Four days in Yamagata: how should I use the middle two days?
For temple steps and views followed by ropeway mountain scenery another day, give Yamadera and Zao a day each. For jellyfish exhibits instead of the temple, split Zao and Kamo Aquarium between two days. Both routes require checking Zao B ticket validity and ropeway operations.
Choose a 4 days, 3 nights itinerary
Temple first, mountain views the next day
Visit Yamadera’s stairs and Zao mountain views on separate days. Choose this route if you also want the city park and Bunshokan and can manage the stair climb. Check the Zao B set ticket’s official validity period.

Day 1: Kajo Park
Take an easy walk around castle remains and the park near Yamagata Station. Walk about 10 minutes from the west exit to Kajo Park’s south gate. Explore at your own pace, leave by the same south gate and retrace your route to the station.
Ordinary park walks are free; individual paid facilities are excluded. The park opens 05:00–22:00 from April to October and 05:30–22:00 from November to March. Shorten the walk in strong wind or rain and eat near the station.

The east-exit route to the East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes. It is separate from this itinerary’s west-exit and south-gate route.
Day 2: Yamadera
Climb Yamadera’s stone steps for a temple visit and views from Godaido over the landscape below. Take a Sendai-bound JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata to Yamadera Station. Walk about 10 minutes to the temple stair entrance, then climb towards Konpon Chudo and the Basho statue to the Sanmon ticket booth. The 10-minute station approach excludes movement within the grounds and ticket queues. Mountain admission at Sanmon costs JPY 500 for junior high school age and above, paid in cash.
Visit towards Okunoin and Godaido, then descend. Official guidance lists 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes return; allow roughly two to three hours with photos and rests. From the descent exit, follow the temple-front shopping street route on the tourism association’s 2025 map and signs on site to the station. Do not rush down the steps. If the visit takes longer, postpone lunch until after returning or choose a later train.
Return on a Yamagata-bound Senzan Line train. Mountain admission hours are 08:00–15:30 in October–November and 08:30–15:00 in December–March; weather may cause earlier closure. The ordinary adult train fare is JPY 260 one way or JPY 520 return, included in the partial subtotal. Check train times for your date separately. The treasure exhibition and inner worship at Konpon Chudo each cost an extra JPY 200.
- Yamagata Station → Yamadera Station
Take a Sendai-bound JR Senzan Line train from Yamagata to Yamadera Station. Look up outbound and return trains and fares together for your date. An ordinary adult paper ticket costs JPY 260 one way. The JPY 520 return is included in route costs; limited express and Shinkansen supplements cost extra.

Take a Yamagata-bound Senzan Line train from Yamadera Station. If the descent takes longer, check the next train instead of rushing.
If stairs are difficult, or snow, ice or access restrictions prevent the climb, choose Bunshokan and Kajo Park instead of the upper temple.
Day 3: Zao Ropeway
Ride the ropeway to Jizo Sancho Station for Zao mountain views. Buy the B set ticket at the bus information office outside Yamagata Station first, then take the Z90 Zao Onsen bus from bay 1 outside the east exit. The JPY 6,600 adult B ticket for June 13–November 3, 2026 includes return buses and both ropeway sections to Jizo Sancho. It is not sold on board or at other counters, and differs from the Chuo Ropeway A ticket. On November 4, only the return bus remains valid.
Walk about 10 minutes from the terminal to Zao Ropeway’s Sanroku Station. Take the Sanroku Line to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho. This is separate from the roughly five-minute route to Chuo Ropeway’s Onsen Station. Allow roughly two to three hours for both sections, transfers and views; check queues and suspensions separately. The route excludes hiking to Okama.
Descend by Sancho Line, then Sanroku Line. Walk about 10 minutes to the terminal and take the C2 bus to Yamagata Station. Choose your return first and allow time to descend both sections. Eat lunch after descending, or back in Yamagata if time is short. Do not add the JPY 4,400 ropeway return again to the B ticket. Hot spring bathing, meals, accommodation and JR travel on other days cost extra.
Without the set ticket, the reference calculation is JPY 1,200 × 2 for buses plus JPY 4,400 return to Jizo Sancho, totalling JPY 6,800. The bus fare is from the operator’s foreign-language guide; consult new information for current winter fares and services on the day.
