One night in Yamanashi: explore one base

Choose one base for two days. For Fuji views, ride the ropeway on day-one afternoon and visit the Gem Museum the next day. Arrive in Kawaguchiko around noon.

For indoor art and ruins, visit Kofu art on day one and Maizuru Park on day two. Arrive for morning art and take a bus from the south exit. If you leave on the morning of day two, omit sightseeing that day.

Ropeway viewpoint and Gem Museum

Stay one night near Kawaguchiko Station for ropeway views on day one and gem exhibitions the next. Choose the viewpoint on a day with good weather. Depart in the afternoon after day-two sightseeing.

Day 1: Kawaguchiko Station → ropeway viewpoint → Kawaguchiko Station

  1. Kawaguchiko Station → Ropeway Lakeside Station

Arrive at Kawaguchiko Station around noon and have lunch nearby. Official guidance gives about 15 minutes on foot to Lakeside Station. Ride the ropeway first in the afternoon, then take a short lakeside walk. Allow time at the viewpoint and time spent waiting in line to finish before the final upward/downward rides. Check seasonal last departures with the operator.

  2. Ropeway Lakeside Station → Kawaguchiko Station and same hotel

If wind suspends the ropeway or lines are long, omit it and rest by the lake. Kofu’s art museum is in another city, so do not treat it as an immediate replacement. Return to the station area for dinner and the same hotel.

Strong winds or inspections can suspend the ropeway. Check last upward/downward services and suspension notices for your date.

Day 2: Kawaguchiko Station → Yamanashi Gem Museum → Kawaguchiko Station

  1. Kawaguchiko Station → Yamanashi Gem Museum

From station stand 1, take the Red Line toward Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center. Read station departure and arrival at stop 6, Yamanashi Gem Museum/Kawaguchiko, in your date’s timetable together, and choose a station-bound return. Follow museum signs to the exhibition entrance after alighting. Add the stop-to-entrance walk to bus ride time.

  2. Facility entrance → Mineral and gem exhibitions

The museum closes on Wednesdays except public holidays, Golden Week and July–August. Do not replace museum sightseeing with the free shop on a closing day; change your visiting date. Winter opening is 09:30, so match your bus arrival with actual opening.

  3. Yamanashi Gem Museum → Return to station and hotel

See gems and minerals in the morning. Unlike day-one Mt. Fuji views, today focuses on indoor displays; have lunch and rest near the museum. For the return, use the Kawaguchiko Station-bound stop and your chosen service. The circular timetable repeats stop names, so match museum departure and station arrival columns in the station-bound rows. Choose a bus after exhibitions, lunch and the walk to the stop. Allow delays and departure preparations for an afternoon onward service. This visit does not fit a morning departure.

Kofu collections and castle ruins

Choose this for art collections and Kofu Castle’s stone walls/restored buildings. Stay one night near Kofu Station, taking an art-museum bus on the first morning and walking to the ruins the next day.

Day 1: Kofu Station south stand 1 → art museum → Kofu Station

  1. Kofu Station south bus stand 1 → Prefectural art museum

Arrive in Kofu for morning art and head to south bus terminal stand 1. Take a designated museum-stopping route, such as route 35 to Nirasaki via Okusa. Read station departure/museum arrival in the official two-way timetable, checking weekday, weekend/holiday and specific-period symbols (○/●/×). Change dates for closures including Mondays, or the next day when Monday is a public holiday, and days after public holidays. If arriving late, adjust art/meal time or change the visiting day.

  2. Art museum → Station and same hotel

After exhibitions and lunch, take a Kofu Station-bound bus from the museum stop. Read museum departure and station arrival together in the official timetable; choose one you can catch after walking to the stop. Get off south of the station and return to the same nearby hotel.

Check date-specific exhibitions and temporary closures. The south art-museum bus stand differs from north-side K1.

Day 2: Kofu Station south side → Maizuru Castle Park → Kofu Station

  1. Kofu Station south side → Maizuru Castle Park

Start from Kofu Station’s south exit in the morning. Tourism-association guidance gives about three minutes on foot to Maizuru Castle Park. See stone walls and restored gates, with Inari Turret/Kurogane Gate interiors on open days. Today, you explore surviving walls and ruins after yesterday’s art visit. If climbing to the keep base would be difficult, choose lower-park walks instead.

  2. Facility entrance → Castle-ruin walks and open buildings

Inari Turret and Kurogane Gate are open 09:00–16:30, last admission 16:00. They close on Mondays, days after public holidays, and December 29–January 3; open when Monday is a public holiday. The park itself is always open, so limit visits to exterior ruins on building-closing days. In heavy rain, avoid climbing around high walls and shorten sightseeing.

  3. Maizuru Castle Park → Kofu Station and departure preparations

Return along the same route to Kofu Station’s south exit for lunch and your departure. The official approximately three-minute park–exit walk excludes sightseeing, meals and platform access. This route leaves on an afternoon Chuo Line train; an early-morning departure leaves little time for ruins.

Outdoor stairs lead to the keep base. If stairs would be difficult or rain is heavy, explore only the lower ruins.

Checked costs and exclusions: 1,200 yen partial total for one adult

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the Gem Museum before a second-morning departure?

A morning departure leaves little time for a final-day visit to Yamanashi Gem Museum. This route visits morning displays, returns to the station and leaves in the afternoon. To move the visit to day one, compare arrival, museum hours and ropeway wait times together.
