Sendai and Miyagi: where should you stay and what should you visit?

For both Sendai city and Matsushima, stay near Sendai Station and give each a day. Choose the museum, Zuihoden and castle site for Date family history and architecture, or Matsushima for ornate temple interiors and gardens. Umino-Mori Aquarium has Sanriku marine life. For hot springs in Naruko, compare a route with two nights in Sendai followed by two in Naruko Onsen.

Where should you spend your time: history, the sea or hot springs?

Explore Sendai city for Date Masamune's mausoleum, castle-site views and Date family historical material. Choose Matsushima to take your time in an ornate main hall and gardens, or Umino-Mori Aquarium for Sanriku marine life. For a Naruko gorge walk and hot springs, split your overnight stays between Sendai and Naruko and change trains at Kogota.

Itineraries by trip length

First choose between one Sendai base with separate city and Matsushima days, or a move to Naruko for hot springs. Each card gives daily transport, the return journey and costs included in that route.

2 days, 1 night

Choose history and Matsushima temples, or the aquarium and museum exhibits. Fitting sightseeing into both days is difficult if you arrive late on day 1 or leave on the morning of day 2.

3 days, 2 nights

Give the city, Matsushima and aquarium a day each, or replace the aquarium with more time for the museum, mausoleums and gardens. Last-day sightseeing requires time to return to Sendai Station before departure.

4 days, 3 nights

Cover the museum, mausoleums, castle site, Matsushima and aquarium. To reduce stairs, see route B, which replaces the mausoleums and castle site with separate Bansuisodo, Entsuin and indoor exhibition visits.

5 days, 4 nights

Stay four nights in Sendai for exhibits and temples, or two nights in Sendai followed by two in Naruko Onsen. Route B's Naruko gorge bus requires travel within that year's autumn operating period.

Accommodation and transport bases

Near Sendai Station

Stay near Sendai Station to give city history sights, Matsushima and the aquarium separate days. Check the walk from your accommodation to Loople bus bay 16 at the west exit and the Senseki Line platforms. Route B for four nights also moves to Naruko Onsen; plan the Kogota transfer and arrival at your accommodation together.

Matsushima · 松島 (near Matsushimakaigan Station)

Consider accommodation near Matsushimakaigan Station if you want a full day by the sea. Matsushima is a coastal area reached by train from Sendai. JR Matsushima and Matsushimakaigan are different stations; check which is closer to your accommodation and how to get there. Meal plans vary by property.

Naruko Onsen · 鳴子温泉 (near the station: the final two nights)

Stay two nights in Sendai, then two in Naruko Onsen, giving the gorge walk and Taki-no-Yu a day each. Check return JR journeys from Sendai via Kogota and the seasonal gorge bus for your actual travel dates. Ask the property you book about the walk or pickup to your accommodation, check-in and dinner conditions. Accommodation and access costs are excluded from the partial subtotal for the two-night Naruko route.

Choose meals and transport passes

Eating gyutan in Sendai

Grilled gyutan is a meal option in Sendai. Before leaving the city, look near the station; for dinner after sightseeing, choose somewhere on your way back to accommodation. Booking lunch in Sendai on your Matsushima day reduces sightseeing time. Meals are excluded from route partial subtotals. Check current prices and closure days with the restaurant you plan to visit.

Compare Loople and JR by the dates you will use them

Loople Sendai costs ¥300 per adult per ride or ¥700 for a day pass. Two rides cost ¥600 at regular fares; compare conditions if you take three rides or also use facility discounts. The Sendai Area Pass costs ¥1,420 per adult for one day and requires a valid non-Japanese passport for purchase and use. If using a pass to visit Matsushima and Nakanosakae on different days, you need a one-day pass for each day. It is not always cheaper than individual return JR tickets. Buy it at the JR EAST Travel Service Center on Sendai Station's third floor or a reserved-seat ticket machine with a passport reader. Return JR travel to Naruko is separate from the pass costs shown in the routes; aquarium admission and the paid connecting bus are separate too.

How should you divide Sendai city, the coast and hot springs?

Use Loople for Sendai history sights and the Senseki Line for the Matsushima coast. Naruko Onsen requires a train change at Kogota, so give the hot spring stay and gorge walk separate time.

Sendai Station and Bansuisodo

Consider Bansuisodo for a short exhibition visit after a meal near the station. The Loople and regular city bus stops share a name but have different routes to the entrance. Loople returns in one loop direction, so this is not a quick return trip.

Sendai history sights

Plan a Loople day for Zuihoden and the castle site, or centre your day on the museum for indoor history exhibits. Mausoleum stairs and the castle-site hill differ from exhibition visits; choose with your companions' walking needs in mind.

Matsushima temples and gardens

For temples and gardens in a coastal area, walk to Zuiganji and Entsuin from Matsushimakaigan Station. Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Main Line is different and farther from the temples on foot. To stay by the coast until dinner, decide whether to return to Sendai that day or stay in Matsushima.

Nakanosakae and Umino-Mori Aquarium

For the aquarium, take the Senseki Line from Sendai to Nakanosakae. Walk approximately 15 minutes from the station or use the paid connecting bus. The bus is not a free shuttle, and its fare is separate from aquarium admission.

Umino-Mori Aquarium: approximately 18 minutes by JR, walking route and ¥200 bus

The final two nights in Naruko Onsen

If a hot spring stay is central to your trip, compare the move to Naruko after Sendai in four-night route B. Travel via Kogota to the Rikuu East Line. Arrange the seasonal gorge bus and accommodation access separately. Return JR travel to Naruko is separate from the Sendai Area Pass cost.
