Gunma: explore cultural heritage or relax in hot springs?

Choose Takasaki for the large Kannon statue, old silk factory, history and art; choose Kusatsu for yumomi and hot-spring rest. Takasaki trips start by ordinary train from Tokyo Station, while Kusatsu trips start by direct bus from Busta Shinjuku. Compare each base separately by trip length.

Cultural heritage, making something or hot springs?

Choose Tomioka Silk Mill for industrial buildings and displays, or Shorinzan daruma painting for a hands-on activity. Divide history and art over separate days from Takasaki. In Kusatsu, choose performances and the three bathing facilities separately for bathing and rest. The statue interior and daruma venue involve stairs; check access too.

Day-by-day itineraries

Choose Takasaki for the old factory, history, art and daruma painting; choose Kusatsu for yumomi and bathing. Base routes do not travel between both areas. Choose your stay around the facilities you want and train or direct-bus departures.

1 night, 2 days

Give Takasaki’s Byakue Dai-Kannon and Tomioka Silk Mill separate days, or enjoy yumomi and one outdoor bath in Kusatsu. Visits fit between first-day arrival and second-day departure, so choose return trains or buses before adding facilities.

2 nights, 3 days

On the Takasaki cultural route, give the history and modern art museums a day each; in Kusatsu, add a day for indoor bathing at Gozanoyu. Compare the two museums’ closures or each bath’s facilities.

3 nights, 4 days

In Takasaki, add a daruma-painting day between exhibitions; in Kusatsu, visit the three baths on separate days. Check activity reservations, stair access and three-bath-ticket coverage separately.

4 nights, 5 days

Add the city museum and former Inoue residence while staying in Takasaki, or spend a day observing animals at Nettaiken between Kusatsu baths. Choose return services that leave time after your final-day visit or bath.

Where should you stay?

Takasaki · 高崎

Stay near Takasaki Station to give Kannonyama, Tomioka and Gunma-no-Mori’s cultural facilities separate days. The example hotel, Hotel Metropolitan Takasaki, connects to the station and lists 15:00 check-in, 11:00 check-out and luggage storage before and after your stay. Confirm storage conditions with your booked hotel.

Kusatsu · 草津

Look around Yubatake for a hotel base to enjoy yumomi and baths on separate days. Rest at your hotel between square walks, performances and meals. Yubatake Souan is one example, about five minutes’ walk from the bus terminal. Confirm meals and other conditions with the hotel you book.

Choose before travelling

Choose Takasaki cultural visits or Kusatsu hot springs

From Takasaki, explore Byakue Dai-Kannon and exhibitions, with a separate Joshin Railway day to Tomioka Silk Mill. In Kusatsu, walk around Yubatake, watch yumomi or rest at bathing facilities. On a short trip, stay in the area with the facilities you want rather than travelling between both.

Match train departure stations and return buses first

For Takasaki museums, take an ordinary train from Tokyo Station to Takasaki, then a city bus. For Kusatsu, take a direct bus from Busta Shinjuku, checking date-specific outward and return services, seats and fares together. Winter outdoor bathing starts at 09:00; if this conflicts with a 10:00 hotel check-out, bathe the previous day. Moving from Kusatsu to Ikaho requires separate checks of bus–JR–bus connections and hotel arrival. Current routes do not link both hot-spring towns.

Rail passes and three-bath tickets cover different things

The Tokyo Wide Pass covers rail travel for three consecutive days, including Joshin Railway; it does not include attractions, activities and Gururin buses. One pass cannot cover both the first-day journey from Tokyo and the fifth-day return. Kusatsu’s JPY 2,100 three-bath ticket gives one visit per facility without expiry. Compare it with JPY 2,900 in individual fees when using all three. Route budgets retain individual tickets, so their totals have no three-bath discount deducted.

Plan meals around bathing and use cameras for exterior views

On Takasaki visiting days, choose meals between the station and facilities. Example hotel Yubatake Souan provides no dinner; check Yubatake restaurant opening dates and last orders. Gozanoyu has no restaurant, so arrange food around Yubatake separately. The Yutaki-side camera shows one direction around the square, excluding all streets, hotels and bath interiors. Check image time alongside actual facility operating guidance.

Explore Takasaki pasta and Kusatsu onsen manju

Choose Gunma wheat dishes and local snacks near where you stay that day. Menus, prices and opening dates vary by shop.

Takasaki pasta

Official tourism guidance introduces Takasaki as a city with many pasta restaurants. Compare individual styles, such as thick meat or seafood sauces, for lunch or dinner on visiting days. Check locations and the route back to your station too.

Tomioka horumon-age

Despite its name, this local snack is breaded, skewered and fried chikuwa fish cake rather than offal. Look for it on a mill-visiting day, checking individual availability and choosing somewhere to eat separately.

Kusatsu onsen manju

Onsen manju around Yubatake is described as a steamed snack with brown sugar and red-bean filling. Match shop hours to bathing visits. Plan lunch and dinner separately even when having manju as a snack.

How should I compare rail passes and three-bath tickets?

Each route adds the supplied individual transport and admission rates to give a reference budget. With a pass or combined bath ticket, replace covered fares or bath fees with the ticket price. Do not add daruma activities or lockers already in the subtotal again. Accommodation, meals, towels and extra activities cost extra.
