Hokkaido Rail Pass: five, seven or ten days and reserved seats

Hokkaido Rail Pass

Travel on the covered JR Hokkaido lines for 5, 7 or 10 consecutive days. The Hokkaido Shinkansen is excluded; reserve an Ordinary Car seat before boarding a limited express.

Places in this guide: Sapporo (札幌) · Hakodate (函館) · Kushiro (釧路) · New Chitose Airport (新千歳空港) · Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (新函館北斗) · Otaru (小樽)

Compare broader Hokkaido journeys, not just one return trip

For journeys from Sapporo towards several regions, such as Hakodate and Kushiro, compare the broad rail pass with the smaller area passes and separate tickets. Add your actual train fares and fit the journeys into five, seven or ten consecutive days. Non-travel days still count.

Advance and station prices

Advance prices apply to an overseas agency exchange order or JR-EAST Train Reservation; station prices apply to purchase at a designated JR Hokkaido counter. Children are aged 6–11. All amounts below are official JPY prices, not AUD conversions or a promise of a platform’s package price.

JR Hokkaido coverage and Shinkansen exclusions

Eligible trains on all JR Hokkaido lines are covered, but the Hokkaido Shinkansen, South Hokkaido Railway, subway and streetcars are not. Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto appearing on the map does not mean this pass covers a Shinkansen departure there.

The SL Fuyu-no-Shitsugen Train requires an additional reserved-seat charge. Do not treat every sightseeing train seat as included in the pass.

Which buses are included?

Some JR Hokkaido Bus services are included; intercity and temporary buses are excluded. On the Sapporo–Otaru express-bus route, only services operated by JR Hokkaido Bus qualify. Take a numbered boarding ticket, then hand it to the driver and show the pass when getting off. Other companies’ buses are not covered.

Choose a counter that handles the rail pass

The recorded designated stations include New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Noboribetsu, Asahikawa, Obihiro, Kushiro, Abashiri, Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Hakodate. Check the linked station guide for the specific pass counter and its processing hours: the station ticket office’s general hours may differ. Allow separately for immigration, luggage collection, walking and counter queues.

Original passport and exchange-order requirements

Bring a valid original passport issued outside Japan when buying or exchanging the pass, and carry it during travel. A residence card or passport copy is not a substitute. The Australian English page does not establish your eligibility; any additional seller-package restrictions need separate verification.

A seller’s paper or electronic exchange order must be exchanged for the actual pass. Match the name exactly to the passport. The recorded operator conditions give paper orders three months from issue and electronic orders 90 days for exchange.

Reserve Ordinary Car seats before boarding

All JR Hokkaido limited express trains have reserved seating. Collect an Ordinary Car seat ticket before boarding; you cannot have a seat assigned on the train. After receiving the physical pass, use a supported station counter or reserved-seat machine. A seat ticket does not replace the pass at the gate.

If you change trains after receiving the seat ticket, change the reservation at a ticket counter. Green Car travel requires both the Green Car and limited express charges, not merely a fare difference.

Full trains and missed reservations

Within the pass’s covered area, the operator allows standing in Ordinary Cars on specified full limited express services: Hokuto, Suzuran, Kamui, Lilac, Soya, Sarobetsu, Okhotsk, Ozora, Tokachi and Furano Lavender Express. This is not Green Car access or permission to travel beyond your pass boundary.

A vacant Ordinary Car seat may be used temporarily under that rule, but give it up when its reserved passenger arrives. Some temporary services require a seat ticket. If you miss a reservation, ask about the next eligible service and its seating arrangements rather than assuming a replacement seat is guaranteed.

Counter exchange now; a future machine service is separate

At the 6 October 2026 check, use the designated exchange counter. Passport-reader machines are scheduled to start on 20 October; support is restricted by purchase channel and exchange-order issuer. Do not assume every Trip.com QR voucher qualifies.

Changes, cancellation and lost passes

After the actual pass is issued, its start date and pass type cannot be changed. Lost or stolen passes are not replaced. The same type of pass cannot be bought or used for overlapping validity periods, and it cannot be transferred to another traveller.

For an unexchanged order, contact the seller and follow that seller’s cancellation rules. The operator lists eligible unused-pass refunds at designated purchase/exchange counters before the start date or while unused within validity. The fee is 10% of the JPY selling price, or JPY 560 for a JR-EAST Train Reservation purchase. Confirm your ticket’s status with the counter; cancellations or delays do not grant an extension or a refund after travel starts.

Questions and answers

Can I board using the QR on my exchange order?

No. Exchange the order for the actual pass at a designated counter. Insert only the pass at the automatic gate; a seat ticket is not the gate ticket either.

Official source

Do limited express trains have non-reserved seats?

JR Hokkaido limited express trains are all reserved. Obtain a seat ticket before boarding. Standing on a full train is restricted to the specified Ordinary Car services within your pass area.

Official source

Can I change the start date after collection?

No. Once the actual pass is issued, its start date and pass type cannot be changed. Confirm the dates at exchange.

Official source

Is the refund fee the same for every purchase channel?

No. Eligible issued-pass refunds have a 10% fee based on the JPY selling price, or JPY 560 for JR-EAST Train Reservation purchases. An unexchanged agency order follows the seller’s conditions.

Official source

Can I use a passport-reader machine at the current check date?

Use a designated counter at the 6 October 2026 check. The 20 October machine launch has restricted channel and issuer support, not blanket acceptance of Trip.com vouchers.

Official sourceOfficial source

Can I take the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto?

No. Hokkaido Shinkansen travel is excluded. The station’s appearance on the pass map does not include the separate Shinkansen fare and limited express ticket.
