Ehime Travel: How Should You Divide Matsuyama, Uchiko, and Ozu?

Stay near Okaido if your focus is the castle and city meals, or near Dogo Onsen if you want to return to your hotel after a bath. With one or two nights, focus on Matsuyama. With three or four, take JR trains to Uchiko's historic streets and Ozu. Choose between day trips to each town from one base or a one- or two-night stay in Ozu for the castle and riverside.

Castle and hot springs, or historic-town walks?

Explore Matsuyama Castle's historic keep and hilltop city views, or bathe at Dogo Onsen and walk its shopping streets. Choose Uchiko for historic streets, or Ozu for a wooden keep and riverside. Costs depend on keep admission, ropeway use, and access to hot-spring relaxation rooms. Uchiko-za's main building is closed for construction, so interior visits are excluded.

Itineraries by trip length

In Matsuyama, plan the castle and hot springs around your hotel. Use JR for Uchiko and Ozu. Choose separate town day trips from one hotel or move to Ozu for street walks and the castle on different days. The daily routes distinguish city tram journeys from travel through JR Matsuyama Station.

2 days, 1 night

Choose Okaido for the keep and hot springs, or Dogo for bathing and views from the castle's main enclosure. With a late arrival or morning departure the next day, focus on one attraction rather than fitting in both.

3 days, 2 nights

Compare separate days for the castle and bathing with a day in Uchiko's historic streets. Uchiko is beyond the city tram network, so add JR round-trip travel and walks between the station and streets.

4 days, 3 nights

Stay in Matsuyama for separate day trips to Uchiko and Ozu, or travel via Uchiko for one night in Ozu. Changing hotels reduces trips back to Matsuyama, but you must fit sightseeing around your next train on the transfer day.

5 days, 4 nights

Visit the castle, hot springs, and both towns from one hotel, or stay two nights in Ozu to split street walks and the castle across separate days. To change hotels via Uchiko, check that you can walk with light luggage; otherwise, use the direct option.

Stay below the castle or near the hot springs?

Okaido

Stay near Okaido to walk to the Matsuyama Castle ropeway and eat in the city. For Dogo Onsen, take a tram bound for Dogo Onsen.

Near Dogo Onsen Station

Look near Dogo Onsen Station if you want a short return to your hotel after a bath. For Uchiko, Ozu, or onward travel to another city, allow a separate journey to JR Matsuyama Station.

Luggage when changing hotels

If you plan to leave bags at a hotel, check storage hours and allow time to return for them. General luggage storage in Uchiko is currently unconfirmed. With light bags, consider a walk around Uchiko; with large bags, compare going directly to Iyo-Ozu.

Use the latest timetable for airport departure day

Current airport-bus fares and routes are based on Iyotetsu's October 1–24, 2026 guide. After that period, check the new timetable and fares. Airport-bound stops at Dogo Onsen Station, Okaido, and JR Matsuyama Station are separate; some buses from the airport do not stop at Dogo or Okaido. For a morning flight, move bathing or castle visits to an earlier day or skip them. Leave time for train and bus waits and airport check-in. Airport buses are excluded from sightseeing subtotals.

Divide your time between Matsuyama, Uchiko, and Ozu

In the city, start with the castle or hot springs closer to your hotel. Set aside JR travel days for the historic towns. Stay in Matsuyama for separate day trips, or choose four days and three nights with one night in Ozu, or five days and four nights with two.

Okaido and Matsuyama Castle

Choose Okaido for the keep and dinner in the city. Walk about five minutes from the tram stop to Shinonomeguchi lower ropeway station. After reaching the upper station, you still walk to the main enclosure and keep ticket counter. Keep stairs are steep. Decide whether you want free enclosure views or paid admission inside the keep.

Dogo Onsen Station and shopping streets

Stay near Dogo Onsen Station for a short hotel return after bathing. Walk along Haikara-dori to Honkan and eat in the shopping streets before or after your bath. Honkan is a public bathhouse with no lodging. Bathing-only courses and courses with relaxation rooms have different prices and visit lengths.

JR Matsuyama Station and trains out of the city

Use JR Matsuyama Station for Uchiko and Ozu. It is separate from Matsuyama City Station, with an additional city tram journey from Okaido or Dogo. Beyond train times, allow time from your hotel through the tram journey to the JR gates.

Uchiko Station and historic streets

Take a JR train via Uchiko for historic buildings and lanes. The southern entrance is about one kilometer, or a 15-minute walk, from the station. Trains via Iyo-Nagahama do not pass through Uchiko. Uchiko-za's main building is closed for repairs, so plan a street walk and exterior views. Check separate admission and closures for houses and museums.

Ozu's historic streets, riverside, and castle

Stay two nights in Ozu to split the castle and historic-street and riverside walks across separate days. The one-night option moves via Uchiko to Ozu, then visits the castle the next day. The station-to-castle walk is about 30 minutes; allow walking time before and after the visit. Ticket sales end at 4:30 p.m. For a day trip, check the return train to Matsuyama; for an Ozu stay, check your next day's departure.

Navigate city trams and JR separately

Do not look up JR Matsuyama Station and Matsuyama City Station as the same station. Check origins, destinations, and tram numbers, and add transfer time from city transit to JR. For walking directions, confirm both endpoints and adjust for your hotel's address and on-site access notices. Map estimates exclude waiting and visiting time.

Choose your style of sea bream rice

Look for meals in Okaido on your castle day and Dogo's shopping streets on your bath day. Leave time for lunch in Uchiko and Ozu. Check specific menus and prices before reserving.

Rice cooked with sea bream

Matsuyama City's official tourism guide describes sea bream and kombu placed over rice and cooked together. Start with this style if you want cooked fish and rice. Methods in northern Hojo and ingredients at individual restaurants may differ, so read the menu description alongside its photos.

The sashimi style

Matsuyama City's tourism guide says the style using sea bream sashimi is predominant in the south. If you want sashimi, check the menu's preparation method before ordering. Compare both styles and choose a restaurant in the area where you will be eating.

JR trips out of town and city tram costs

Course subtotals include only the listed facilities, JR unreserved-seat limited express journeys, and city trams. Budget separately for excluded items such as airport buses, meals, hotels, and house exhibitions.

Choose tram 3 or 5 by destination

From Okaido, choose Dogo-bound tram 3 for Dogo Onsen and tram 5 toward the JR station for JR Matsuyama Station. Tram 3's Matsuyama City Station is not the JR station. The checked adult city tram fare is ¥250 cash or ¥230 with a nationwide transit IC card per ride. Course subtotals show both payment options.
