Where should I stay and what should I see in Miyazaki?

Stay near Miyazaki Station for train trips to Aoshima and the city shrine. Choose Aoshima for more time by the sea, or stay in Nichinan to give Udo Shrine and Obi a day each. Plan separate transport and accommodation for Takachiho Gorge to the north, choosing your boat date and checking parking first.

Coastal shrines, Obi’s streets or the northern gorge?

Choose Aoshima for an island shrine and coastal walks, or Udo Shrine to worship in a cave sanctuary. Obi has old town lanes and historical attractions, while the city museum has nature and history exhibitions. If gorge walks and boating are your main interests, set aside separate nights in Takachiho to the north.

Itineraries by trip length

Compare JR-and-walking itineraries for Aoshima, the city shrine and museum, and rental-car itineraries for Udo, stays in Nichinan or Takachiho. The southern coast and northern gorge lie in different directions.

1 night, 2 days

Stay one night in Miyazaki city and visit Aoshima and the shrine by JR, or spend one night in Nichinan and visit Obi and Udo on separate days by car.

2 nights, 3 days

Stay two nights at the same city hotel for separate visits to the coast, shrine and museum, or stay two nights in Aoshima and drive to Udo and Obi.

3 nights, 4 days

Spend three nights in the city and make separate JR day trips to Aoshima and Obi, or stay two nights in Takachiho with different days for a gorge walk and boating.

4 nights, 5 days

Give the coast more time with one night in Aoshima, two in Nichinan and one in the city, or fit two Takachiho nights between city stays. Plan any coastal visit on the return day from the north around arrival time and sunset.

Where should I stay?

Miyazaki Station and city

Stay near Miyazaki Station for separate JR trips to Aoshima and the city shrine. Plan Udo and Obi in Nichinan separately from city sightseeing. If driving, compare hotel parking locations and charges.

What should I add to the listed subtotals?

Even where general worship and permanent museum exhibitions are free, transport for the itinerary still costs money. For JR itineraries, add accommodation, meals and departure transport to the section fares listed for each day. For driving itineraries, add fuel and the charges at car parks you actually use to the rental price, as well as accommodation, meals and departure transport. Reference section fares differ from a quote checked across all the consecutive days of your actual trip.

Takachiho boats are charged per boat for 30 minutes, rather than per adult; check the date’s calendar price and add your actual parking fee separately. Compare coverage of the ¥2,500 adult regular-bus day pass only for a separate itinerary using buses. It excludes JR, highway buses and the direct Miyazaki–Takachiho service.

How should I choose JR return trains for Aoshima and Obi?

Take the JR Nichinan Line from Miyazaki Station to Aoshima Station, then cross Yayoi Bridge to the shrine. Distinguish these southbound trains from services to Miyazaki Airport. Check whether northbound trains from Aoshima or Obi go through to Miyazaki or require a change at Minami-Miyazaki. Choose outward and return trains and fares for your actual dates, leaving time to walk to the stations and wait for connections.

What should I check if I choose coastal buses?

The regular-route day pass costs ¥2,500 for adults, ¥2,200 for students subject to ID conditions, and ¥1,250 for children. It excludes JR, inter-prefectural highway/express services, the direct Miyazaki–Takachiho service, community buses and other excluded services. Distinguish the included regular Nobeoka–Takachiho route from the direct service departing the city.

Along the southern coast, compare regular routes linking Aoshima, Udo and Obi. Some Obi-bound buses do not stop at Udo, so check your date’s stops, outward and return services, and event diversions or suspensions with the operator. A late return bus from Aoshima does not mean Udo has an equally late return.

For a same-day regular-bus return journey between Miyazaki Station and Obi, compare the ¥4,480 ordinary adult return fare with the ¥2,500 day pass. The pass is cheaper for that return journey; compare the actual section fare again for a different starting point or one-way trip. Individual section fares such as Aoshima–Udo and the restricted-access walking detour from Udo’s stop to the sanctuary remain unconfirmed. This timetable alone does not establish an itinerary that includes a Udo visit. The 3-night/4-day itinerary A makes separate JR return trips to Aoshima and Obi without going via Udo.

How should I divide indoor visits and street walks in Obi?

A single adult ticket costs ¥300 for one facility; a combined ticket costs ¥800. Compare a visit to one attraction with visits to several. The operating preservation association lists six facilities on the combined ticket and History Museum hours of 09:30–16:30. If you arrive too late for an indoor visit, walk the streets around the castle instead. Obi Castle visitor car park is free for ordinary passenger cars; medium-sized and larger buses cost ¥1,000 per vehicle. Choose this designated car park, then check the walks to individual town attractions separately.

