Fukui: where should you stay and what should you see?
See large dinosaur skeletons and fossils at the dinosaur museum, or temple buildings linked by corridors at Eiheiji. Explore excavated objects in Ichijodani’s museum or walk its reconstructed houses and streets. Stay near Fukui Station for separate day trips. Add accommodation near Awara-Yunomachi for Tojinbo’s rocky coast and hot spring rest. Plan around museum entry slots and closures, coastal buses and reconstructed-street shuttle operating days.
Dinosaur exhibits, temple or coast?
Choose the dinosaur museum for large skeletons and fossils or Eiheiji for a slower walk along temple corridors. For former castle-town life, explore excavated objects and reconstructed displays at the Ichijodani museum, then travel to reconstructed streets among samurai residences and artisans’ houses. Choose Tojinbo for rocky cliffs and sea views. You can also move to Awara hot spring accommodation after the coast.
Itineraries by trip length
Visit museums, temple and archaeological sites on separate days from Fukui Station, or move to Awara after Tojinbo for hot spring rest. Dinosaur museum entry slots and reconstructed-street shuttle days affect your route choice.
2 days, 1 night
Arrive on the first morning for the Eiheiji Liner, visit the temple and spend one night in Fukui. On day 2, choose the dinosaur museum or Ichijodani site museum. Allow time after sightseeing for your next departure.
3 days, 2 nights
Spend two nights in Fukui, visiting Eiheiji and the site museum on different days. Add the dinosaur museum for dinosaur exhibits or Tojinbo for coastal walking. Choose dates around museum reservations and coastal bus operation.
4 days, 3 nights
Spend three nights in Fukui to visit both museums, temple and reconstructed streets without moving accommodation. Match the final street visit to the free weekend shuttle. For hot spring rest, spend one night in Fukui, then travel via Tojinbo for two nights in Awara.
5 days, 4 nights
Four Fukui nights allow separate days for both museums, temple, coast and reconstructed streets. For a hot spring rest day, divide your stay into one Fukui night, two hot spring nights and one more Fukui night. Compare the time available after your final-day museum return before long-distance departure.

What is Echizen soba?
A representative serving is oroshi soba: cooked, cooled buckwheat noodles with cold broth, grated daikon, bonito flakes and green onion. Look for it on menus if you want noodles with grated daikon. Flavour varies with the daikon and serving style.
On dinosaur museum days, leave time for lunch between exhibits and before your return bus. After Eiheiji, choose an open restaurant near the temple. Check dinner time if meals are included in hot spring accommodation. Food costs are excluded from the transport and admission subtotals below.
