Gion Matsuri

祇園祭

Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri brings elaborately decorated yamahoko floats into the city streets. Yoiyama evenings let you see the parked floats and hear festival music; the daytime processions offer a different experience.

Gion Matsuri dates

Usually July 1–31; major float processions on July 17 and 24

Planning your visit

Choose Yoiyama for close views of decoration, or a procession for the large floats turning corners. Do not assume every festival activity takes place at Yasaka Shrine.

History and traditions

The festival traces its origin to a ritual held in 869 to quell an epidemic. Neighborhoods developed and maintained the float traditions.
