Where should you start in Toyama?

For a first Toyama trip, stay near Toyama Station and start with city sights. Reach Amaharashi’s coast via Takaoka, or Murodo’s mountains via Tateyama. Give a separate day to Gokayama for the gassho-style village. For a short stay, choose mountains or village.

Park, coast, mountains or village: where should you start?

Follow a canal walk in Kansui Park with the Toyama art museum. Park walking is free; art and design exhibits require paid admission. To visit both together, set exhibition time first, then fit walking before or after. With another day, choose Takaoka’s Zuiryuji and Amaharashi Coast, Murodo in Tateyama or Suganuma village in Gokayama. Attraction guides explain what to see, departure stations, fees and operating conditions.

Day-by-day itineraries

Stay near Toyama Station and visit the park and museum, coast, mountains and village on separate days. Check Murodo’s season and return transport. The five-day guide offers a separate itinerary with one night in Gokayama.

1 night, 2 days

Choose leisurely park and museum walks north of the station, or a day-two trip to Takaoka’s Zuiryuji and Amaharashi Coast. Stay one night in Toyama.

2 nights, 3 days

Fit a mountain day at Murodo or a Suganuma village visit between Toyama walks. Both routes keep a Toyama base; choose the middle day according to mountain operating dates or World Heritage Bus timetables.

3 nights, 4 days

Combine Murodo with the coast, or Suganuma with the coast. Stay in Toyama and visit the destinations in different directions on separate days.

4 nights, 5 days

Choose return trips to Murodo, Suganuma and the coast from Toyama, or an overnight Gokayama stay. The village stay uses two nights in Toyama, one in Gokayama and one back in Toyama. Match accommodation addresses and bus stops first.

Before booking and travelling

Check timetables and closing days for your travel dates

Murodo mountain transport seasons and timetables vary. The operator’s planned 2026 season is 15 April–30 November; for November, check its separate timetable and WEB ticket sales conditions. For the next season, start with the new operating notice. The reserved time is the Tateyama cable car departure; check available seats on the booking site. Look up Ainokaze, JR Himi Line and World Heritage Bus services, suspensions and return connections separately for your date. Check museum closures, winter rooftop closure and seasonal temple deadlines too. General adult museum collection admission is JPY 350; general adult Murodo return transport is JPY 10,220. Check available dates separately from prices.

Compare ordinary rail fares with the Hokuriku Area Pass

Ordinary return rail travel for the Takaoka and Amaharashi day trip totals JPY 1,260. With JPY 780 for the Toyama–Takaoka return on the Gokayama day, it totals JPY 2,040. There is no need to buy the adult JPY 7,000 four-day Hokuriku Area Pass solely for these nearby trains. If using JR to reach Toyama or travel elsewhere, compare actual covered sections and fares together. Ainokaze coverage requires travelling the full section between the two stations without alighting elsewhere. A passport issued by a government outside Japan and Temporary Visitor status are also required.
