Gunma: Cultural Heritage or a Hot-Spring Stay?
Choose Takasaki for the large Kannon statue, historic silk factory, and history and art exhibits. Choose Kusatsu for yumomi performances and time at hot springs. Takasaki itineraries start by regular train from Tokyo Station; Kusatsu itineraries use a direct bus from Busta Shinjuku. Compare each base's trips by length.
Cultural Sights, Activities, or Hot Springs?
Choose Tomioka Silk Mill for historic industrial buildings and exhibits, or Shorinzan's daruma painting for a hands-on activity. Use Takasaki as a base for separate history and art museum visits. For bathing and rest, distinguish Kusatsu's performance from its three bathing facilities. Check access too: the statue interior and daruma workshop involve stairs.
Daily Itineraries
Choose Takasaki for the historic factory, history and art exhibits, and daruma painting. Choose Kusatsu for yumomi performances and bathing. The basic itineraries do not travel between both bases. Match your length of stay to your chosen facilities and outbound train or direct bus.
2 days, 1 night
Visit the Byakui Daikannon and Tomioka Silk Mill on separate days from Takasaki, or enjoy a performance and one outdoor bath in Kusatsu. Sightseeing falls after arrival on day 1 and before return on day 2, so match round-trip train or direct-bus times before adding facilities.
3 days, 2 nights
Takasaki's cultural itinerary gives the history and modern art museums separate days; Kusatsu adds a day at Gozanoyu's indoor baths. Compare museum closure calendars or bathing facilities' amenities.
4 days, 3 nights
In Takasaki, add a day for daruma painting between exhibitions. In Kusatsu, visit the three baths on different days. Check activity reservations and stairs, and the three-bath ticket's coverage separately.
5 days, 4 nights
Stay in Takasaki to add the city art museum and Former Inoue Residence, or in Kusatsu to add a day of animal viewing at Tropical Wonderland between baths. Choose your return service around the final visit or bath.
Where to Stay
Takasaki · 高崎
Stay near Takasaki Station for separate days at Kannonyama, Tomioka, and Gunma-no-Mori's cultural facilities. Example lodging Hotel Metropolitan Takasaki connects to the station, with 3:00 p.m. check-in, 11:00 a.m. checkout, and luggage storage before and after. Check storage conditions at your booked hotel.

Kusatsu · 草津
Look around Yubatake for a base that lets you enjoy yumomi performances and bathing facilities on different days. Rest at your hotel between square walks, performances, and meals. Example lodging Yubatake Souan is about a five-minute walk from the bus terminal. Check meal inclusions and conditions at your chosen hotel.

Before You Travel
Choose Takasaki Culture or Kusatsu Hot Springs
In Takasaki, visit the Byakui Daikannon and exhibitions, with a separate day for Joshin Railway to Tomioka Silk Mill. In Kusatsu, walk Yubatake, see a yumomi performance, or relax at bathing facilities. For a short stay, choose a base near the facilities you want rather than traveling between both areas.

Match Your Departure Station and Return Bus First
For Takasaki's museums, take a regular train from Tokyo Station to Takasaki Station, then a city bus. For Kusatsu, take a direct bus from Busta Shinjuku. Check round-trip services, seats, and fares for your date. Winter outdoor-bath opening is 9:00 a.m.; if that conflicts with a 10:00 a.m. hotel checkout, bathe the previous day. Changing hotels from Kusatsu to Ikaho requires a separate check of actual bus–JR–bus connections and hotel arrival. The current itineraries do not travel between the two hot-spring towns.

Rail Passes and the Three-Bath Ticket Cover Different Things
The JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers three consecutive days of rail travel, including Joshin Railway. It does not bundle all admission, activities, and Gururin buses. Do not apply one pass to an entire trip arriving from Tokyo on day 1 and returning on day 5. The Kusatsu three-bath ticket costs ¥2,100 for one bath at each of three facilities, with no expiry date. Compare it with ¥2,900 in individual admission when visiting all three. Itinerary budgets use individual tickets; the discount has not already been deducted.

