Where should you visit in Sendai and Matsushima?
Visit Zuihoden and the Site of Sendai Castle for Date Masamune's mausoleum architecture and castle-site views, or Sendai City Museum for Date family historical material. Site of Sendai Castle
仙台城跡
Climb to the Site of Sendai Castle for a view over the city. In the main enclosure, you can also see Date Masamune's statue up close. Come for a walk through the castle site and city views rather than a castle keep visit.
- AdmissionThe castle site is free. Charges at separate facilities, such as the Honmaru Hall, are excluded.
- HoursThe castle site is always open. Separate exhibition facilities have their own hours.
- Getting thereTake Loople Sendai from west-exit bay 16 at Sendai Station and get off at stop 6, Sendai Castle Site. Climb the stairs to Date Masamune's statue and the viewpoint in the main enclosure. Walking, stairs and the visit are extra to the bus ride time. The return continues in the same loop direction.

Zuihoden Mausoleum
瑞鳳殿
Visit Zuihoden for a close look at Date Masamune's ornate mausoleum architecture. The visit climbs a woodland approach and shrine steps, so choose a day when you are comfortable using stairs.

- Getting thereGet off Loople Sendai at Zuihoden-mae and climb the shrine approach. There are approximately 80 steps to the entrance and approximately 30 more inside the grounds. From Omachi Nishi-koen Station on the Tozai Line, the walk takes 15–20 minutes.

Sendai City Museum

Visit Sendai City Museum for Date Masamune and Sendai history. Explore the city's past through material left by the Date family, then visit the castle site.

- Hours09:00–16:45, last admission 16:15. Monday and post-public-holiday closures have exceptions. Closed 28 December–4 January. Follow the official calendar.
- Getting thereWalk approximately eight minutes from south exit 1 at International Center Station on the Tozai Line. By Loople Sendai, get off at Museum, International Center and Ryokusaikan and walk approximately three minutes.

Zuiganji Temple
瑞巌寺
At Zuiganji, look for the different paintings, carvings and ceiling decorations in each room. This suits travellers who want ornate temple interiors alongside Matsushima's coastal scenery.

- HoursOpens 08:30. Closes 17:00 in April–September, 16:30 in March and October, 16:00 in February and November, and 15:30 in January and December. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
- Getting thereTake the JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Matsushimakaigan Station, then walk approximately 10 minutes. Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Main Line is different and approximately 25 minutes away on foot.

Entsuin Temple

At Entsuin, take your time walking through four gardens with different atmospheres. You can continue to the gardens after visiting nearby Zuiganji's main hall.

- HoursApril–November 09:00–16:00; December–March 09:00–15:30. Open year-round. The facility recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before closing. Evening events are separate.
- Getting thereWalk approximately five minutes from JR Matsushimakaigan Station, or approximately 20 minutes from JR Matsushima Station. Distinguish the two stations when choosing a train.

Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium
仙台うみの杜水族館
Choose Umino-Mori Aquarium for a closer look at Sanriku marine life. Explore creatures from Japan and around the world, centred on a large tank recreating the Sanriku sea.
- AdmissionAdults ¥2,400; ages 65 and older ¥1,800; junior and senior high school students ¥1,700; elementary school students ¥1,200; preschool children aged 4 and older ¥700.
- HoursThe operating guidance checked on 9 October 2026 lists 28 September–3 November as 09:00–17:30 (last admission 17:00) and 4 November–19 March as 10:00–17:00 (last admission 16:30). Check other periods and temporary changes in the official operating guidance for your visit date.
- Getting thereTake the JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Nakanosakae for approximately 18 minutes, then walk approximately 15 minutes from the south exit. The Miyako Kotsu bus between the station and aquarium costs ¥200 one way per adult; it is not a free shuttle. Train and bus waits take extra time.

Taki-no-Yu
滝の湯
During a Naruko Onsen stay, Taki-no-Yu is a public bathhouse near the station. On the day you return to Sendai, decide whether to bathe around your return connection. The gorge walk is a separate visit on the previous day.

- Hours07:30–21:00; the city's official guidance lists last reception at 20:30. Check temporary arrangements for your visit date.
- Getting thereApproximately five minutes on foot from Naruko Onsen Station, at 47-1 Yumoto, Naruko Onsen. After bathing, allow time to return to the station and transfer at Kogota for Sendai.

Bansuisodo · 晩翠草堂
Choose this for a short visit to poet Doi Bansui's former home and exhibits. Loople returns to Sendai Station in one loop direction, so allow separate time for the visit and return.

Frequently asked questions
Should I get off at Matsushima or Matsushimakaigan Station?
From Sendai, use JR Senseki Line Matsushimakaigan Station for Zuiganji and Entsuin. Zuiganji is a 10-minute walk. Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Main Line is different and a 25-minute walk from the temple.
Do the castle site and Zuihoden have the same admission fee?
Ordinary walks at the Site of Sendai Castle are free; separate exhibition facilities are excluded. Individual Zuihoden admission costs ¥570 for adults and university students, or ¥460 under the applicable same-day Loople day-pass discount. The bus pass itself costs extra.

Is there a free shuttle from Nakanosakae Station to the aquarium?
It is not a free shuttle. The walk from Nakanosakae's south exit to the aquarium takes approximately 15 minutes one way. A Miyako Kotsu bus instead costs ¥200 one way per adult. If you choose the bus, check return times.
