Where should you stay and explore in Miyazaki?
Stay near Miyazaki Station for JR day trips to Aoshima and the city's shrine. For more time by the sea, consider Aoshima; to visit Udo Jingu and Obi on separate days, look at stays in Nichinan. Plan a separate stay for Takachiho Gorge in the north, starting with your boat date, parking and transport.
Coastal shrines, Obi's streets or the northern gorge?
Choose Aoshima for an island shrine and coastal walk, or Udo Jingu for worship in a cave sanctuary. Explore old town lanes and historical attractions in Obi, or natural history and history exhibitions at the city museum. If gorge walks and boating are your priority, arrange separate days to stay in Takachiho in the north.
Itineraries by trip length
Compare JR and walking itineraries for Aoshima, the city shrine and museum, and driving itineraries for Udo, Nichinan stays or Takachiho. The southern coast and northern gorge lie in different travel directions.
2 days / 1 night
Stay in Miyazaki city for JR visits to Aoshima and the shrine, or spend one night in Nichinan and drive to Obi and Udo on separate days.
3 days / 2 nights
Spend two nights at the same city accommodation with separate coast, shrine and museum visits, or stay in Aoshima for two nights and drive to Udo and Obi.
4 days / 3 nights
Spend three nights in the city with separate JR return day trips to Aoshima and Obi, or stay two nights in Takachiho with walking and boating on different days.
5 days / 4 nights
Spend one night in Aoshima, two in Nichinan and one in the city for a southern coastal trip, or put two Takachiho nights between city stays. Plan coastal sightseeing on your return from the north around arrival time and sunset.
Where should you stay?
Miyazaki Station and city centre
The area around Miyazaki Station is convenient for separate JR day trips to Aoshima and Miyazaki Jingu. Keep visits to Udo and Obi in Nichinan separate from city sightseeing. If driving, compare your accommodation's parking location and fees.

Before arranging transport and bookings
What should you add beyond the displayed subtotal?
Free general worship and permanent museum exhibitions do not remove transport costs. For JR itineraries, add accommodation, meals and departure transport to the segment fares in each day's guidance. For driving itineraries, add fuel and the fees of car parks actually used to the hire price, along with accommodation, meals and departure transport. Reference segment fares differ from a search covering all your actual consecutive travel dates.
Takachiho boats are priced per boat for 30 minutes, rather than per adult. Add the fee from your date's calendar and parking charges separately. Compare the JPY 2,500 adult local-route one-day bus pass only for a separate bus itinerary. It excludes JR, highway buses and the direct Miyazaki–Takachiho service.

How should you choose JR return trips to Aoshima and Obi?
Take the JR Nichinan Line from Miyazaki Station to Aoshima, then cross Yayoi Bridge to the shrine. Distinguish these trains from southbound airport services. Check whether northbound trains from Aoshima or Obi run through to Miyazaki or need a change at Minami-Miyazaki. Choose both journeys and fares for your actual date, allowing walks to the stations and connection waits.

What should you check for coastal buses?
The local-route one-day pass costs JPY 2,500 per adult, JPY 2,200 per student subject to identification conditions, or JPY 1,250 per child. It excludes JR, inter-prefectural highway and express services, the direct Miyazaki–Takachiho service and community buses, among others. Coverage of Nobeoka–Takachiho local buses is separate from the direct city service.
On the southern coast, compare local services linking Aoshima, Udo and Obi. Some Obi-bound buses do not stop at Udo. Check stops, both directions and event diversions or suspensions with the operator for your date. A late Aoshima return does not mean Udo has an equally late return service.
For a same-day local-bus return trip between Miyazaki Station and Obi, compare the JPY 4,480 adult ordinary fare with the JPY 2,500 one-day pass. The pass is cheaper for that return journey; compare segment fares again for other starting points or one-way travel. Individual fares such as Aoshima–Udo and the diverted walk from Udo's stop to the sanctuary after restrictions remain unconfirmed. The timetable alone does not establish a feasible Udo visit. Three-night itinerary A instead makes separate JR return trips to Aoshima and Obi without passing through Udo.

How should you split indoor visits and street walks in Obi?
An adult single-site ticket costs JPY 300; the combined ticket costs JPY 800. Compare one indoor visit with several. The operating preservation association lists six facilities on the combined ticket and history museum hours of 09:30–16:30. If arriving too late for an indoor visit, walk the streets around the castle instead. Obi Castle Tourist Car Park is free for ordinary passenger cars; medium-sized buses and larger pay JPY 1,000 per vehicle. Set that car park as your destination and check separate walks to each town attraction.

