Where to stay and what to see in Miyazaki

Stay near Miyazaki Station for train trips to Aoshima and the city's shrine. Choose Aoshima for more time by the sea, or Nichinan to visit Udo Shrine and Obi on separate days. Northern Takachiho Gorge needs its own travel days and overnight plan; choose your boating date and parking and access arrangements first.

Coastal shrines, Obi streets, or a northern gorge?

Choose Aoshima for an island shrine and coastal walk, or Udo for a cave sanctuary. Explore old town streets and history facilities in Obi, or indoor nature and history exhibits at the city museum. If gorge walking and boating are your main goal, allocate separate dates for a stay in northern Takachiho.

Itineraries by length of stay

Compare JR-and-walking itineraries for Aoshima, the city shrine, and the museum, or rental-car itineraries for Udo, overnight stays in Nichinan, and Takachiho. The southern coast and northern gorge are in different directions.

2 days, 1 night

Stay in Miyazaki city for JR visits to Aoshima and the shrine, or spend a night in Nichinan and drive to Obi and Udo on separate days.

3 days, 2 nights

Keep coast, shrine, and museum visits separate from the same city hotel, or stay two nights in Aoshima with a driving day trip to Udo and Obi.

4 days, 3 nights

Stay three nights in the city for separate JR day trips to Aoshima and Obi, or spend two nights in Takachiho with gorge walking and boating on different days.

5 days, 4 nights

Spend one night in Aoshima, two in Nichinan, and one in the city for more coastal time, or put two Takachiho nights between city stays. Fit return-day coastal sightseeing to sunset and your arrival time.

Where to stay

Miyazaki Station and downtown

Stay near Miyazaki Station for separate JR day trips to Aoshima and Miyazaki Shrine. Keep a day for Udo and Obi in Nichinan separate from city sightseeing. If driving, compare hotel parking locations and fees.

Takachiho

Consider a Takachiho stay to see the rock walls and waterfall from both the walking path and a boat. It is far from Miyazaki city, so leave time for the round-trip drive and breaks. Check boating reservations and operating conditions for your chosen date, plus hotel parking fees.

What costs should I add to the displayed subtotal?

Transportation still costs money even when ordinary shrine visits and the museum's permanent exhibition are free. For JR itineraries, add lodging, meals, and departure transportation to the segment fares listed for each day. For driving itineraries, add fuel and actual parking fees to the rental cost, then include lodging, meals, and departure transportation. Reference segment fares are different from a quote checked for every consecutive day of your trip.

Takachiho boat prices are per boat for 30 minutes, not per adult. Add the price from the calendar for your visit date and fees for the parking lot you actually use. Compare the ¥2,500 adult regular-route one-day bus ticket only for a separate bus itinerary within its coverage. JR trains, highway buses, and the direct Miyazaki–Takachiho service are excluded.

How do I choose JR round trips to Aoshima and Obi?

Take a JR Nichinan Line train from Miyazaki Station to Aoshima Station, then cross Yayoi Bridge to the shrine. Distinguish it from southbound trains for Miyazaki Airport. For northbound trains from Aoshima or Obi, check whether they run directly to Miyazaki or require a transfer at Minami-Miyazaki. Choose outbound and return services and fares for your actual dates, allowing time to walk to the station and wait for transfers.

What should I check before taking coastal buses?

The regular-route one-day bus ticket costs ¥2,500 for adults, ¥2,200 for students subject to ID requirements, and ¥1,250 for children. It excludes JR, highway or express buses outside the prefecture, the direct Miyazaki–Takachiho service, community buses, and other excluded routes. Coverage of the regular Nobeoka–Takachiho route does not mean the direct bus from Miyazaki city is covered.

On the southern coast, compare regular buses connecting Aoshima, Udo, and Obi. Some Obi-bound buses skip Udo. Check stops, outbound and return services, and event-related detours or cancellations for your travel date with the operator. A late return from Aoshima does not mean Udo also has a late return service.

For a same-day regular-bus round trip from Miyazaki Station to Obi, compare the ¥4,480 ordinary adult fare with the ¥2,500 one-day ticket. The ticket is cheaper for that round trip; recalculate for other departure points or one-way travel. Individual fares such as Aoshima–Udo, and the detour from the Udo stop to the main sanctuary after the restrictions, remain unconfirmed. This timetable alone does not establish a workable Udo visit. Three-night itinerary A uses separate JR round trips to Aoshima and Obi without Udo.

How do I split indoor visits and street walks in Obi?

