Toyama travel: where should you start?

For a first visit, stay near Toyama Station and start with the city. Reach Amaharashi Coast via Takaoka, or Murodo via Tateyama. Set aside a separate day for Gokayama if you want to see gassho-style villages. On a short trip, choose between the mountains and the village.

Where to start: park, coast, mountains, or village?

Walk beside the canal in Kansui Park, then continue to the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design. The park walk is free; the art and design exhibitions charge admission. If you visit both on the same day, schedule your exhibition visit and fit the walk around it. With another day available, choose Zuiryuji Temple and Amaharashi Coast in Takaoka, Murodo in Tateyama, or Suganuma Gassho Village in Gokayama. The attraction guide covers what to see, departure stations, prices, and operating conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

Stay near Toyama Station and visit the park and museum, coast, mountains, and village on separate days. Check Murodo's transport season and return connections. A night in Gokayama is a separate option in the final five-day itinerary.

2 days, 1 night

Choose a relaxed walk around the park and museum north of the station, or visit Zuiryuji Temple in Takaoka and Amaharashi Coast on day two. Both options include one night in Toyama.

3 days, 2 nights

Add one day at Murodo or Suganuma Gassho Village between walks in Toyama. Both itineraries keep your lodging in Toyama. Plan the middle day around the mountain transport season or World Heritage Bus timetable.

4 days, 3 nights

Combine Murodo with the coast, or Suganuma Gassho Village with the coast. Keep your lodging in Toyama and give destinations in different directions their own day trips.

5 days, 4 nights

Choose day trips to Murodo, Suganuma, and the coast from the same Toyama base, or spend one night in Gokayama. The village overnight itinerary has two nights in Toyama, one in Gokayama, then one in Toyama. Match the lodging address to the bus stop first.

Where should you stay?

Near Toyama Station

Stay near Toyama Station for city art museums and rail day trips. The walkable area north of the station is convenient for the park and museum; mountain-bound local railway services leave from Dentetsu-Toyama Station.

Hotel JAL City Toyama · ホテルJALシティ富山

For accommodation south of the station, consider Hotel JAL City Toyama, about a three-minute walk from JR Toyama Station's south side. The itineraries below also work with other lodging.

A night in Gokayama

For more time in a gassho-style village, spend a night in Gokayama. Check the stop serving your booked lodging, meals, shuttles, and the last bus.

Gassho no Sato Cottage · 合掌造りコテージ 合掌の里

Consider Gassho no Sato Cottage for a separate cottage with self-catered meals. It is about one minute from the Gassho no Sato · 合掌の里 stop and about 800 meters from Suganuma village. Depending on the cottage, capacity is up to 10, 15, or 16 guests. Official guidance lists a reference price of ¥50,600 per cottage for up to five guests. Check availability, prices for your dates, and meal preparation arrangements before booking. For other lodging, use the stop appropriate to its address.

Match timetables and closure dates to your trip

Mountain transportation to Murodo changes its operating period and timetable by season. The operator's planned 2026 season is April 15–November 30. In November, check the separate timetable and WEB ticket sales conditions. For a later season, start with the new operating notice. Reservations use the cable-car departure time from Tateyama Station; check remaining seats on the booking site. Check date-specific services, suspensions, and return connections separately for Ainokaze, the JR Himi Line, and the World Heritage Bus. Match your date to museum closures, the winter rooftop closure, and seasonal temple closing times. Regular museum collection admission is ¥350 for adults; the standard adult Murodo round trip is ¥10,220. Check available dates separately from fares.

Distinguish your hotel from the mountain departure station

The city park and museum are north of Toyama Station. Check the walk between your lodging address and the station. The local railway for the mountain journey departs from Dentetsu-Toyama, not the JR platforms.

Compare your journeys before buying a Hokuriku Area Pass

Ordinary round-trip rail fares for Takaoka and Amaharashi total ¥1,260. With another ¥780 Toyama–Takaoka round trip on the Gokayama day, the total is ¥2,040. There is no need to buy the ¥7,000 adult four-day Hokuriku Area Pass solely for these nearby rail journeys. If also taking JR to Toyama or another region, compare actual covered sections and fares together. Ainokaze coverage requires travel over the entire section between the two designated stations without getting off at other stations. Eligibility also requires a passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor status.

What should I eat in Toyama?

For a regional specialty, consider masuzushi · ます寿し, made with trout and rice. Official tourism guidance describes Toyama Bay sushi as using Toyama Prefecture's rice and seasonal fish caught in Toyama Bay. Choose a restaurant from the Toyama food guide below, then check opening hours, that day's menu, and reservation conditions. Meals are excluded from itinerary subtotals.

Which sights can you combine in one day?

Toyama Prefecture · 富山県

Walk to the park and museum north of Toyama Station, then choose the coast, mountains, or village for another day. Takaoka, Tateyama, and Gokayama are separate destinations rather than neighborhoods in Toyama City, with different departure stations and transport.

Fugan Canal Kansui Park · 富岩運河環水公園 Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design · 富山県美術館

Both sights are north of the station. Choose the park for an outdoor walk or the museum for indoor exhibitions. If you visit both on the same day, schedule your exhibition visit first and fit the walk around it. Two-day itinerary A puts the park on the first day and the museum on the last.

What can you check on camera before visiting Murodo?

Official Murododaira camera

Murodo · 室堂平

Open the Alpine Route operator's camera for a view of Murododaira in the mountains. Check the image date and time first, and distinguish a day-long time-lapse from current footage. The camera cannot tell you whether the cable car and highland bus are operating or how many ticket seats remain. Before leaving, check the operator's service notices and booking page separately.
