Kumamoto travel: Where should I stay and what should I see?
Compare Torichosuji and Sakuramachi accommodation for the castle and city exhibits. Consider Kumamoto Station for JR trips to Aso. Give a grassland day trip its own day. For Aso or Kurokawa stays, choose your city return and final departure first.
Castle, garden and exhibits, or grasslands and hot springs?
Choose Kumamoto Castle for the keep and restoration, or Suizenji Jōjuen Garden for garden paths and the small Mount Fuji beside the pond. Explore local history and nature at the municipal museum, or works in ceiling lights and bookshelves at the contemporary art museum’s Home Gallery. Set aside separate Aso or Kurokawa days for more grassland or hot-spring time.
Itineraries by length of stay
Choose city days for the castle, garden and exhibits, an Aso trip by JR and bus, or a reserved bus to a Kurokawa stay. Aso JR, city trams and local buses are separate transport.
2 days, 1 night
Give the castle and garden a day each, or choose the museum and art museum. Compare both exhibit facilities’ closure days before Monday or Tuesday visits.
3 days, 2 nights
Give the castle, museum and garden a day each, or use the middle day for Aso’s grasslands. Change from JR to a Kusasenri-bound bus and return that day.
4 days, 3 nights
Compare three city nights with an Aso day trip against one Kurokawa night between city stays. For Fukuoka or Kagoshima connections, check conditions for replacing an existing sightseeing day.
5 days, 4 nights
Spend two nights in Aso for grassland time or two in Kurokawa for baths. Choose your city-return bus and final departure together.
Where should I stay?
Around Kumamoto Station
Consider Kumamoto Station for JR arrivals and trips to Aso. Reaching the castle and central shopping streets requires tram travel and walking, so compare it with a city sightseeing base. Check the walk from the station to your accommodation before booking.

What should I add to the displayed subtotals?
Each budget card includes admission, buses and the listed tram rides for one adult. Trams use ¥200 per ride without pass or payment discounts. Return JR to Aso is required paid travel: search fares for your actual date, train and seat and add them to the confirmed subtotal. Accommodation, meals, flights, travel to the starting point, paid accommodation access and luggage storage cost extra.
Return Aso bus fares and the daily ticket each cost ¥2,000; choose one without counting both. An adult bathing pass costs ¥1,500 for three facilities, valid six months from purchase, and cannot be shared. Across two days, check remaining entries and each bath’s daily admission.

How should I separate city trams and JR passes?
City trams cost ¥200 per ride for junior-high students and older or ¥100 for elementary students, effective June 1, 2025. Route A connects Kumamoto Station and Tasakibashi with Kengunmachi. Route B does not go directly to Kumamoto Station, so check the destination at Karashimacho.
JR between Kumamoto and Aso is covered by Northern, Southern and All Kyushu passes. The Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen section is covered by Northern and All Kyushu, excluding Southern Kyushu. Adult Northern Kyushu prices are ¥15,000 for three consecutive days or ¥17,000 for five. All Kyushu costs ¥22,000 for three days, ¥24,000 for five or ¥26,000 for seven; official online prices may differ. Northern Kyushu Shinkansen coverage runs Hakata–Kumamoto. Trams, Aso Sanko buses, Kurokawa Kyushu Odan buses, admission and bathing passes are excluded.
An Aso day trip alone does not establish that Northern Kyushu is cheaper. For other JR trips, such as Fukuoka, compare regular fares for your actual dates, trains and seats. The two-night Aso route travels outward on day three and returns on day five, so check a consecutive validity period covering both. Confirm foreign-passport, Temporary Visitor and reserved-seat conditions in official guidance. A pass does not guarantee bus seats or JR–bus connections.

Which services should I connect for an Aso return trip?
Take the JR Hohi Main Line from Kumamoto to Aso Station, then change to the Aso mountain bus outside. Check Higo-Ozu transfers for local trains and compare direct limited expresses. Use the JR search and both-direction Sanko timetable together to plan grassland time and your Kumamoto return. Search JR fares for your date, limited express and seat, then add them to the confirmed subtotal.
Outside Aso Station, take an Aso Sanjo Terminal-bound bus and get off at Kusasenri Aso Volcano Museum-mae. Return from the same-named stop’s Aso Station-bound boarding point. Seats are first-come within capacity, without reservations or guaranteed connections. Leave room for a later service rather than relying only on the last bus.
Aso Station–Kusasenri adult fares are ¥1,000 one-way or ¥2,000 return. The route’s daily ticket also costs ¥2,000, so a simple return trip receives no extra saving. The crater shuttle, JR and museum cost separately. Sanko Bus does not accept nationwide transport IC cards; check official payment guidance. Crater visits require separate restriction and additional transport checks from grassland visits.