Plan Meals Around Bathing and Use Cameras for Exterior Views
On Takasaki sightseeing days, choose meals between the station and your destination. Example lodging Yubatake Souan does not serve dinner, so check Yubatake restaurants' opening days and last orders. Gozanoyu has no restaurant, requiring separate meals around Yubatake. The Yutaki-side camera shows one direction around the square, rather than all streets, hotels, or bathing interiors. Check image time alongside actual facility notices.

Separate Routes for Takasaki, Tomioka, and Kusatsu
Takasaki city buses, Joshin Railway to Tomioka, and walks around Kusatsu are different journeys. Even within one prefecture, distinguish the departure base and return transportation.
| Area or destination | Departure and route | Return checks |
|---|---|---|
| Takasaki | Use the station as a base and choose separate buses for Kannonyama, Shorinzan, and Gunma-no-Mori. The history and modern art museums are separate buildings in Gunma-no-Mori. | Check Gururin route numbers, boarding points, and service days for each destination. Check each museum's closures separately. |
| Tomioka · 富岡 | Take Joshin Railway from Takasaki to Joshu-Tomioka, then walk about 15 minutes to the mill. The listed train journey is about 40 minutes. | After viewing, return to the same station for a Takasaki-bound train. Leave time to connect to a Tokyo-bound JR train. |
| Kusatsu | Official guidance gives about five minutes on foot from the bus terminal to Netsunoyu in front of Yubatake. Check each bath's walking route from Yubatake. | Allow time to walk back from the outdoor bath to the terminal. For your Shinjuku direct bus, check the departure point for your reserved date and service. |

Takasaki Pasta and Kusatsu Onsen Manju
Choose Gunma flour-based dishes and local snacks around the place you stay that day. Menus, prices, and opening days vary by business.
Takasaki pasta
Official tourism guidance describes Takasaki as a city with many pasta restaurants. Compare rich meat sauces, seafood sauces, and other specialties for lunch or dinner on a Takasaki sightseeing day. Check the location and route back to the station too.
Gunma official tourism: Takasaki pasta, Tomioka skewers, and Kusatsu manju
Tomioka horumon-age
Despite the name, this snack is breaded, skewered, deep-fried chikuwa fish cake rather than offal. Look for it on your silk-mill day, checking availability and choosing your meal location separately.
Gunma official tourism: Takasaki pasta, Tomioka skewers, and Kusatsu manju
Kusatsu onsen manju
Onsen manju around Yubatake is described as a steamed snack with brown sugar and red-bean filling. Match shop hours to bathing plans. Arrange lunch and dinner separately even if you have manju as a snack.

Okkirikomi and yakimanju
Okkirikomi is a Gunma dish of wide wheat noodles and vegetables cooked in soy-sauce or miso broth. Yakimanju is a skewered bun snack grilled with a sweet miso sauce. Check whether your chosen shop serves these dishes.
Comparing Rail Passes and the Three-Bath Ticket
Each itinerary's reference budget adds checked transportation and admission using individual tickets. With a pass or three-bath ticket, replace the covered rail fares or bath admission with its price. Do not add daruma activity and locker fees again when they are already in the total. Budget lodging, meals, towels, and extra activities separately.
| Ticket or cost | Checked amount and conditions | Additional checks |
|---|---|---|
| JR TOKYO Wide Pass | Adults ¥16,000, three consecutive days; Joshin Railway included. | Gururin buses, Shinjuku direct buses, JR buses, admission, and daruma painting are separate. One pass cannot cover all five days. |
| Kusatsu three-bath ticket | Adults ¥2,100; one bath each at Gozanoyu, Otakinoyu, and Sainokawara, with no expiry date. | Sold at bathing facilities. Performances, lodging, meals, towels, and paid lockers are excluded. |
| Individual admission to three baths | Gozanoyu ¥900 + Otakinoyu ¥1,200 + Sainokawara ¥800 = ¥2,900 per adult. | Compare with the three-bath ticket when visiting all three. For a short trip with one bath, compare individual tickets first. |
| Museum admission | Check exhibition dates and ticket coverage on each attraction card. | Recalculate using the applicable exhibition fee when dates change. The itinerary's check date does not make these permanent admission prices. |
