Which Wakayama attractions should I visit?
Choose Wakayama City for castle interiors or Koyasan for temples. Split beach walks and cliff views in Shirahama; reach Nachi Falls by local bus from Kii-Katsuura. Sandanbeki Cave and the paid Nachi viewpoint charge separately from exterior scenery visits.

Wakayama Castle

Visit the keep during a Wakayama City day. Allow time to climb to it after leaving the bus and separate the visit from your moving day to Koyasan or Shirahama.
- FeesKeep admission costs 410 yen for adults or 200 yen for elementary and junior high school children. Children’s admission is free every Saturday.
- HoursOpen 09:00–17:30, with last admission at 17:00. Closed December 29–31 and temporarily for cleaning on December 9, 2026.
- AccessFrom JR Wakayama central exit, take an appropriate castle-bound Wakayama Bus service such as route 0 or 25 to Wakayamajo-mae. The ten-minute estimate covers the ride; climbing to the keep is extra. JR Wakayama differs from Nankai Wakayamashi.

Kongobuji
Kongobu-ji Temple金剛峯寺
At Kongobuji, look at paintings on sliding doors and a garden representing dragons and clouds with stones and white sand. Interior visits charge admission. If staying in temple accommodation, return in time for dinner.
- FeesAdmission costs 1,000 yen for junior high school students and older, or 300 yen for elementary school children; preschool children enter free.

- AccessFrom Gokurakubashi on the Nankai Koya Line, change to the cable car for Koyasan Station, then a mountain bus. Check services stopping at Kongobuji-mae and the actual walk after alighting. The route from Senjuinbashi differs.

Konpon Daito
根本大塔
Inside Konpon Daito, statues and painted pillars form a mandala. Other statues surround the central Dainichi Nyorai, with pillar and wall paintings completing the representation. Interior admission costs 500 yen for junior high school students and older; Kondo interiors charge separately.

Shirarahama
Shirarahama Beach白良浜
Choose this for a Shirahama beach walk. This course includes neither paid facilities nor swimming. For swimming, check the season, lifeguards and sea conditions separately.

Sandanbeki
Sandanbeki Cliffs三段壁
At Sandanbeki, see waves striking rocky cliffs. No ticket is needed for exterior sea and cliff views. For a close look at waves entering the cave, buy a ticket and descend by lift. Wave conditions vary with the sea on the day.
- FeesCliff views are free. Cave admission costs 1,500 yen for junior high school students and older, or 750 yen for elementary school children; preschool children enter free.
- HoursCave hours are 08:00–17:00, last admission 16:50. Mid-December maintenance may cause closure.
- AccessThe bus from JR Shirahama takes about 20 minutes, followed by a five-minute walk from Sandanbeki stop. Do not apply the same 20 minutes to departures from your hotel. Check return buses for your actual date.

Nachi Falls
那智の滝
Take a return bus trip from Kii-Katsuura and see the falls from the free ordinary worship area. Nachikatsuura tourism guidance lists ordinary worship 07:00–16:30. The paid viewpoint is optional; confirm same-day reception times first.
- FeesOrdinary worship is free. The shrine operator lists the separate paid viewpoint at 500 yen for adults, 200 yen for elementary and junior high school children and free for preschool children. Check same-day reception times.
- HoursTourism guidance lists free ordinary worship 07:00–16:30. The paid viewpoint’s current last reception time is unconfirmed; ask at reception on your visiting day before entering.
- AccessFrom Kii-Katsuura Station, take the Kumano Gobo Nankai Bus Nachisan Line to Nachi-no-Taki-mae. The three-minute one-way reception-to-viewpoint walk differs from the full walk after leaving the bus.

Engetsu Island
Engetsu Island (Engetsuto)円月島
View the island’s exterior and central opening from Shirahama’s coast. Boat experiences and island access are excluded. Check local access restrictions on your date, and separately whether sunset through the opening is visible on your intended day.
- AccessAlight at Rinkai and walk about five minutes. The roughly 16-minute bus ride from JR Shirahama does not apply to departures from your hotel. Check how long you need to return to Rinkai and take a station-bound bus in time for your JR train.

Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market
勝浦漁港にぎわい市場
This fishing-port market offers meals using local ingredients, including tuna bowls and sushi, alongside local products. On departure day, leave time after eating to return to the station. Check prices for your chosen menu and experiences separately.
- HoursOrdinary hours are 08:00–16:00, food orders until 15:30. Closed Tuesdays; check exceptions.
- AccessAddress: 7-12 Tsukiji, Nachikatsuura. Use actual addresses to check routes from your station or accommodation to the market entrance. On departure day, allow time to return to the station after eating.

Frequently asked questions
Is Nachi’s viewpoint three minutes from the bus stop?
The official three minutes is one-way from Hiro Shrine reception to the viewpoint. Check the bus-stop-to-reception route separately.
Do I pay cave admission just to see Sandanbeki’s cliffs?
Cliff views are free; the cave is separate. Choosing the cave adds ordinary admission of 1,500 yen for junior high school students and older, plus time for tickets and lift queues. A cliff-only visit excludes cave admission.
