Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass: three days, eligibility and exchange
Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass
The Kansai WIDE Area Excursion Pass covers specified routes around Kansai, Okayama (岡山) and Tottori (鳥取) for three consecutive days. Foreign passport holders visiting or living in Japan can use it. It is a different product from the standard five-day Kansai WIDE Area Pass.
Places and stations
Shin-Osaka · 新大阪; Okayama · 岡山; Tottori · 鳥取; Takamatsu · 高松; Wakayama · 和歌山; Kishi · 貴志.
Which itinerary suits this pass?
Compare it for a short journey from Kansai to Okayama or Tottori if you live in Japan. For Shinkansen travel to Hiroshima or journeys lasting four days or more, compare the duration and coverage of other passes.
Who can use it?
You need a passport issued by a government outside Japan. Foreign residents of Japan can use the pass as well as travellers entering under Temporary Visitor status. Bring every traveller’s passport at collection and do not buy multiple passes with overlapping validity periods.
Prices and child fares
The three-day price is JPY 12,000 for adults and JPY 6,000 for children. The current Japanese conditions assess children as aged 6–11 on the payment date and adults as aged 12 or above. Check the agency’s actual payment amount and voucher conditions separately.
Travelling with young children
Each adult or child pass holder can accompany two children aged 1–5 free. A child ticket is needed for the third child onwards, for a child using their own reserved seat or travelling alone. Children under one travel free.
Start date and final day
Validity runs from midnight at the start of day one to midnight at the end of day three. If a train journey continues past midnight on the last day, the basic fare remains valid until you leave the gate and the train charge until you leave that same train.
A voucher is not a boarding ticket
An agency E-MCO is an Exchange Order. Exchange it for the actual pass at a designated counter before travelling. It differs from a WEST QR boarding ticket; do not use its QR code to board directly.
Included routes
The pass includes the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama, plus covered limited express, local, Rapid and Special Rapid trains. Covered sections of Chizu Express between Kamigori (上郡) and Chizu (智頭), Kyoto Tango Railway and Wakayama Electric Railway are included. Shikoku coverage is limited to the route towards Takamatsu, not the whole island.
Using included buses
Covered local routes of West Japan JR Bus are included. Take one numbered boarding slip per person. When getting off, show the pass and put only the slip in the fare box. Do not put the pass in the fare box.
Where to exchange the voucher
Exchange the E-MCO within three months of issue and no later than the travel date at a designated counter. The exchange list includes Kyoto Station’s foreign-traveller counter, Travel Service Center Shin-Osaka and TiS Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Osaka and Sannomiya. Do not use a general machine or a counter at an undesignated station.
Seat reservations
Reserve seats after exchanging the actual pass. Ordinary Car seat reservations are unlimited; after six machine reservations, use a counter for further bookings. Reserve before boarding trains with only reserved seats.
Sales channel and advance booking
This pass is sold through travel agencies and is not available for direct purchase through JR West’s online reservation service. You cannot reserve seats before exchanging it. After collecting the actual pass, book at a supported machine or counter within the area.
Excluded routes and extra charges
Shinkansen coverage is limited to the Shin-Osaka–Okayama Sanyo section. The Tokaido, Hokuriku and Kyushu Shinkansen and Sunrise Seto/Izumo are excluded. S Work cars require separate basic fares and train charges; Green seats and A-seat also require additional payments.
Cancellation and refunds
For an unexchanged E-MCO, ask the selling agency within one year of issue; fees depend on the agency and product. For an exchanged but unused pass, apply at the agency counter where you exchanged it before the start date or within validity. The fee is 10% of the selling price, with a minimum of JPY 220. No refunds are available after use starts or because of suspended or delayed services.
From purchase to boarding
Check your non-Japanese passport and three consecutive travel days. Distinguish the duration and eligibility from the standard five-day Kansai WIDE pass.
Select the Excursion three-day adult or child option through the selling agency. The E-MCO you receive is not yet a pass for boarding.
Bring the voucher and every traveller’s passport to a designated E-MCO exchange counter. At Kyoto Station, use the foreign-traveller counter.
Choose the start date when receiving the actual pass. After exchange, the start date and duration cannot be changed.
Reserve seats before boarding. After six machine reservations, use a counter; if a train with only reserved seats is full, check availability on the next train.
On JR Shikoku sections, including Takamatsu, show the actual pass at a staffed gate. Automatic gates cannot be used.
On included buses, take a numbered slip, then show your pass when getting off and put only the slip in the fare box.
For cancellation, contact the selling or exchanging agency before use. Lost passes are not reissued.
Questions about this pass
Can a foreign resident of Japan use this pass?
Yes. Holders of passports issued outside Japan can use it regardless of residence status. Both visitors and foreign residents of Japan are eligible.
How does it differ from the standard Kansai WIDE Area Pass?
The Excursion Pass is valid for three consecutive days and also covers foreign residents of Japan. Check the name, duration and eligibility rather than confusing it with the standard five-day pass.
Can I exchange it at a Kansai-airport ticket machine?
This product’s E-MCO must be exchanged at a designated counter. The exchange list marks JTB at Kansai Airport for domestic sales only, not E-MCO exchange.
Does it cover Shinkansen journeys to Hiroshima or Kanazawa?
The included Shinkansen section is Shin-Osaka–Okayama on the Sanyo Shinkansen. Sanyo travel beyond Okayama and the Hokuriku Shinkansen are excluded.
Can I use an automatic gate at Takamatsu?
No. Show the actual pass at a staffed gate on JR Shikoku sections.
Can I refund an exchanged pass at a JR station?
The current Japanese refund conditions direct unused E-MCO-exchanged passes to the travel-agency counter where they were exchanged. Apply before the start date or within validity; no refund is available after use begins.
