Gunma travel: cultural sights or an onsen break?

Choose Takasaki for the large Kannon statue, former silk mill, and history and art exhibitions. Choose Kusatsu for yumomi performances and relaxing baths. Takasaki itineraries leave Tokyo Station by ordinary train; Kusatsu itineraries leave Busta Shinjuku by direct bus. Compare each base separately by trip length.

Heritage, hands-on activities or onsen?

Choose Tomioka Silk Mill for historic industrial buildings and exhibits, or Shorinzan daruma painting for a hands-on activity. Stay in Takasaki to visit art and history exhibitions on separate days. For bathing and rest, compare Kusatsu's performance and three bathing facilities separately. The statue interior and daruma workshop involve stairs, so check access.

Daily itineraries

See the Takasaki itineraries for the former factory, history and art displays, and daruma painting. Choose Kusatsu for yumomi performances and bathing. The main itineraries do not move between both bases. Choose your stay length around the facilities you want and your train or direct bus departure.

2 days / 1 night

Visit Byakue Dai-Kannon and Tomioka Silk Mill on separate days from Takasaki, or enjoy a performance and one open-air bath in Kusatsu. Sightseeing fits between arrival on day one and departure on day two, so choose return train or direct bus times before adding facilities.

3 days / 2 nights

The Takasaki cultural itinerary gives the history and modern art museums a day each, while the Kusatsu itinerary adds a day at Gozanoyu's indoor baths. Compare museum closure days or the facilities at each bath before choosing.

4 days / 3 nights

In Takasaki, add a daruma painting day between exhibitions. In Kusatsu, visit the three baths on separate days. Check workshop bookings, stairs and three-bath ticket coverage separately.

5 days / 4 nights

Stay in Takasaki to add the city art museum and Former Inoue Residence, or add animal observation at Kusatsu Nettaiken between bathing days. Choose a return journey you can catch after the final visit or bath.

What to choose before travelling

Choose between Takasaki culture and Kusatsu onsen

In Takasaki, visit Byakue Dai-Kannon and exhibitions, with a separate day for Tomioka Silk Mill by Joshin Railway. In Kusatsu, walk around Yubatake, watch a yumomi performance or relax at a bath. For a short trip, stay in the area with the facilities you most want to visit rather than travelling between both.

Plan your departure station and return bus first

For Takasaki's museums, take an ordinary train from Tokyo Station to Takasaki, then change to a city bus. For Kusatsu, take a direct bus from Busta Shinjuku, checking both journeys, seats and fares for your dates. The winter open-air bath opens at 9 am; if that does not fit a 10 am hotel check-out, bathe the previous day. To move from Kusatsu to Ikaho, check the actual bus–JR–bus connections and hotel arrival separately. These itineraries do not travel between the two onsen towns.

Rail passes and the three-bath ticket cover different things

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers rail travel for three consecutive days. It includes Joshin Railway but does not bundle facility admission, activities or Gururin buses. One pass cannot cover a trip arriving from Tokyo on day one and returning on day five. Kusatsu's JPY 2,100 three-bath ticket covers one visit to each of the three baths, with no expiry date. Compare it with the JPY 2,900 individual total if visiting all three. These budgets use individual tickets; the discount has not already been deducted.

Plan meals around baths and use cameras for outdoor views

On Takasaki sightseeing days, choose meal stops between the station and your destinations. The accommodation example Yubatake Souan does not serve dinner, so check opening days and last orders at restaurants around Yubatake. Gozanoyu has no restaurant, so plan meals around Yubatake separately. The Yutaki-facing Yubatake camera shows one direction around the square, not every street, hotel or bath interior. Check the image time alongside actual facility operating information.

How should I compare rail passes and the three-bath ticket?

Each itinerary budget adds the checked transport and admission costs for individual tickets. If using a pass or three-bath ticket, replace the covered rail fares or bath fees with the pass price. Do not add daruma painting or lockers again when they are already included. Calculate accommodation, meals, towels and extra activities separately.
