Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass: three days, eligibility and exchange
Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass
The Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass covers designated routes around Kansai, Okayama and Tottori for three consecutive days. It is available to visitors and foreign residents of Japan holding a non-Japanese passport, and is separate from the standard five-day Kansai Wide pass.
Key stations
Shin-Osaka · 新大阪, Okayama · 岡山, Tottori · 鳥取, Takamatsu · 高松, Wakayama · 和歌山 and Kishi · 貴志 are key stations on the map.
The map also shows Kyoto · 京都, Osaka · 大阪, Kinosakionsen · 城崎温泉, Amanohashidate · 天橋立, Shirahama · 白浜 and Shingu · 新宮. Tsuruga · 敦賀 is reached on the mapped conventional railway; the Hokuriku Shinkansen is excluded. Airport symbols on this map do not include airport buses or the Kobe Airport Port Liner.
When does this pass suit your itinerary?
Compare it with individual fares for a short trip from Kansai to Okayama or Tottori while living in Japan. For Shinkansen travel to Hiroshima · 広島 or journeys lasting four days or more, compare other passes’ dates and coverage.
Who can use it?
You need a passport issued by a government other than Japan. Both Temporary Visitors and foreign residents of Japan are eligible. Bring every traveller’s passport when collecting passes. Do not buy multiple overlapping passes for the same period. Carry your passport during travel. One pass cannot be shared between travellers.
Prices and child fares
The three-day pass costs JPY 12,000 adult or JPY 6,000 child. Current Japanese terms define children as aged 6–11 on the payment date and adults as 12 or over. Check the agency’s actual selling price and order conditions separately.

Travelling with young children
Each adult or child pass holder may bring up to two children aged 1–5 free. A child pass is needed for the third or any additional child, for a child occupying a separate reserved seat, or for a child travelling alone. Infants under one year travel free.
Three consecutive calendar days
Validity runs from 00:00 on the start date to 24:00 on the third day, Japan time. If you remain on a train across midnight at the end of validity, basic-fare coverage continues until you exit the gate and train-charge coverage until you get off that same train.
Exchange your agency E-MCO at a designated counter
The E-MCO supplied by the agency is an exchange order. Exchange it at a designated counter for the actual pass before travel. It differs from WEST QR, whose boarding QR is used at the gate.
Covered routes
The Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Okayama includes Ordinary Car reserved and unreserved seats on Nozomi and Mizuho. Eligible limited-express, local, rapid and special rapid trains within the map are included. The map shows Chizu Express from Kamigori · 上郡 to Chizu · 智頭, Kyoto Tango Railway between Toyooka · 豊岡, Amanohashidate and Nishi-Maizuru · 西舞鶴, and Wakayama Electric Railway from Wakayama to Kishi. The Shikoku connection runs from Okayama via Utazu · 宇多津 to Takamatsu; other Shikoku destinations are outside the map.
Using covered buses
Eligible local West Japan JR Bus routes within the map are included; the Kanazawa area and highway buses are excluded. Take one numbered boarding ticket per person. When getting off, show the pass and put only the numbered ticket in the fare box; keep your pass.
Where to exchange
Exchange the E-MCO within three months of issue and no later than the day of use at a designated counter. The location table lists Kyoto Station’s foreign-traveller counter, Travel Service Center Shin-Osaka and TiS Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Osaka and Sannomiya · 三ノ宮. Do not use ordinary machines or station counters not designated for this exchange.
Reserved seats
Reserve after collecting the actual pass. Ordinary Car reservations are unlimited. Machines record up to six reservation marks; use a ticket counter once that limit is reached. Reserve before boarding a reserved-seat-only train. Compatible JR-WEST and JR Shikoku machines and JR ticket counters in the covered area, plus JTB and Nippon Travel Agency counters, handle reservations.
