Three days in Yamagata: where should I spend day two?

Give Zao a day for ropeway mountain views, or Kamo Aquarium a day for jellyfish moving in the water. Match Zao’s B ticket validity and ropeway operations, or both return bus connections through Tsuruoka for Kamo.

A day of Zao mountain views between city walks

Add a Zao mountain-view day between the park and Bunshokan. Use the bus and two ropeway sections, checking the B set ticket’s official validity period. This is not a winter snow-monster itinerary.

Day 1: Kajo Park and Yamagata accommodation

Take an easy walk around castle remains and the park near Yamagata Station. Walk about 10 minutes from the west exit to Kajo Park’s south gate. Explore at your own pace, leave by the same south gate and retrace your route to the station.

Ordinary park walks are free; individual paid facilities are excluded. The park opens 05:00–22:00 from April to October and 05:30–22:00 from November to March. Shorten the walk in strong wind or rain and eat near the station.

  1. Yamagata Station west exit → Kajo Park south gate

Walk about 10 minutes from Yamagata Station’s west exit to Kajo Park’s south gate.

Yamagata city: free Kajo Park walks, seasonal hours and south-gate access

  2. Kajo Park south gate → Kajo Park walk, then south gate

Explore castle remains and the park at your own pace, then leave by the south gate you entered. Ordinary walks are free; shorten the visit in strong wind or rain.

Yamagata city: free Kajo Park walks, seasonal hours and south-gate access

  3. Kajo Park south gate → Yamagata Station west exit

Retrace your route from the south gate for about 10 minutes to Yamagata Station’s west exit.

Yamagata city: free Kajo Park walks, seasonal hours and south-gate access

The east-exit route to the East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes. It is separate from this itinerary’s west-exit and south-gate route.

Day 2: bus, Zao Ropeway and return to Yamagata

Ride the ropeway to Jizo Sancho Station for Zao mountain views. Buy the B set ticket at the bus information office outside Yamagata Station first, then take the Z90 Zao Onsen bus from bay 1 outside the east exit. The JPY 6,600 adult B ticket for June 13–November 3, 2026 includes return buses and both ropeway sections to Jizo Sancho. It is not sold on board or at other counters, and differs from the Chuo Ropeway A ticket. On November 4, only the return bus remains valid.

Walk about 10 minutes from the terminal to Zao Ropeway’s Sanroku Station. Take the Sanroku Line to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho. This is separate from the roughly five-minute route to Chuo Ropeway’s Onsen Station. Allow roughly two to three hours for both sections, transfers and views; check queues and suspensions separately. The route excludes hiking to Okama.

Descend by Sancho Line, then Sanroku Line. Walk about 10 minutes to the terminal and take the C2 bus to Yamagata Station. Choose your return first and allow time to descend both sections. Eat lunch after descending, or back in Yamagata if time is short. Do not add the JPY 4,400 ropeway return again to the B ticket. Hot spring bathing, meals, accommodation and JR travel on other days cost extra.

Without the set ticket, the reference calculation is JPY 1,200 × 2 for buses plus JPY 4,400 return to Jizo Sancho, totalling JPY 6,800. The bus fare is from the operator’s foreign-language guide; consult new information for current winter fares and services on the day.

  1. Yamagata Station east exit, bus information office and bay 1 → Zao Onsen Bus Terminal

Buy an eligible B set ticket at the bus information office outside Yamagata Station, then take the Z90 Zao Onsen bus from bay 1 outside the east exit. The set ticket is not sold on board or at other counters.

Strong winds, suspensions or full buses may prevent the same return journey. Refunds for suspended ropeway sections are handled at the sales counter; used bus fares are not refunded, and A/B tickets cannot be exchanged on site.

Day 3: Bunshokan, Yamagata Station and departure

Take time to see Bunshokan’s stained glass and restored auditorium decoration. Walk about 30 minutes from Yamagata Station to the main entrance. Building admission is free; allow roughly 60–90 minutes to explore. Retrace the same route for about 30 minutes to the station, then eat.

Bunshokan opens 09:00–16:30. It closes on the first and third Mondays, or the following day when those Mondays are public holidays, and December 29–January 3. For a bus via city hall, check routes, times and fares separately for your visit date.

On departure day, allow time to return to the station. Skip this visit if there is not enough time before your departure.

If a 30-minute walk each way is difficult, check alternative transport. On a closure day, swap the visit order after checking another day’s hours, or shorten the plan to a Kajo Park walk.

Day 2: change at Tsuruoka S-Mall, Kamo Aquarium and return to Yamagata

Spend a day on Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish exhibits. From bay 1 outside Yamagata Station, take a highway bus towards Tsuruoka and Sakata to S-Mall Terminal. Change at S-Mall bay 1 to a Yunohama Onsen-bound local bus via Kamo. Services via Zenpoji do not stop at the aquarium, so check the routing.

Get off at Kamo Suizokukan and enter the aquarium. Allow time for exhibits, lunch and rest, returning to the same stop before your bus. Hours are 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:00; restaurant guidance lists 11:00–15:00. Check menus and last orders on site. Do not add other coastal attractions.

Take a local bus back to S-Mall, then change to the Yamagata highway bus. Both return journeys and waits require a long day; choose connections in both timetables before departure. Ordinary highway fares of JPY 2,600 × 2, local fares of JPY 840 × 2 and adult admission of JPY 1,500 total JPY 8,380. Multi-ride discounts are excluded.

A weekday and weekend/public holiday example from the April 1, 2026 timetables is Yamagata Station 07:23–S-Mall 09:17, then S-Mall 10:35–Kamo 11:18. Return Kamo 14:26–S-Mall 15:03, then S-Mall 16:30–Yamagata Station 18:24. Transfer waits are 78 and 87 minutes respectively; delays or full buses can prevent connections. Check each operator’s holiday periods for August 13–16 and New Year, then match the timetables again for your visit date.
