Planning Tochigi: temples, gyoza and the lake
Stay near Nikko's stations for more time with temple architecture, or west of Utsunomiya Station if the underground quarry and gyoza are your main interests. Consider a lake stay if you want to visit the waterfall and villas on separate days. Mountain buses and hotel changes take time, so these itineraries do not squeeze both cities and the lake into one day.
Temples, an underground quarry or the lakeshore?
Toshogu and Rinnoji in Nikko, Oya History Museum in Utsunomiya, and Kegon Falls and the embassy villas at Lake Chuzenji involve different journeys and types of visit. Compare prices, entrances and seasonal hours in the attraction guides.
Daily itineraries
Choose whether to focus on Toshogu and Rinnoji's architecture, Oya's underground quarry and Utsunomiya gyoza, or an overnight stay at Lake Chuzenji. Compare itineraries by length, from city visits to lake stays. Some leave from Tokyo Station and return to a different station, Asakusa.
2 days / 1 night
Spend one night in Nikko to visit Toshogu and Rinnoji on separate days, or one night in Utsunomiya for the underground quarry and gyoza. The Nikko itinerary starts and ends in Asakusa; the Utsunomiya itinerary starts and ends at Tokyo Station.
3 days / 2 nights
With A, stay two nights in Nikko and take a waterfall and lake trip on the middle day. With B, stay two nights in Utsunomiya and visit Oya History Museum and Nikko's temples on separate days. Neither plan requires a hotel change.
4 days / 3 nights
A adds a night at the lake after two nights in Nikko and visits the British villa on the final day. B combines one night in Utsunomiya and two in Nikko with Oya, gyoza and a lake day trip. B leaves from Tokyo Station and returns to Asakusa.
5 days / 4 nights
A combines two nights in Utsunomiya, one in Nikko and one at the lake, visiting the underground quarry and both villas. B stays two nights each in Nikko and at the lake, visiting the villas and museum on separate days. A's day at three shrine and temple sites involves plenty of walking.

Finish sightseeing in time for the bus and your return train
Use Tobu limited express trains for a return trip from Asakusa, or ordinary JR trains and the Nikko Line when leaving from Tokyo or Utsunomiya. JR Nikko Station and Tobu-Nikko Station are separate stations. The three-night B and four-night A itineraries leave from Tokyo Station and return to Asakusa.
On the day you come down from the lake, take a station-bound bus from Chuzenji Onsen terminal. At the time checked, boarding point 26B was separate from 26A for Yumoto-bound buses. Allow for your sightseeing finish time, mountain-road traffic and a buffer after reaching Tobu-Nikko when choosing your return limited express train. Bus pass dates vary by itinerary
One-night A uses a separate World Heritage day pass on each of the first two days. One-night B uses the Oya sightseeing day pass on day one only. Two-night A uses the World Heritage pass on day one and the Chuzenji Onsen two-day pass on days two and three; do not add another Sannai bus pass for those days. Two-night B uses the Oya pass on day one and the World Heritage pass on day two.
Three-night A uses separate World Heritage passes on the first two days and the Chuzenji pass on days three and four. Three-night B uses the Oya pass on day one and the Chuzenji pass on days three and four. Four-night A uses the Oya pass on day two, the World Heritage pass on day three and the Chuzenji pass on days four and five. Four-night B uses separate World Heritage passes on the first two days and ordinary one-way lake bus fares on days three and five. Staying two nights at the lake puts the return trip outside the validity of a single two-day pass.
The World Heritage pass costs JPY 600 for an adult and is valid for one day; the Chuzenji Onsen pass costs JPY 2,300 and is valid for two days. The JPY 2,200 Oya pass includes museum admission, so do not add JPY 1,000 again. Check sales conditions and covered routes for your new travel dates.

NIKKO PASS is for overseas visitors; accompanying Japanese nationals may also buy it. The world heritage area pass is valid for two days and ALL AREA for four days. Both exclude limited express supplements and shrine and temple admission. The world heritage area pass does not cover the Lake Chuzenji bus routes. A single four-day pass cannot cover both departure from Asakusa and the final return on a five-day trip.
JR journeys from Utsunomiya and Kanto Bus services to Oya are separate from the Tobu pass's return journey from Asakusa. These budgets are examples based on ordinary rail tickets and the bus passes used in each itinerary. They are not estimates of pass savings or booking quotes.
The JR TOKYO Wide Pass is valid for three consecutive days from your selected start date. It costs JPY 16,000 for an adult and requires an original passport issued by a country other than Japan. Temporary Visitor status is not required. Compare its valid dates and coverage with the JR Tokyo–Utsunomiya–Nikko journeys, but it does not include the Tobu-only limited express between Tobu-Nikko and Asakusa or the Oya and lake buses in these itineraries. Gyoza · 餃子
Walk Gyoza Street and try different gyoza at Kirasse Main Store in Utsunomiya. Its permanent outlets and daily rotating area have different operating arrangements, so check the hours for the area you plan to use. The city tourism organisation also has a food walking route.

Yuba · 湯波
Nikko yuba is made from the skin that forms when soy milk is heated. The Nikko Tourism Association introduces it as a local food and lists restaurants serving it. Choose a meal stop before or after the temples, then check the restaurant's menu and opening days.
Avoid counting bus passes and admission twice
These reference prices are for one adult. Check rail ticket types, seasonal fares and facility hours for your travel dates.
The day you visit Oya History Museum
The JPY 2,200 Oya sightseeing day pass includes museum admission, so do not add the standard JPY 1,000 adult admission again. If paying for the museum separately, check its cash-only payment and underground access restrictions.

Temple and lake buses use different passes
The JPY 600 World Heritage bus pass is valid for one day and does not reach Chuzenji Onsen. The JPY 2,300 Chuzenji Onsen pass is valid for two days. If staying two nights at the lake, your outbound and return trips span three days and cannot both use a single two-day pass.
Choose tickets for the places you will visit
Toshogu's JPY 1,600 ticket is separate from the JPY 900 combined ticket for Rinnoji's Sanbutsudo Hall and Taiyuin. The Kegon Falls lift costs JPY 600, and the combined embassy villa ticket costs JPY 450. With the combined villa ticket, do not add the JPY 300 individual tickets again.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to stay at Lake Chuzenji to see it?
You can stay near Nikko's stations and visit the waterfall and lake as a day trip. To visit the British villa the following day, compare two nights in Nikko followed by one at the lake. Two nights in Nikko and two at the lake let you visit both villas and the Natural Science Museum on separate days. For lake stays, check mountain bus services and your return journey before arranging the hotel change.

Where should I stay for gyoza and Nikko's temples?
See two-night B for a stay in Utsunomiya with a Nikko day trip. For more time with Nikko's temples and lake, compare three-night B: one night in Utsunomiya followed by two in Nikko. That itinerary leaves from Tokyo Station and returns to Asakusa.

Can I visit both embassy villas on the lake day?
These itineraries visit the waterfall and villas on separate days. An overnight lake stay includes the British villa on the final day; see the four-night itineraries to visit both villas. The official walking time from the terminal is about 35 minutes each way, so check opening dates and allow enough time for your return bus.
