Admission

Honmaru Square is free. Keep admission costs ¥520 for adults or ¥160 for primary-school pupils. Return ropeway/lift fares are ¥520 for adults or ¥260 for children, separately from keep admission. An adult using both keep admission and return transport pays ¥1,040. The lift is available from primary-school age upwards.

Opening hours

The keep and Ninomaru Historic Garden usually open 09:00–17:00, until 17:30 in August or 16:30 in December–January. Last keep admission is 30 minutes before closing: normally 16:30, 17:00 in August or 16:00 in December–January. Both the keep and Ninomaru Historic Garden close on the third Wednesday in December. Ropeway hours are normally 08:30–17:30, until 18:00 in August or 17:00 in December–January. The lift operates 08:30–17:00 and does not run in rain.

Walk Honmaru Square for views of Matsuyama, then explore the old castle’s interior structure in the keep. You can also enjoy the square’s views without entering the keep.

How to get to Matsuyama Castle

Get off at Okaido tram stop and walk about 5 minutes to Shinonomeguchi ropeway station. Take the ropeway to the upper station, then walk onwards to Honmaru Square and the keep. Allow time for this walk if planning to visit inside.

There is still a walk after the ropeway

Even with the ropeway or lift, you need to walk from the upper station to Honmaru and the keep. The keep has no lift and steep interior stairs. If those are difficult, enjoy views from Honmaru Square instead.

Can I enjoy the views without entering the keep?

Yes. Honmaru Square offers views over Matsuyama without entering the keep. The square is free; if you take the ropeway up, walk there from the upper station.
