Walk and relax by the water without traveling far from Toyama Station. Look over the canal and Tenmon Bridge or rest near the lawns. The park is about a nine-minute walk from the north exit, and walking admission is free. Observation towers are open 9 a.m.–9:30 p.m.; cruises have separate charges and operating days.

Zuiryuji Temple · 瑞龍寺

Zuiryuji Temple瑞龍寺

At Zuiryuji Temple, you can see the National Treasure Sanmon gate, Butsuden hall, and Hatto hall up close, along with the corridors connecting the buildings. It is a worthwhile stop in Takaoka if you enjoy historic Japanese temple architecture. Regular adult admission is ¥500. Enter at least 30 minutes before closing, and allow for an earlier closing time in winter.

Amaharashi Coast雨晴海岸

Walk along Amaharashi Coast or take photos of the sea and rocky islands. In clear weather with good visibility, you may also see the Tateyama mountain range across the water, though the mountains are not always visible. Walking along the coast is free, and the shore is about five minutes from Amaharashi Station. Check your return train on the Himi Line before deciding how long to stay.

  • JR Himi Line: outbound and returnFrom Takaoka Station, take a JR Himi Line train toward Himi and get off at Amaharashi Station. Official tourism guidance lists a five-minute walk to the coast. For the return trip, take a train toward Takaoka.
  • Views and the nearby rest stopWeather may obscure the Tateyama mountain range across the sea. Michino Eki Amaharashi is an adjacent rest stop, separate from the coast itself.

Murodo室堂

Set aside a day for Murodo if you want to leave the city for mountain scenery. The rooftop exit of Murodo Terminal leads onto Murododaira. From Dentetsu-Toyama Station, the journey involves a local train, cable car, and highland bus; the regular adult round-trip fare for returning by the same route is ¥10,220. Adjust your walk to mountain weather and local restrictions, and plan the entire return journey through the final local train.

  • Round-trip mountain transport fareEffective April 15, 2026, the regular adult round-trip fare is ¥10,220 for Dentetsu-Toyama–Tateyama–Bijodaira–Murodo, returning by the same route. This covers the railway, cable car, and highland bus, without continuing to Kurobe Dam or Ogizawa. Limited-service or reserved-seat supplements, meals, and lodging are extra.
  • Mountain transport season and timetablesThese dates describe mountain transport operations, rather than opening hours for the Murodo area. The operator's planned 2026 season is April 15–November 30. Timetables vary by season and between weekdays and weekends. Use the timetable for your travel date to select both the outbound journey and the return connections, including the local railway. Do not apply this route unchanged outside the operating season. Check the Snow Wall viewing period and weather-related service suspensions separately.
  • Getting to Murodo and returningFrom Dentetsu-Toyama Station, take a local railway train toward Tateyama to Tateyama Station. Ride the cable car to Bijodaira, then the highland bus to Murodo. Return in the order Murodo–Bijodaira–Tateyama–Dentetsu-Toyama.

  • What the WEB ticket departure time meansTo book a WEB ticket, register an account and choose the date, segment, one-way or round-trip journey, and departure time. On the Toyama side, the specified time is the departure from Tateyama Station, rather than the railway departure from Dentetsu-Toyama Station. During busy periods, guidance calls for arriving at the departure station 30 minutes early and collecting tickets at least 15 minutes before departure. Catching the last mountain connection alone does not ensure that you can reach downtown Toyama. Final mountain connections run earlier in November; choose your return journey first.

Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village菅沼合掌造り集落

Walk the lanes outside Suganuma's gassho-style houses to see the mountain village scenery. Residents live here, so do not enter homes without permission. Check individual opening hours and admission charges if you want to visit an indoor exhibition. The World Heritage Bus connects the village with Takaoka; bus fares and meals cost extra.

  • Visiting a residential villageThis is a residential village in Nanto. Distinguish residents' homes from exhibition buildings open to visitors, and do not enter private homes without permission.
  • Village visiting hoursOfficial tourism guidance lists 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. from April through November and 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. from December through March. The village is closed to visits on December 31 and January 1. Visit during daylight and avoid arriving after sunset. Check individual exhibition and restaurant hours separately.
  • World Heritage Bus and seat reservationsBoard the World Heritage Bus at stop 7 in front of Takaoka Station and get off at Suganuma (菅沼). For the return journey, use the stop toward Takaoka.   • Vehicle conservation contributions and extra costsThe conservation contribution is ¥1,000 for a standard passenger car or ¥300 for a motorcycle. This vehicle contribution is not an admission charge for visitors arriving by bus. Indoor exhibitions, meals, and bus fares cost extra.   • Gokayama two-day pass and reserved seatsThe Gokayama Free Pass costs ¥2,800 for adults and is valid for two days from the first day of use. It covers the World Heritage Bus between Takaoka Station Front or Shin-Takaoka Station and Sasara-kan-mae. It cannot be combined with a reserved-seat ticket and does not guarantee a seat. Toyama–Takaoka rail travel, lodging, indoor exhibitions, and meals are extra.
