Ehime travel: how should I divide Matsuyama, Uchiko and Ozu?

Stay near Okaido for castle visits and city meals, or near Dogo Onsen to rest after bathing. Focus on Matsuyama for one or two nights; three or four nights allow JR trips to historic Uchiko and Ozu. Choose separate day trips from the same accommodation or one or two nights in Ozu for the castle and riverside.

Castles and baths, or historic-town walks?

Matsuyama Castle combines an old keep interior with city views from above; Dogo combines baths and shopping-street walks. Choose Uchiko for historic streets or Ozu for a wooden keep and riverside. Interior admission, ropeways and bath lounges change costs by choice. Uchiko-Za's main building is closed for works; do not schedule interior viewing.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose the order of castle and bath visits in the city around accommodation, using JR for Uchiko and Ozu days. Keep one base for town day trips or move to Ozu for streets and castle on different days. Daily steps distinguish trams from JR Matsuyama access.

2 days / 1 night

Choose Okaido for the castle keep and baths or Dogo for bathing and Honmaru views. For late arrival or morning departure, focus on one rather than fitting both.

3 days / 2 nights

Compare separate castle and bath days with a day in historic Uchiko. Uchiko is beyond city trams; add return JR and station-to-street walks.

4 days / 3 nights

Keep Matsuyama accommodation for separate Uchiko and Ozu day trips, or move via Uchiko for one Ozu night. Moving reduces Ozu–Matsuyama returns but requires sightseeing to fit onward trains.

5 days / 4 nights

Use one base for castle, baths and towns, or stay two nights in Ozu for streets and castle on separate days. For the move via Uchiko, check whether you can walk with light luggage; otherwise compare the direct alternative.

Stay below the castle or near the baths?

Okaido

Okaido suits walking to Matsuyama Castle's ropeway and eating in the city. For Dogo Onsen days, take a Dogo-bound tram.

Use the current timetable for airport departure

Recorded airport-bus fares and routes follow Iyotetsu's 1–24 October 2026 guidance. Check new schedules and fares afterwards. Dogo, Okaido and JR Matsuyama airport stops differ; some airport-origin buses skip Dogo or Okaido. For final-day morning departures, move baths and castle visits earlier or omit them, allowing train and bus waits and airport check-in. Airport buses are excluded from sightseeing subtotals.

Divide Matsuyama city from Uchiko and Ozu

Start city visits with the castle or baths near your accommodation, keeping separate JR days for historic towns. Keep Matsuyama accommodation for one day in each town, or add an Ozu night to four-day courses, or two nights to five-day courses.

Okaido and Matsuyama Castle

Choose Okaido for keep viewing and city dinners. Walk about five minutes from the tram stop to Shinonomeguchi's lower ropeway station. After reaching the summit, walk further to Honmaru and the keep ticket office; internal stairs are steep. Decide between Honmaru views and paid keep interiors first.

Dogo Onsen Station and shopping street

Stay near Dogo for an easy return to accommodation after bathing. Walk Haikara Street from the station to Honkan, with shopping-street meals before or after bathing. Honkan is a public bathhouse, not accommodation. Bath-only and lounge courses have different prices and durations.

JR Matsuyama and trains outside the city

Use JR Matsuyama for Uchiko and Ozu days. It differs from Matsuyama City; travel separately by city tram from Okaido or Dogo. Allow accommodation-to-tram-to-JR-gates time alongside train times.

City tram timetableMatsuyama Station

Uchiko Station and historic streets

Take JR via Uchiko for old buildings and lanes. The historic district's southern entrance is about one kilometre (a 15-minute walk) from the station. Iyo-Nagahama trains skip Uchiko. Uchiko-Za is closed for repairs, so choose street walks and exterior viewing. For house and museum entry, check individual fees and closures.

Historic Ozu, riverside and castle

Choose two Ozu nights to separate castle viewing from old-town and riverside walks. A one-night course moves via Uchiko then visits the castle next day. Iyo-Ozu–castle walking takes about 30 minutes; allow walks before and after viewing. Castle ticket sales end 16:30. For day trips, check Matsuyama return trains; for Ozu stays, check next-day departures.

Plan tram and JR directions separately

Do not search JR Matsuyama and Matsuyama City as one station. Check origin, destination and tram number, adding time to change to JR. Verify walking endpoints and adapt routes to your accommodation address and on-site access signs. Map estimates exclude waits and viewing.

Choose sea-bream rice by preparation

Compare meals in Okaido on castle days and Dogo shops on bath days; leave local lunch time for Uchiko and Ozu. Confirm specific menus and prices before booking.

Rice cooked with sea bream

Matsuyama's official tourism guide describes rice cooked with sea bream and kombu placed on top. Compare this for cooked fish and rice. Northern Hojo preparations and shop ingredients can differ; read menu descriptions alongside photographs.

A sashimi preparation

Matsuyama tourism guidance describes sea-bream sashimi as the main style in southern areas. For raw fish, confirm the menu's preparation before ordering. Compare both styles and choose a shop in the area where you are eating.

Intercity JR and city-tram costs

Course subtotals include only listed facilities, unreserved JR limited expresses and city trams. Check excluded airport buses, meals, accommodation and house exhibitions separately.

Choose tram 3 or 5 by destination

From Okaido, choose Dogo-bound tram 3 for baths or JR-bound tram 5 for JR Matsuyama. Tram 3's Matsuyama City Station is not JR. Recorded adult city fares are JPY 250 cash or JPY 230 nationwide IC per ride; subtotals distinguish both payment methods.
