Admission

The confirmed official guide does not list separate admission for Kusasenri’s grasslands themselves. Aso Volcano Museum costs ¥1,300 for junior-high students and older, ¥650 for elementary students, ¥1,100 for ages 65 and older, or ¥350 for preschool children aged 4 and older. Horse riding, meals and parking cost separately. Regional guide subtotals include only the bus fare to the grasslands.

Opening hours

Check access guidance for your date rather than fixed grassland opening hours. Volcanic activity, weather and restrictions can change accessible areas. Aso Volcano Museum opens 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m., and closes for inspection January 14 and July 14 each year. Horse riding and restaurants have their own hours.

How to get to Kusasenri

Take the JR Hohi Main Line to Aso Station. Trains from Kumamoto may require a change at Higo-Ozu. Change to Sanko Bus’s Aso mountain route, get off at Kusasenri Aso Volcano Museum-mae and walk to the grasslands. Check the stop name so you do not continue to Aso Sanjo Terminal.

Visiting tips

Keep your distance from grazing horses

Do not approach, touch or feed grazing horses. For horse riding, follow the separate activity facility’s instructions. Check daily access, weather and volcanic restrictions before entering the grasslands.

Allow for walks between the stop and grasslands and bus waits. For Kumamoto, check both the Kusasenri–Aso Station bus and JR departure from Aso.

Do I need to stay on the bus to Aso Sanjo Terminal for Kusasenri?

No. Get off at Kusasenri Aso Volcano Museum-mae and walk to the grasslands. Check the stop name rather than continuing to the terminal.
