It covers specified JR services for seven, 14 or 21 consecutive days, with Ordinary Car and Green Car versions. Compare your planned individual fares rather than assuming a nationwide pass saves money. For journeys within one region, compare the relevant regional pass as well.
Eligibility depends on your passport and entry status
For a non-Japanese visitor, check Temporary Visitor entry status and the required passport stamp or sticker. If using an automated immigration gate, confirm how to obtain the evidence required for exchange. Carry the original passport while travelling; reading an Australian English page does not prove eligibility.

Japanese nationals living overseas have a separate documentary route: an original Japanese passport and specified evidence of at least ten consecutive years overseas residence. They must use an overseas exchange order, not direct JRPR purchase. Family and under-12 documentary rules vary with the evidence type; check the official Japanese requirements and the seller’s eligible-customer policy.

These are official JRPR online prices in JPY, not a Trip.com USD package quote or an AUD conversion. Overseas-agency prices changed for purchases from 1 October 2026, using the purchase location’s local time. Compare the correct channel and car class.

Child age and younger children needing their own seat
Child prices apply at ages 6–11. For direct online purchase, age is assessed on payment; for an overseas exchange order, on issue. Up to two children aged 1–5 can travel free with each adult or child passenger, but a child travelling alone or using their own reserved seat needs a child ticket. Infants under one are not counted in that two-child limit.

Exchange deadline, collection channel and original passports
An overseas agency exchange order must be exchanged within three months of issue. The official example is an order issued on 15 April that must be exchanged by 14 July. An exchange order, including any QR on it, is not the pass used for boarding.

Choose a location that accepts your purchase channel. The official table distinguishes direct-JR online collection from agency-order exchange; a passport-reading machine supporting direct online collection may not accept an agency order. For JRPR collection, bring the reservation number and original passports for every traveller on the booking.

Included railways, maps and Nozomi or Mizuho
Eligible JR railways, BRT and Tokyo Monorail are included. Other companies’ railway sections generally require separate fares, with narrowly defined through-travel exceptions. A railway included in a regional pass is not automatically included here.

The linked nationwide English route map is the April 2026 edition. Red station names mark exchange locations at that time, not current counter hours. Other companies’ lines drawn on the map are not blanket entitlements. Check the exact journey against the coverage conditions.

Nozomi and Mizuho need the dedicated supplementary ticket bought before boarding, used with a valid Japan Rail Pass for the specified section and accommodation. The pass alone is insufficient, even for a non-reserved seat.

JR local buses and the Miyajima ferry
Eligible JR local buses are included, but JR highway buses and some local routes are excluded. The JR West Miyajima Ferry between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima is included; the JPY 100 Miyajima visitor tax is separate when entering the island.
Reserve seats and check the car class before boarding
The pass does not secure a seat. Collect a seat ticket at a supported machine or JR counter before boarding a reserved service. Machines use the issued pass QR or reservation number and passport details; some trains have no non-reserved seats.

An Ordinary Car pass used in a Green Car needs both the Green Car charge and the limited express or express charge, not merely the difference between pass prices. GranClass and other specified premium accommodation have extra-charge rules even with a Green Car pass.

Direct JRPR advance booking is not available for agency orders
Only a pass bought directly through JRPR can use its advance online seat-booking service. After signing in, choose Reserve a Seat for the pass and enter the stations, travel date and passengers. Collect both the actual pass and seat tickets before travelling. An agency-order customer books at a counter or machine after exchange instead.

Seat bookings normally open at 10:00 Japan time one month before departure and close six minutes before departure. Special opening dates apply when the previous month has no matching date. A single pass purchase can cover up to six travellers including the purchaser.

The 110-itinerary JRPR/machine reservation threshold is not a limit on train rides. Changing or cancelling does not restore the count. Ask a JR counter about further reservations; overlapping journeys remain restricted.

Refunds depend on the purchase channel and collection status
For an unexchanged agency order, contact that seller. For direct JRPR purchase before collection, request an online refund by 23:30 Japan time on the day before validity begins; the operator fee is JPY 560 per pass. Cancel issued seat reservations as required before seeking a refund.

After collecting a direct-JR pass, eligible unused pre-start refunds are handled at distribution counters with the payment credit card; virtual cards cannot be presented for this counter process. An exchanged overseas-agency pass has a separate 10% JPY selling-price refund fee at an exchange office, subject to pre-start eligibility. Seller-order cancellation is not this issued-pass refund.

The issued pass cannot be changed into another ticket type or have its validity changed. Lost or stolen passes are not reissued. Once used, delays or suspensions do not extend its period or create an operator refund or accommodation-cost entitlement under these conditions.

Using your ticket
Compare your journeys, choose seven, 14 or 21 consecutive days and Ordinary or Green Car, and check the traveller’s eligibility.
Identify whether you received an agency exchange order or a direct-JRPR reservation number. An exchange order is not the gate ticket.
Choose a collection location accepting that purchase channel and take the original passports for all travellers, with the required entry-status evidence.
Collect the physical pass and obtain seat tickets for reserved trains. Agency-order holders reserve after exchange; direct-JRPR advance bookings still need ticket collection.
For Nozomi or Mizuho, buy the dedicated additional ticket before boarding and carry it with the valid nationwide pass.
Insert the physical pass at the automatic gate and retrieve it. A seat ticket or supplementary ticket alone does not replace it. Carry your original passport during travel.
Questions and answers
Is this the same as the JR West All Area Pass?
No. Japan Rail Pass is the six-company nationwide product. JR West All Area is a separate regional pass with different coverage, duration and conditions.
Can I board Nozomi or Mizuho with just the pass?
No. Buy the dedicated supplementary ticket before boarding and use it with the valid Japan Rail Pass for that journey.
Can an agency-order customer reserve seats through JRPR before arrival?
No. JRPR advance reservations are for passes bought directly through JRPR. Exchange an agency order first, then reserve at a supported machine or JR counter.
Can I show an exchange-order QR at the gate?
No. Exchange the order first. Insert the issued physical pass at the automatic gate and retrieve it.
Can I upgrade an Ordinary Car pass by paying only the Green Car difference?
No. Green Car travel requires the Green Car charge and the limited express or express charge. Premium accommodation has separate conditions even with a Green Car pass.
Does the 110-reservation threshold limit me to 110 train rides?
No. It concerns JRPR and machine seat reservations. Changes or cancellations do not restore the count. Ask a JR counter about further reservations.
Is the child price based on age on the travel date?
For direct online purchase it is based on the payment date; for an overseas exchange order, the issue date. The child band is 6–11.
Can a Japanese national living overseas buy through JRPR?
No. Eligible Japanese nationals overseas must use the overseas exchange-order channel with their original Japanese passport and specified residence documents. Check the seller’s own eligibility conditions as well.