How should you prepare Takachiho transport and boat bookings?
Distinguish local buses connecting from Nobeoka from the direct service departing Miyazaki. Arrange the final approach to the gorge separately.
Check date-specific boat rates per boat for 30 minutes on the official booking calendar. Online bookings run from 09:00 fourteen days before use until 09:00 two days before and require advance credit-card payment. Telephone and email bookings and cancellation waiting lists are not accepted. Check reservation-only dates and maintenance closures against your travel date's calendar. General hours are 08:30–17:00, with reception until 16:30, but bookings, water levels or maintenance may end reception early or stop operation.
Reception is inside car park 1, Oshioi. There is no dedicated or reservable parking, and a boat booking does not guarantee a space. From car parks 2, 3 and 4, allow roughly 15, 20 or 25 minutes' walking to the boats respectively, plus parking queues, reception and travel to the boarding point. Check that day's boat operation and walking-path access separately.

How should you divide regions and meal times?
First choose between eating in Miyazaki city with an Aoshima day trip, or staying in Nichinan for Udo and Obi. Takachiho in the north involves a long journey, so separate its nights from the southern coast.
Try chicken nanban in the city, or local dishes such as obi-ten alongside a walk around Obi. Menus, hours and prices vary by restaurant. If staying at Aoshima or Udo until evening, check whether somewhere to eat will still be open after sightseeing.
Compare the Southern and All Kyushu Rail Passes for covered JR journeys. Udo-bound buses, the direct Takachiho bus, boats and car hire are extra. The Northern Kyushu Pass cannot be used for Miyazaki JR travel.
Where can you use a JR pass you already have?
Covered Southern and All Kyushu Rail Pass JR segments include Miyazaki–Aoshima, Miyazaki–Obi and Miyazaki–Miyazaki-Jingu. Arrange onward walks, Udo-bound buses, the direct Takachiho bus, boats and car hire separately. Do not assume the Northern Kyushu Pass covers Miyazaki JR segments.
The Southern pass lasts three consecutive days; the All Kyushu pass offers three, five or seven consecutive days. For an Obi day trip during a three-night city stay, distinguish the four-day trip from a three-day pass. The driving itinerary with a northern stay is not a journey that a JR pass can replace. Check official passport, residence and Temporary Visitor conditions. Decide whether to buy a pass by comparing ordinary fares and any other JR journeys you will actually use.

How should you prepare car collection and return?
First confirm your booked branch's address and hours, driving documents required for every driver and payment methods. If choosing Toyota, present your booking, confirm the contract and estimated charge, then inspect the car with staff before leaving. Allow separate time for collection procedures and the drive to your first destination. If booking another provider, follow its conditions.
If arriving by air, allow separate time for immigration, baggage collection and travel to the collection branch. Get a quote using day 1 collection time, final-day return time, vehicle, cover and options. Do not automatically price a one-night stay as 24 hours.

Regions and routes to explore on separate days
Aoshima and the Nichinan coast lie south, while Takachiho lies north. Choose whether to return to a city base by JR or drive between local stays, then select each day's visits.
From Miyazaki Station to Aoshima
Choose a JR Nichinan Line train stopping at Aoshima, walk from the station to the coast and cross Yayoi Bridge. Check whether your return train runs directly to Miyazaki or needs a change at Minami-Miyazaki.

Obi and Udo in Nichinan
In Obi, walk the streets around the castle and choose optional paid indoor attractions. Udo requires a walk from the tourist car park to the sanctuary and a check of access restriction notices. Allow separate sightseeing time for both even on a driving itinerary.

City chicken nanban and Obi's local dishes
Choose city meals around dishes you want to try, such as chicken nanban or Miyazaki beef. Obi-ten is fried fish paste from the Obi area of Nichinan. To add local food to an Obi street walk, compare your sightseeing finish time with actual shop opening hours. Check menus and prices with each shop.
How should you divide passes and travel costs?
Covered JR segments on the Southern and All Kyushu Passes include Miyazaki–Aoshima, Miyazaki–Obi and Miyazaki–Miyazaki-Jingu. The Northern Kyushu Pass does not cover these Miyazaki journeys. Udo-bound buses, the direct Takachiho bus, car hire and boats are separate. Southern validity is three consecutive days; All Kyushu offers three, five or seven. Compare your full trip dates with actual JR days. You can also buy ordinary tickets only for the journeys needed. Check official eligibility and reserved-seat conditions, and compare JR travel on other days.
