Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass: three days, eligibility and exchange

Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass

A separate three-day product for the covered Kansai, Okayama and Tottori routes. Holders of non-Japanese passports, including eligible foreign residents in Japan, can use it; it is not the five-day Kansai WIDE pass.

Places in this guide: Shin-Osaka (新大阪) · Okayama (岡山) · Tottori (鳥取) · Takamatsu (高松) · Wakayama (和歌山) · Kishi (貴志) · Kyoto (京都) · Osaka (大阪) · Sannomiya (三ノ宮) · Kansai-airport (関西空港)

A short regional trip, including eligible foreign residents

Compare this three-day pass for a short trip linking Kansai with Okayama or Tottori. It is a separate product from the standard five-day Kansai WIDE Area Pass: the duration and eligibility are different. A longer itinerary or a Shinkansen trip to Hiroshima needs another ticket comparison.

Passport and child eligibility

You need a passport issued by a government other than Japan. Both visitors and foreign residents of Japan are eligible, regardless of visa status. Reading this Australian page does not establish eligibility. Bring every traveller’s passport for collection and keep it with the pass. Do not buy overlapping passes for the same period.

The current Japanese conditions set adult pricing from age 12 and child pricing at ages 6–11 on the payment date. Up to two children aged 1–5 can travel free with each adult or child pass holder. A third young child, a child travelling alone or a child occupying their own reserved seat needs a child pass. Babies under one travel free. Seller prices and options are separate from the official JPY fare.

Three calendar days, not 72 hours from collection

Validity begins at 00:00 on the selected start date and ends at 24:00 on the third consecutive day. The start date and duration cannot be changed after exchange. If a train boarded on the final day crosses midnight, the fare remains valid until leaving the gates and the train charge until leaving that same train.

Shinkansen to Okayama and mapped regional connections

The included Shinkansen corridor is Sanyo Shin-Osaka–Okayama. Eligible mapped limited express, Local, Rapid and Special Rapid services are included, together with Chizu Express Kamigori–Chizu, Kyoto Tango Railway and Wakayama Electric Railway sections shown on the official map. Shikoku coverage is the connection towards Takamatsu, not the whole island. Use staffed gates on JR Shikoku sections.

Sanyo Shinkansen beyond Okayama, Tokaido, Hokuriku and Kyushu Shinkansen and Sunrise Seto/Izumo are excluded. S Work cars require separate fare and charge tickets. Green Car and paid A-seat travel require the applicable additional tickets. Do not treat every seat on an included train as included.

Exchange the E-MCO at a marked agency counter

This is an agency-only product, not a direct JR West online purchase. An E-MCO is an exchange order, not a boarding QR. Exchange it within three months of issue and no later than the travel date, using a counter marked for E-MCO exchange in this product’s table.

Source: JR West official transport conditions (Japanese) — Kansai WIDE Area Excursion PassSource: Excursion-specific agency exchange locations (Japanese)Source: JR West Excursion English guide (page information dated August 2024)

Listed locations include Kyoto Station’s foreign-traveller counter, Travel Service Center Shin-Osaka and the TiS Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Osaka and Sannomiya branches. Bring the voucher and every traveller’s passport. A domestic-sales mark is not an E-MCO exchange mark: JTB at Kansai Airport is marked for domestic sales, not E-MCO exchange. Do not assume a normal station machine or an unlisted counter can issue this pass.

Reserve seats after receiving the physical pass

Agency customers cannot reserve with an unexchanged E-MCO. After exchange, reserve eligible Ordinary Car seats at the appropriate counter or machine. Reserved-seat use has no overall count limit. Up to six reservation marks are printed on the pass; once that record reaches six, use a staffed ticket office for further reservations.

Book before boarding an all-reserved-seat service. If the train is full, ask staff whether that specific service permits standing tickets; this exception applies only where standing accommodation is provided. Otherwise, choose an available eligible departure. Do not apply direct WEST-TR pre-collection booking allowances to this agency-only product.

If you miss your reserved train, you can use an eligible non-reserved car on a covered service. For an all-reserved-seat train, obtain a new reservation for a later departure; it has no non-reserved car. Before your booked train departs, the listed JTB, Nippon Travel Agency and JR West/JR Shikoku staffed ticket offices can change the reserved train.

Included local buses and keeping the pass

Mapped West Japan JR local route buses are included; highway buses are excluded. Take one numbered ticket per person when boarding. On leaving, show the pass and put only the numbered ticket into the fare box. Keep the pass: it is not a disposable bus ticket.

Refunds depend on whether you have exchanged

Before exchange, contact the selling agency within one year of E-MCO issue; its fees and conditions depend on the seller and product. For an exchanged but unused pass, the current Japanese conditions specify the travel-agency counter at the exchange location, before the start date or within validity. The fee is 10% of the selling price, rounded down below JPY 10, with a JPY 220 minimum.

The older English guide describes JR station refund counters, which differs from the current Japanese conditions for travel from 1 December 2025. Follow the current Japanese product conditions rather than assuming any JR station can refund an agency-exchanged pass. There is no refund after use or for service unavailability or delays. Lost or stolen passes are not reissued.
