Ehime travel: how should I divide Matsuyama, Uchiko and Ozu?

Stay near Okaido for the castle and city dining, or near Dogo Onsen to rest after a bath. Spend one or two nights around Matsuyama; with three or four nights, take JR trains to Uchiko’s old streets and Ozu. Choose separate day trips from one base or one or two nights in Ozu for its castle and riverside.

Castle and bath, or old-town walks?

See the historic keep and summit city views at Matsuyama Castle, or bathe at Dogo Onsen and walk its arcade. Choose Uchiko for old streets or Ozu for a wooden keep and riverside. Interior, ropeway and hot-spring rest-room choices change costs. Uchiko-za’s main hall is closed for works and excluded.

Itineraries by trip length

Fit Matsuyama’s castle and bath to your accommodation location; use JR on Uchiko/Ozu days. Choose return trips from one base or move to Ozu for streets and castle on separate days. Daily routes distinguish city trams from access to JR Matsuyama.

1 night, 2 days

Choose an Okaido base for the keep and bath or Dogo for bathing and Honmaru views. For a late arrival or next-morning departure, focus on one visit if both do not fit.

2 nights, 3 days

Compare separate city-facility days with a day for Uchiko’s old streets. Uchiko is not reached by city tram alone; add JR return travel and station-to-street walking.

3 nights, 4 days

Choose three nights in Matsuyama with separate Uchiko/Ozu returns, or one Ozu night after passing Uchiko. Moving accommodation reduces returns to Matsuyama but requires fitting sightseeing around the next train on moving day.

4 nights, 5 days

Visit castle, bath and both towns from one accommodation, or spend two Ozu nights for walks and castle on separate days. Assess whether you can walk with light bags on the via-Uchiko move; otherwise, check direct travel.

Stay below the castle or in the hot-spring area?

Okaido

Okaido is convenient for walking to Matsuyama Castle’s ropeway and dining in the city. Take a Dogo Onsen-bound tram on your hot-spring day.

Around Dogo Onsen Station

Look near Dogo Onsen Station if you want a short return to your accommodation after bathing. You must travel separately to JR Matsuyama Station for Uchiko, Ozu or other cities.

One or two nights in Ozu

Stay in Ozu to explore the old town without returning to Matsuyama each day. If flying from Matsuyama Airport on departure day, check both the train from Iyo-Ozu and the airport bus outside JR Matsuyama.

For accommodation bag storage, plan permitted hours and the journey back to collect bags together. General Uchiko storage is currently unconfirmed. Compare a Uchiko walk with light bags against direct Iyo-Ozu travel with large bags.

Choose the latest timetable for airport departure day

Recorded airport-bus fares/routes use Iyotetsu’s 1–24 October 2026 guidance. Check new timetables/fares afterwards. Airport-bound stops at Dogo Onsen Station, Okaido and JR Matsuyama-Ekimae differ; some airport departures skip Dogo/Okaido. For a morning final-day departure, move bathing/castle earlier or omit it, allowing train/bus waits and airport procedures. Airport buses are excluded from the partial sightseeing subtotal.

Divide city days from Uchiko and Ozu

In the city, begin with the castle or hot spring nearer your accommodation. Set aside separate JR days for old towns. Keep a Matsuyama base for two day trips, or choose one Ozu night in four days or two in five.

Okaido and Matsuyama Castle

Choose Okaido for the keep and city dinner. Walk about 5 minutes from the tram stop to Shinonomeguchi ropeway’s lower station. Even at the summit, walk onwards to Honmaru and the keep ticket office; keep stairs are steep. Decide between Honmaru views and paid interior admission first.

Dogo Onsen Station and arcade

Dogo Onsen Station suits a nearby return after bathing. Walk along Haikara-dori to Honkan, with arcade dining before/after. Honkan is a public bathhouse, not accommodation. Bath-only and rest-room options differ in price and permitted time.

JR Matsuyama Station for trains outside the city

Use JR Matsuyama on Uchiko/Ozu days. It differs from Matsuyama-shi and requires separate city-tram access from Okaido/Dogo. Allow accommodation-to-tram-to-JR-gates time alongside train times.

City tram timetableMatsuyama Station

Uchiko Station and old streets

Take JR via Uchiko for old buildings and lanes. The old streets’ southern entrance is about 1 km/15 minutes from the station. Trains via Iyo-Nagahama do not pass Uchiko. Uchiko-za’s main hall is closed for restoration; choose street walks and its exterior rather than interior admission. Check individual house/museum fees and closures.

Ozu old streets, riverside and castle

Choose two nights in Ozu to separate the castle from old-street/riverside walks. A one-night course moves via Uchiko and visits the castle next day. Iyo-Ozu to castle is about 30 minutes on foot; allow walking before/after. Ticket sales end 16:30. For a day trip, check the Matsuyama return; for an overnight stay, check the next day’s departure too.

Navigate city trams and JR separately

Do not search JR Matsuyama and Matsuyama-shi as one station. Check origins, destinations and tram numbers, adding city-to-JR transfer time. Confirm walking endpoints, then adjust to your accommodation address and local access signs. Map estimates exclude waits and visits.

Choose the style of sea bream rice first

Look around Okaido on castle day, Dogo’s arcade on bathing day and allow town lunch on Uchiko/Ozu days. Check specific restaurant menus/prices before booking.

Rice cooked with sea bream

Matsuyama City’s official guide describes sea bream and kelp placed over rice and cooked together. Look for this style if you want cooked fish with rice. Northern Hojo preparations and individual ingredients may differ; compare menu photos and descriptions.

Matsuyama City: two styles of sea bream rice

The sashimi style

Matsuyama’s tourism guide says the sashimi style predominates in the south. For sea bream sashimi, check how the dish is prepared before ordering. Compare both styles, then choose a restaurant in that day’s neighbourhood.

JR outside the city and city-tram costs

Course subtotals cover only listed facilities, non-reserved JR limited expresses and city trams. Check exclusions such as airport buses, meals, accommodation and house exhibitions separately.

Distinguish trams 3 and 5 by destination

From Okaido, take tram 3 towards Dogo or tram 5 towards JR Matsuyama-Ekimae. Tram 3’s Matsuyama-shi is not JR. The recorded adult city-tram single is JPY 250 cash or JPY 230 with a nationwide transport IC card. Course subtotals show both payment methods.