How do I match the Kurokawa bus with ryokan arrival?
Take the Kyushu Odan Bus from bay 7 outside Kumamoto Station or bay 6 at Sakuramachi Bus Terminal to Kurokawa Onsen stop. Return from its Kumamoto-bound boarding point to Sakuramachi or outside Kumamoto Station. Choose departures for your date using the official both-direction timetable and reservation guide. Reservations run from two months before travel until the previous day.
Adult fares from outside Kumamoto Station or Sakuramachi to Kurokawa are ¥3,400 one-way or ¥6,800 return for the same section, excluding bathing and accommodation. Check whether you can walk to your ryokan or need pickup, then match arrival and dinner. For a city museum visit after returning, choose an early bus leaving time to visit before the 4:30 p.m. admission deadline.

Which areas should I visit while leaving time for meals?
Separate the castle, garden and exhibits as city sightseeing from Kusasenri and Kurokawa trips requiring travel time. For Amakusa to the west, plan transport and visiting places separately from this route.
For city dinners, compare restaurants near your Torichosuji or Sakuramachi accommodation. Choose Kumamoto ramen or basashi, then check hours and prices. On Aso or Kurokawa nights, checking whether dinner is included at your accommodation helps set your travel times.
What can I learn from the cameras?
Use cameras as a view of the scenery. Check official operating guidance for access, transport services, volcanic restrictions and facility opening rather than deciding these from video alone.
Check the broadcaster’s guide for the subject and video timing. Do not assume the view shows the castle entrance or grassland access path.
Compare Kumamoto and Kagoshima as alternative travel areas
Aso and Kurokawa in Kumamoto differ from Ibusuki and Kirishima in Kagoshima in purpose and transport. Compare Kumamoto’s three-night and four-night routes for grasslands or ryokan stays, or Kagoshima for sand baths, shrines and mountain accommodation. The links below compare accommodation and travel areas; they do not add both prefectures’ complete routes to the same dates.
Direct Kyushu Shinkansen services stop at both Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. From Torichosuji, Sakuramachi or Tenmonkan accommodation, first reach the relevant JR station, then continue by tram, bus or ferry after the Shinkansen. These trains do not run directly to Aso Station, Kurokawa, Ibusuki Station or Kirishima Jingu. Once your date is set, search same-day outward and return trains in the official timetable.
Northern Kyushu Shinkansen coverage ends at Kumamoto from Hakata. Compare designated Southern or All Kyushu coverage for Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo. Do not include city trams or buses, Aso Sanko buses, reserved Kurokawa buses, Sakurajima ferries or island buses, sand baths or rental cars in a JR pass budget. Search regular fares and limited-express charges for your actual date, train and seat, then compare pass price, eligibility and consecutive validity. Even for this section alone, first compare regular return fares.
Assess a day trip only after arranging both trains on the same date, station access, local travel, admission, sightseeing and return. For an overnight move, check the next day’s return or onward train and match accommodation access, check-in and dinner. For more sightseeing time, first consider one night in Kagoshima. Check JR service changes before leaving. The eight basic routes and displayed subtotals exclude intercity Shinkansen and additional accommodation.

Areas to give separate days and how to reach them
Use trams and walks for the castle, exhibits and garden, JR and local buses for Aso’s grasslands, or a reserved bus for Kurokawa. Decide whether to keep your city base or move to local accommodation, then match return services.
Castle area and Torichosuji
From Kumamoto Station, take route A towards Kengunmachi to Kumamotojo-Shiyakushomae, then walk. Follow your date’s castle entrance guidance and plan dinner around your Torichosuji accommodation.

Choose a ramen meal and local dishes separately
Kumamoto ramen gains flavour from garlic oil or garlic chips. Basashi is thinly sliced horse meat, while taipien uses glass noodles. Choose a city menu, then compare restaurant locations with your Torichosuji or Sakuramachi accommodation. For Aso or Kurokawa dinners, check included meals and arrival deadlines first.
How should I separate passes and trip costs?
Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen is covered by Northern and All Kyushu, excluding Southern Kyushu. JR Kumamoto–Aso is covered by all three. Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo uses Southern or All Kyushu coverage, beyond Northern coverage. Trams, Aso buses, reserved Kurokawa buses, accommodation and baths cost separately. You can also buy regular tickets only for needed sections. Check official eligibility and reserved-seat conditions and compare other JR riding days.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add Aso and Kurokawa to the same city sightseeing day?
Give the Aso day trip and Kurokawa stay different days. Aso requires a JR–Kusasenri bus change; Kurokawa requires a reserved bus and ryokan access. Visiting both in one day requires checking time in each area and return services first.