Agency-only sales and reservation timing
This pass is sold through agencies and is not a direct JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION product. Seats cannot be reserved before exchange. Collect the actual pass, then reserve through eligible machines or designated counters in the area.
Excluded routes and extra charges
Shinkansen coverage is only Shin-Osaka–Okayama on the Sanyo Shinkansen. The Tokaido, Hokuriku and Kyushu Shinkansen are excluded. Sunrise Seto and Sunrise Izumo are excluded, including Nobi Nobi seats. S Work cars require separate basic fare and train charges. For Green travel, basic fare is covered but the full Green and express charges are extra. Local-train Green seats need a Green ticket; A-seat needs a separate seating ticket.
Changing a seat or missing a train
The pass type and validity start date cannot change after collection. Change a reserved train at a JR-WEST, JR Shikoku, JTB or Nippon Travel Agency counter before departure. Cancel a reserved seat at a JR ticket counter before departure. On eligible services with unreserved cars, you may use an Ordinary Car unreserved seat if you miss your reservation. For a reserved-seat-only train, reserve a later service. Standing is permitted only on an eligible service offering it when seats are full at the time you request a reservation.
Cancellations and refunds
For an unexchanged E-MCO, ask the original selling agency for a refund within one year of issue. Fees and other conditions depend on the agency and product.
For an exchanged, unused pass, apply before its start date or during validity at the travel-agency counter where you exchanged it. A pass bought directly from a domestic agency must be returned to the original selling agency; card purchases are handled by the issuing company’s sales location. The fee is 10% of the sale price per person, rounded down to JPY 10, with a minimum of JPY 220.
There is no refund after use starts, or for service cancellation or delay. Lost passes cannot be reissued.
From purchase to boarding
Check your non-Japanese passport and three-consecutive-day itinerary. Distinguish this pass’s duration and eligibility from the standard five-day Kansai Wide pass.
Choose the Excursion three-day adult or child option at the selling agency. Its E-MCO is not yet a boarding pass.
Bring the order and every traveller’s passport to a designated E-MCO exchange counter. At Kyoto Station, use the foreign-traveller counter.
Choose your start date when collecting the actual pass. The start date and duration cannot be changed after exchange.
Reserve seats before boarding. Machines record up to six reservation marks; use a counter after reaching that limit. If a reserved-seat-only train is full, check seats on a later service.
At Takamatsu, show the actual pass at a staffed gate; the automatic gates cannot be used with this pass there.
On buses, take a numbered boarding ticket, then show the pass and put only the numbered ticket in the fare box when getting off.
If cancelling, contact the purchasing or exchange agency before use starts. Lost passes cannot be reissued.
Frequently asked questions
Can foreign residents of Japan use it?
Yes. Holders of a non-Japanese passport are eligible regardless of residence status, including visitors and foreign residents of Japan.
How is it different from the standard Kansai Wide pass?
The Excursion pass lasts three consecutive days and allows foreign residents of Japan. Check the name, duration and eligibility rather than selecting the standard five-day Kansai Wide pass.
Can I exchange at a Kansai Airport machine?
This product’s E-MCO needs a designated counter. The location table marks Kansai Airport JTB for domestic sales only, not E-MCO exchange.
Can I take the Shinkansen to Hiroshima or Kanazawa?
No. Its Shinkansen coverage is Shin-Osaka–Okayama. Sanyo Shinkansen sections west of Okayama and the Hokuriku Shinkansen are excluded.
Can I use automatic gates at Takamatsu?
No. Show the actual pass at a staffed gate at Takamatsu. The current Japanese conditions specifically name this station.
Can a JR station refund my exchanged pass?
Current Japanese refund rules direct unused E-MCO-exchanged passes to the agency counter where they were exchanged. Apply before the start date or within validity; no refund is available after use starts.
Are Ordinary Car reservations limited to six journeys?
No. Ordinary Car reservations are unlimited. The six marks are a ticket-machine limit; make further reservations at a counter.