How should I prepare for Takachiho transport and boat bookings?

Distinguish regular buses via Nobeoka from the direct service departing Miyazaki. Arrange the final journey to the gorge separately too.

Check the date’s official booking calendar for the price of one boat for 30 minutes. Online reservations open at 09:00 fourteen days before use and close at 09:00 two days before, with advance credit-card payment required. Telephone and email reservations and cancellation waiting lists are not accepted. Check reservation-only dates and maintenance closures in your date’s calendar. General operating hours are listed as 08:30–17:00, with reception until 16:30, but sell-outs, water levels and maintenance can bring an earlier finish or suspension.

Reception is inside Oshioi car park 1. There is no dedicated or reservable parking, and a boat reservation does not guarantee a space. Walks from car parks 2, 3 and 4 to the boats take about 15, 20 and 25 minutes respectively; add parking queues, reception and the walk to the boarding area. Check boat operation and path access separately for the day.

How should I plan the areas I visit and meal times?

First choose between eating in Miyazaki city and making a day trip to Aoshima, or staying in Nichinan for Udo and Obi. Takachiho in the north requires a long journey, so allow separate nights from the southern coastal trip.

Try chicken nanban in the city or local food such as obiten while walking through Obi. Menus, hours and prices vary by shop. If staying at Aoshima or Udo until evening, check whether somewhere to eat will still be open after sightseeing.

Compare Southern Kyushu and All Kyushu Rail Passes for the designated JR sections. Udo buses, direct Takachiho buses, boats and rental cars cost extra; the Northern Kyushu Pass does not cover Miyazaki JR travel.

Where can I use a JR pass I already have?

Designated JR routes covered by the Southern Kyushu and All Kyushu Rail Passes include Miyazaki–Aoshima, Miyazaki–Obi and Miyazaki–Miyazaki-Jingu. Arrange station walks, Udo buses, direct Takachiho buses, boats and rental cars separately. The Northern Kyushu Pass does not cover these Miyazaki JR sections.

The Southern Kyushu Pass lasts three consecutive days; the All Kyushu Pass has three-, five- and seven-consecutive-day versions. For the three-night city itinerary with an Obi day trip, distinguish the four-day trip from the pass’s three days. The driving itineraries with stays in the north cannot simply be replaced by a JR pass. Check official passport, residence and Temporary Visitor eligibility. Decide whether to buy a pass by comparing the ordinary-ticket subtotal and any other JR journeys you will actually make.

How should I prepare to collect and return a rental car?

First check your booked collection branch’s address and hours, the driving documents required for every driver and payment methods. If using Toyota, present your booking, confirm the contract and expected charges, then inspect the vehicle with staff before leaving. Allow separate time for collection procedures and the drive to your first stop. If you book another operator, follow that operator’s conditions.

If arriving by air, allow time for immigration, baggage collection and travel to the rental branch. Get a quote using your first-day collection time, final-day return time, vehicle type, cover and extras. A one-night stay does not automatically equal a 24-hour rental.

Areas to explore on separate days and how to reach them

Aoshima and the Nichinan coast are to the south; Takachiho is to the north. Decide whether to make JR return trips from a city hotel or drive between local stays, then choose each day’s stops.

From Miyazaki Station to Aoshima

Choose a JR Nichinan Line train stopping at Aoshima, walk from the station to the coast and cross Yayoi Bridge. Check whether your return train goes through to Miyazaki or requires a change at Minami-Miyazaki.

Obi and Udo in Nichinan

In Obi, walk the streets around the castle and choose any paid indoor visits. At Udo, you still need to walk from the visitor car park to the main sanctuary and check the access-restriction notice. Allow separate sightseeing time for both places even when driving.

How should I compare transport passes and travel costs?

Covered JR sections on the Southern Kyushu and All Kyushu Passes include Miyazaki–Aoshima, Miyazaki–Obi and Miyazaki–Miyazaki-Jingu. The Northern Kyushu Pass does not cover these Miyazaki routes. Udo buses, direct Takachiho buses, rental cars and boats cost extra. The Southern pass lasts three consecutive days and the All Kyushu pass three, five or seven, so compare your whole trip with the days you actually use JR. You can also buy ordinary tickets only for the journeys you need. Check official eligibility and reserved-seat conditions, and include your JR journeys on other days in the comparison.

Do I need a rental car in Miyazaki?

If your main stops are Aoshima and Miyazaki Shrine, you can use JR and walk. For buses to Udo and Obi, first check your date’s frequency, return services and the walking route under Udo’s access restrictions.
