Toyama travel: where to start?
For a first visit, stay near Toyama Station and start with the city. Travel via Takaoka to Amaharashi for the coast, or via Tateyama to Murodo for the mountains. Give Gokayama a separate day for its gassho-style village. For a short stay, choose between the mountains and village.
Park, coast, mountains or village: where to start?
Walk beside Kansui Park's canal and continue to the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design. The park walk is free; art and design exhibitions are paid. To combine them, plan your exhibit visit first and fit the walk around it. With another day, choose Zuiryuji and Amaharashi in Takaoka, Murodo via Tateyama, or Suganuma in Gokayama. Attraction guides give highlights, departure stations, prices and operating conditions.
Itineraries by trip length
Stay near Toyama Station and visit the park and museum, coast, mountains and village on different days. Check Murodo's operating season and return transport. An overnight Gokayama option is available in the five-day itinerary.
2 days / 1 night
Choose leisurely walks around the park and museum north of the station, or a second-day trip to Zuiryuji and Amaharashi in Takaoka. Both include one night in Toyama.
3 days / 2 nights
Add a Murodo mountain trip or Suganuma village visit between your Toyama walk and museum day. Both use a Toyama base; choose the middle day around mountain operations or the World Heritage Bus timetable.
4 days / 3 nights
Combine Murodo and the coast, or Suganuma and the coast. Keep your accommodation in Toyama and visit destinations in different directions on separate days.
5 days / 4 nights
Choose return day trips from Toyama to Murodo, Suganuma and the coast, or a night in Gokayama. The village stay uses two nights in Toyama, one in Gokayama and one back in Toyama. Match your accommodation address with its bus stop first.
Where to stay
Around Toyama Station
Stay near Toyama Station for the city museum and rail day trips. The area within walking distance north of the station is convenient for the park and museum; mountain-bound local trains leave from Dentetsu-Toyama Station.
Hotel JAL City Toyama · ホテルJALシティ富山
Consider Hotel JAL City Toyama if you want accommodation south of the station. It is about three minutes on foot from the JR station's south side. You can use these itineraries with other accommodation.

Around Takaoka Station
You can stay near Takaoka Station for Zuiryuji Temple and Amaharashi. Takaoka and Shin-Takaoka, where the Shinkansen stops, are different stations. Check which is closest to your booked accommodation.
Tateyama area
Consider accommodation around Tateyama if Murodo is your priority. First check how to reach your first connection from the property and whether it offers pick-up.
Stay in Gokayama
Stay a night in Gokayama to spend more time in a gassho-style village. Check your accommodation's bus stop, meals, transfers and last bus.
Gassho no Sato Cottage · 合掌造りコテージ 合掌の里
Consider Gassho no Sato Cottage for a self-catering stay in a detached cottage. It is about one minute from Gassho no Sato (合掌の里) bus stop and about 800 m from Suganuma village. Depending on the cottage, maximum occupancy is 10, 15 or 16 people. The official reference price is JPY 50,600 per cottage for up to five guests. Check travel-date availability, prices and meal preparation arrangements before booking. If you choose another property, use the stop appropriate to its address.

Before booking and travelling
Check timetables and closures for your travel dates
Mountain transport to Murodo has seasonal operating periods and timetables. The operator's planned 2026 season is 15 April–30 November; check separate November timetables and WEB ticket sales conditions. Start with new operating notices for the next season. Reservations use the Tateyama Station cable car departure time; check remaining seats on the booking site. Check travel-day services, suspensions and return connections separately for Ainokaze, the JR Himi Line and World Heritage Bus. Check museum closures, winter rooftop closure and seasonal temple closing for your visit date. Standard adult museum collection admission is JPY 350 and the standard adult Murodo return fare is JPY 10,220. Check available dates separately from prices.

Distinguish your hotel from the mountain departure station
The city park and museum are north of Toyama Station. Check the route from your accommodation's address to the station. Mountain-bound local trains leave from Dentetsu-Toyama, rather than JR platforms.

Compare whether your journeys need the Hokuriku pass
Ordinary return rail fares for a Takaoka and Amaharashi day trip total JPY 1,260. Including JPY 780 for Toyama–Takaoka trains on the Gokayama day gives JPY 2,040. There is no need to buy the JPY 7,000 adult four-day Hokuriku pass for these short rail trips alone. If using JR to reach Toyama or travel to other regions, compare the actual covered sections and fares together. Ainokaze coverage requires travel between the two stations without getting off at other stations. A passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor status are also required.

What food should I choose in Toyama?
For local food, consider masuzushi (ます寿し), made with trout and rice. The official tourism body describes Toyama Bay sushi as a menu using Toyama-grown rice and seasonal fish caught in Toyama Bay. Choose a restaurant through the Toyama food and restaurant guide below, then check its opening hours, daily menu and reservation conditions. Meals are outside itinerary partial totals.

Takaoka · 高岡 Zuiryuji Temple · 瑞龍寺 Amaharashi Coast · 雨晴海岸
After Zuiryuji in Takaoka, take the JR Himi Line from Takaoka Station to Amaharashi Coast. Walk to the temple from the station's south side; the coast requires another train. Check both return rail sections to Toyama first, then allow time for meals and a coastal walk. Weather may hide the mountains across the sea.

Via Tateyama to Murodo: a mountain day
Murodo · 室堂
Take a local train from Dentetsu-Toyama, then change to the cable car at Tateyama and highland bus at Bijodaira. For a return trip from Toyama, allow time to explore the mountains and connect through to the return local train. Choose your day after checking cable car reservation times and the operating season. Visit Suganuma on another day, as its World Heritage Bus requires travel towards Takaoka instead.
