No admission ticket is required for standard worship in the grounds. Meiji Jingu’s garden and museum each charge a separate JPY 500 fee.
Opening hours
The grounds open year-round, with gate hours changing monthly around sunrise and sunset. October hours are 05:40–16:40. Internal facilities such as the garden and museum may have shorter hours; check them separately.

What to see at Meiji Jingu
Through the forest to the main sanctuary
Enter from the Harajuku-side southern entrance and walk to the main sanctuary. The station is close to the entrance, but the sanctuary is further inside. Allow time for the forest walk in both directions and for worship.
How to get to Meiji Jingu
From JR Harajuku or Meiji-jingumae subway station exit 2, go to the southern entrance, about one minute away. Walk at least another ten minutes inside to the main sanctuary.
Before you visit
Check gate closing time in the late afternoon
Gate hours change monthly. If planning a visit after evening sightseeing in Harajuku, check the closing time for your travel month first.
Adding the garden or museum?
Visit these separately from worship in the grounds. Both charge admission and may have shorter hours than the grounds. Check each facility’s visitor guide.

Questions about Meiji Jingu
How long is the walk from Harajuku to the main sanctuary?
The southern entrance is about one minute from the station, followed by at least another ten minutes to the main sanctuary. From Meiji-jingumae subway station, use exit 2 for the southern entrance.
