Fukushima in 5 days: divide Aizu and day trips
Combine castle and garden to use separate days for Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. For a slower pace, skip Ouchi-juku and divide city visits across more days. Basic routes return to the same Aizu accommodation; substituting a Yunokami Onsen night changes train/bus connections and cost.
Choose a 5 days, 4 nights itinerary
Central Aizu, Ouchi-juku and Kitakata
Combine castle and garden on one day to allow separate Ouchi-juku and Kitakata days. Choose a final departure that leaves time for the residence, or move the visit earlier.

Skip Ouchi-juku and visit the castle, streets, Kitakata, garden and residence on separate days. Leave time after a final-day residence visit to reach the station and departure train.

Day 1: Nanukamachi → accommodation
Explore old buildings and open shops in Nanukamachi, allowing 60–90 minutes. Hours differ; early visits may cover only exteriors. Two buses cost ¥500, excluding meals, shopping, paid exhibits and activities. Return to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station afterwards and eat nearby or around your accommodation. Plan street time around that day’s buses.
- Aizu-Wakamatsu Station → Outside Nanukamachi Station
Take Haikara-san from outside Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and get off outside Nanukamachi Station. Choose a morning or afternoon departure to match your preferred shops’ opening times.
- Outside Nanukamachi Station → Nanukamachi streets
Walk from the stop to the streets, allowing separate time to reach your walking section. Plan 60–90 minutes for exteriors and open shops; only exterior walking is possible before shops open.

- Akabe stop outside Nanukamachi Station → Aizu-Wakamatsu Station

Check individual shop opening days. Shorten the walk in bad weather and return to the station or accommodation.
Day 2: castle → lunch → garden → station
Learn Aizu history in the keep during the morning, then walk the pond and medicinal-plant garden. Allow roughly 90 minutes at the castle, lunch nearby, then a same-direction loop bus for an afternoon garden visit. Include lunch, bus waits and travel. Three bus rides cost ¥750 in ordinary fares, compared with a ¥700 day pass. Adding ¥740 for both attractions gives a partial cost of ¥1,440 with the pass.
The 90-minute castle and 45–60-minute garden visits are planning examples. Keep stairs and outdoor movement between attractions remain; shorten visits in snow or heavy rain and prioritize the return bus.
- Aizu-Wakamatsu Station → Tsurugajo-iriguchi
Take Haikara-san from outside the station to Tsurugajo-iriguchi. Choose a weekday or holiday departure for your date allowing a morning keep visit. Include the roughly 5-minute stop-to-castle walk, 90-minute visit, lunch, bus wait and travel to the garden.
- Tsurugajo-iriguchi → Tsuruga Castle → same stop
Walk about 5 minutes from the stop, as officially estimated, and allow roughly 90 minutes for keep exhibits and surroundings. Have lunch nearby afterwards, then return to the same stop for your next bus.

- Tsurugajo-iriguchi → Oyakuen stop
After lunch, take Haikara-san continuing in the same loop direction and get off at Oyakuen. Choose a service for your date allowing a 45–60-minute afternoon garden visit ending before 17:00.
- Oyakuen stop → Oyakuen → same stop
Go to the entrance, allow 45–60 minutes and prepare for the return bus. Garden visits end at 17:00, with last entry 16:30. Arrive before that deadline to have 45–60 minutes. Shorten the visit and adjust costs if snow or rain makes walking difficult.

Day 3: return Ouchi-juku trip
Walk Ouchi-juku’s street of thatched houses. Get off the train at Yunokami Onsen and transfer to Saruyu-go outside the station. Passengers who reserve by the previous day have priority; ask about your preferred return services in advance. Choose trains and buses together for your date.
The ¥2,200 combined discount ticket includes one return railway trip between Nishi-Wakamatsu and Yunokami Onsen, plus two days of unlimited Saruyu-go travel. Starting at Aizu-Wakamatsu adds two ¥200 one-way fares outside coverage, totalling ¥2,600. This assumes local trains; special tourist-train seat tickets cost extra. Buy the combined ticket in advance at the travel desk inside Aizu-Wakamatsu Station or at Yunokami Onsen’s counter. The staffed counter operates 08:30–17:00. Allow time for purchase and platform access, checking temporary counter changes before departure.
- Aizu-Wakamatsu Station → Yunokami Onsen Station
Take a local train running onto the Aizu Railway line and get off at Yunokami Onsen. Exit the gates for the Saruyu-go boarding point outside. Distinguish arrivals and departures in your date’s rail timetable and allow transfer time.