An individual adult ticket costs ¥300 for one facility; the combined ticket costs ¥800. Compare visiting just one facility with visiting several. The preservation association lists six facilities in the combined ticket. Its hours for the history museum are 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Arrive with time for the exhibits. If you arrive too late, skip the indoor visit and walk the streets around the castle. Obi Castle Tourist Parking is free for ordinary passenger cars; medium-size buses and larger pay ¥1,000 per vehicle. Use this designated lot, then check the walk to each town facility.

How do I plan Takachiho access and a boat reservation?

Distinguish the regular bus connection from Nobeoka from the direct service departing Miyazaki. Plan the final approach to the gorge separately.

Boat prices are per boat for 30 minutes; check the official reservation calendar for your date. Online reservations open at 9:00 a.m. 14 days before use and close at 9:00 a.m. two days before, with credit card prepayment required. Phone or email reservations and cancellation waiting lists are not accepted. Check the calendar for reservation-only days and maintenance closures. General hours are 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with reception until 4:30 p.m., but sellouts, water levels, or maintenance can end service early or suspend it.

Reception is in Parking Lot 1, Oshioi. There is no dedicated boat parking or parking reservation service, and booking a boat does not guarantee a space. The walks from lots 2, 3, and 4 to the boats take about 15, 20, and 25 minutes respectively. Add time for parking queues, reception, and reaching the boarding area. Check boat operations and walking-path access separately on the day.

How do I plan meals around the areas I visit?

First choose whether to eat and stay in Miyazaki city with an Aoshima day trip, or stay in Nichinan for Udo and Obi. Northern Takachiho involves a long journey, so allocate different nights from your southern coast visits.

In the city, try a chicken nanban meal; in Obi, you can pair local food such as obiten with a town walk. Menus, hours, and prices vary by shop. If staying in Aoshima or Udo until evening, check whether restaurants will still be open after sightseeing.

Compare Southern Kyushu and All Kyushu Rail Passes for designated JR routes. Buses to Udo, direct buses to Takachiho, boats, and rental cars cost extra. The Northern Kyushu Pass does not cover Miyazaki JR travel.

Where can I use a JR pass I already have?

Designated JR routes for the Southern Kyushu and All Kyushu Rail Passes include Miyazaki–Aoshima, Miyazaki–Obi, and Miyazaki–Miyazaki-Jingu. Plan separately for walking beyond the stations, buses to Udo, direct buses to Takachiho, boats, and rental cars. The Northern Kyushu Pass does not cover Miyazaki JR routes.

The Southern Kyushu Pass is valid for three consecutive days; the All Kyushu Pass has three-, five-, and seven-consecutive-day options. On a three-night city stay with an Obi day trip, distinguish the four-day trip from the pass's three-day validity. The driving itinerary with northern overnight stays is not a trip you can substitute with a JR pass. Check official passport, residence, and Temporary Visitor requirements. Decide whether to buy a pass by comparing ordinary ticket subtotals plus the other JR routes you will actually use.

How do I prepare for rental-car pickup and return?

Check your reserved pickup office's address and hours, the driving documents required for every driver, and accepted payment methods. If choosing Toyota, present your reservation, confirm the contract and expected charges, and inspect the car with staff before leaving. Allow time for pickup procedures as well as the drive to your first stop. Follow the conditions of your booked provider if using another company.

If arriving by air, allow separately for immigration, baggage collection, and travel to the pickup office. Get a quote using the first day's pickup time, final day's return time, vehicle class, coverage, and options. A one-night rental does not automatically equal a 24-hour charge.

Areas to visit on separate days and how to get there

Southern Aoshima and the Nichinan coast are in the opposite direction from northern Takachiho. Choose between JR round trips from a city hotel and driving to overnight stays locally, then assign stops to each day.

From Miyazaki Station to Aoshima

Choose a JR Nichinan Line train that stops at Aoshima, walk to the coast from the station, and cross Yayoi Bridge. Check whether the return train runs directly to Miyazaki or requires a transfer at Minami-Miyazaki.

Obi and Udo in Nichinan

In Obi, walk the streets around the castle and choose optional paid indoor facilities. At Udo, a walk remains from tourist parking to the main sanctuary, and you need to check the access-restriction notice. Even when driving, leave separate visiting time for both stops.

City chicken nanban and Obi's local food

For meals in the city, start with a dish you want, such as chicken nanban or Miyazaki beef. Obiten is fried fish paste from Obi in Nichinan. To add local food to a day walking Obi's streets, compare your sightseeing finish time with actual shop hours. Check menus and prices with each shop.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rental car in Miyazaki?

For Aoshima and Miyazaki Shrine, you can use JR trains and walk. For bus travel to Udo and Obi, first check services and return connections for your dates, plus the walking detour required by Udo's access restrictions. If renting a car, add fuel and parking to the rental price and allow time for onward travel after returning it.
