Fukushima: where should you stay in Aizu?
Choose Aizu-Wakamatsu for a red-tiled castle and samurai homes. Explore the pond and medicinal-plant garden and Nanukamachi’s old buildings and shops in the city. Look near the station for train trips to Ouchi-juku or Kitakata, or near a loop-bus stop for city sightseeing. Yunokami Onsen stays require separate station-to-accommodation routes and next-day travel plans.
Castle exhibits, garden or historic streets first?
See red tiles and history exhibits at Tsuruga Castle or pond and medicinal plants at Oyakuen. Explore reconstructed samurai domestic spaces at the residence or old buildings and shops in Nanukamachi. Adding Kitakata ramen or Ouchi-juku requires trains and regional buses separate from city loop buses.
Itineraries by trip length
All eight basic routes return to the same Aizu-Wakamatsu accommodation. Choose city-only sightseeing or a day for Kitakata lunch or Ouchi-juku first. The starting base differs from Fukushima City or Iwaki stays.
2 days, 1 night
Route A separates keep exhibits and garden across two days; B pairs the residence with Nanukamachi. Choose between castle and garden visits or domestic spaces and shop walks.
3 days, 2 nights
Route A spends the middle day in Ouchi-juku; B uses it for Kitakata lunch. A requires train and Saruyu-go connections, while B uses return JR and visits the residence on the final day.
4 days, 3 nights
Route A visits Ouchi-juku and Kitakata on separate days. B skips Ouchi-juku for castle, garden, streets and residence time. Choose separate return services for each A day if you want both trips.
5 days, 4 nights
A combines castle and garden to allow separate Ouchi-juku and Kitakata days. B skips Ouchi-juku and visits one destination per day. Both choose the residence on the final day; check enough time remains before departure.
Accommodation and transport bases
Around Aizu-Wakamatsu Station
Stay near Aizu-Wakamatsu Station for separate trips to Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. Kitakata is a separate city north of Aizu, while Ouchi-juku is in Shimogo Town to the south. Check the route from your accommodation to the station.

Central Aizu
Consider central Aizu accommodation for the castle, garden and exhibits. First check your nearby loop-bus stop and return direction. Fukushima City and Iwaki are separate from Aizu; staying there changes these routes. Check whether meals are included when booking accommodation.

Yunokami Onsen
Consider Yunokami Onsen if hot spring accommodation is your trip’s focus. Check station access, shuttles and meals with each property. If staying after Ouchi-juku, continue to your accommodation instead of returning to Aizu-Wakamatsu and plan the next day’s departure separately.

Transport and meal planning
City day passes and Ouchi-juku combined tickets cover different travel
Haikara-san and Akabe cost ¥250 per adult ride or ¥700 for a day pass. Compare against ¥750 for three rides on the same day. One pass cannot cover a one-night route with two rides on each of two days.
The Ouchi-juku combined ticket includes one Nishi-Wakamatsu–Yunokami Onsen railway return and two days of unlimited Saruyu-go use. Routes starting at Aizu-Wakamatsu add ¥200 outside coverage in each direction, totalling ¥2,600 per adult. It does not also cover city loop buses and Kitakata JR. For hot spring accommodation, plan the next day’s return and accommodation connection separately.
Do not subtract these costs based only on another regional pass’s name. Compare actual rail and bus segments, validity and seat charges. For the Aizu Gurutto Card, check official railway/bus coverage and attraction-discount conditions separately. Itinerary subtotals exclude Gurutto Card discounts.

Kitakata return tickets and train
Two ¥350 adult paper-ticket Kitakata local-train fares, totalling ¥700, are included in route subtotals. Check both directions for your date before leaving and choose a return allowing time for food and the station walk.

Choose Kitakata lunch and Ouchi-juku meals separately
Kitakata days allow a ramen meal and return travel. Raimu’s main shop is number 19 on the official map, with listed hours 11:00–21:00 and last order 20:45. Visit after 11:00 and check the day’s menu, prices and temporary closures. Allow the station-to-restaurant walk, queues and return walk. Postpone eating until back in Aizu if your return train would be difficult to catch.
Ouchi-juku shops have individual opening days. The association says many open around 09:00–16:00; this does not mean the whole village shares those hours. Check your restaurant’s calendar and eat around the return Saruyu-go time. Ramen and village meals are excluded from route subtotals.

Castle exhibits and garden within the city
Tsuruga Castle offers keep exhibits, while Oyakuen is a garden visit. Some routes combine them, but choose separate days for longer exhibit time. Match loop-bus stops and direction from city accommodation.

Nanukamachi for city walks, Kitakata for ramen
Nanukamachi offers old Aizu buildings and shops. Kitakata ramen requires JR travel to another city. Choose a shop on the ramen map and check its opening days together with your return train.

Allow a day for Ouchi-juku return connections
Explore thatched houses and shops at Ouchi-juku beyond the city. The Saruyu-go transfer at Yunokami Onsen makes a planned return-trip day more suitable than a brief stop between city walks. Changing to hot spring accommodation also changes access and meal conditions.

Choose destination routes after arriving in Aizu
Aizu-Wakamatsu Station to the castle
Take a loop bus from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station to the castle entrance stop and walk about 5 minutes. Haikara-san and Akabe loop in opposite directions. Check the destination direction in your date’s timetable for the return to accommodation, rather than choosing only by bus name.

Aizu to Ouchi-juku
Take Aizu Railway to Yunokami Onsen, then transfer to Saruyu-go. Choose connections in both directions for your date and check previous-day reservation priority. From another city, set Aizu-Wakamatsu as your arrival in transport guidance and connect with this return trip.

How many loop-bus rides on the same day?
Adult city loop buses cost ¥250 per ride or ¥700 for a day pass. Three individual fares total ¥750, ¥50 more than the pass. Compare daily ride counts; these tickets do not include JR or Ouchi-juku travel.
Kitakata and Ouchi-juku costs differ
Current fare rules give adult Kitakata local-train paper tickets at ¥350 one way; two total ¥700 and are included in route costs. The ¥2,200 Ouchi-juku ticket excludes Aizu-Wakamatsu–Nishi-Wakamatsu; adding ¥200 each way gives ¥2,600. Meals, accommodation and extra attractions are separate.

Frequently asked questions
Must I move to Yunokami Onsen to visit Ouchi-juku?
A return train and Saruyu-go trip from Aizu-Wakamatsu is an option. For a hot spring stay, consider Yunokami Onsen but arrange access, shuttles, meals, luggage movement and next-day departures separately. Hot spring accommodation is excluded from Aizu return-route costs.
