Three nights: an Obi day trip or a Takachiho stay?

Stay three nights in Miyazaki city for separate Aoshima and Obi day trips without changing hotels. For gorge walking and boating on different days, compare one city night followed by two in Takachiho with a car. Takachiho requires a long journey north, so do not add southern coastal sightseeing on the same day. The JR itinerary's ¥3,880 reference ordinary-train subtotal per adult includes the Obi round trip. For the gorge itinerary, check open walking sections and boat reservations.

Separate days for Aoshima and Obi

Spend three nights at the same hotel near Miyazaki Station. Make separate round trips to the city shrine on day 1, Aoshima on day 2, and Obi on day 3, then visit the museum before leaving on the last day. This train-based itinerary keeps the two southern stops on different days without changing hotels.

Day 1

Visit the city shrine, then stay at the hotel you will use for separate Aoshima and Obi day trips.

  1. Miyazaki Station → Miyazaki-Jingu Station

Take a northbound train from Miyazaki Station to Miyazaki-Jingu. Check the destination and stops to make sure your service calls there.

  2. Miyazaki-Jingu Station → Shrine grounds

Walk about 10 minutes from the station to Miyazaki Shrine.

  3. Shrine grounds → Miyazaki Station and the same hotel

After visiting the grounds, return from the same station on a Miyazaki-bound train. Have a meal downtown and check in at your hotel. Check the next day's Aoshima round-trip trains and leave time to get off the island before sunset.

Day 2

Visit Aoshima and return to the same city hotel. This itinerary does not connect onward to Obi via Udo Shrine.

  1. Miyazaki Station → Aoshima Station

Choose a Nichinan Line train from Miyazaki Station that stops at Aoshima. Distinguish it from Miyazaki Airport-bound trains. If a transfer at Minami-Miyazaki is required, check the platforms and connections. Look up outbound and return trains for your date first, then plan to leave the island before sunset. The reference ordinary-train fare is ¥450 each way for an adult.

  2. Aoshima Station → Aoshima Shrine and return to the station

Walk about 10 minutes, or 800 m, from Aoshima Station and cross Yayoi Bridge to the shrine. Leave time for both the shrine visit and a coastal walk. Ordinary shrine visits are free; listed opening hours are 6:00 a.m. to sunset. Allow time to leave the island before sunset and walk back to the station.

  3. Aoshima Shrine and return to the station → Miyazaki Station and the same hotel

Retrace your walk to Aoshima Station and take an ordinary train toward Miyazaki. Services terminating at Minami-Miyazaki require a separate transfer, so check the final destination in the actual results. The reference adult fare is ¥450 each way. After arriving at Miyazaki Station, have a meal downtown and return to the same hotel.

Day 3

Walk around Obi Castle Town, then return to the same Miyazaki city hotel. Choose indoor facilities only after confirming that day's last-admission times.

  1. Miyazaki Station → Obi Station

Take a southbound JR Nichinan Line train that stops at Obi. Do not choose a Miyazaki Airport-bound train or an Aoshima-terminating train for this journey. Before departing, check stops, transfers, and the return service for your date. The reference adult ordinary-train fare is ¥1,090 each way.

  2. Obi Station → Obi Castle Town

Follow the preservation association's walking route of about 15 minutes from Obi Station to the tourist parking area in the castle town. Allow separately for walking from that area to each indoor facility's entrance.

    Station and driving access

  3. Obi Castle Town → Street walk and optional indoor facilities

Walk the streets around the castle and take a break. An adult individual ticket to the history museum costs ¥300; the ¥800 adult combined ticket covers six facilities. If arriving in the afternoon without confirmed opening and last-admission times, leave indoor visits out.

Walk Takachiho Gorge, then take a boat

Spend one night in Miyazaki city followed by two in Takachiho. This rental-car itinerary uses separate days for walking the gorge and boating. Return to Miyazaki and drop off the car on the final day. Visit the museum only if there is enough time for driving, breaks, refueling, car return, and your reserved departure service.

Day 1

Pick up the car and visit the city shrine, then prepare to leave for Takachiho the next day.

  1. Car rental office → Shrine parking and grounds

Drive from the car rental office to Miyazaki Shrine, confirm the official parking location, and walk the grounds.

  2. Shrine parking and grounds → Return to the car and city hotel

After the shrine visit, return to the parking lot and collect the car. Have a meal and spend the night at your city hotel. Advance boat reservations for day 3 close at 9:00 a.m. two days before use, so check availability before departing. On dates with same-day tickets, you can also compare on-site reception, but separately check reservation-only dates, sellouts, and suspensions.

Get an official rental quote using the actual day 1 pickup and day 4 return dates and times, same return office, vehicle class, coverage, and options. Three nights do not automatically equal a 72-hour charge. Ordinary shrine parking is free; hotel parking and fuel are extra.

Day 2

  1. Miyazaki city hotel → Takachiho hotel

Leave your city hotel and drive north to Takachiho. The official tourism estimate of about 2 hours 15 minutes from the city or airport excludes breaks, parking, and congestion.

  2. Takachiho hotel → Gorge parking and open walking section

After reaching Takachiho, drive to the gorge parking area. Park in an available lot assigned by the attendant and walk from there to an open section of the path. Boat reception and the path entrance may be different, so check the route from your lot to the open path.

  3. Gorge parking and open walking section → Same Takachiho hotel

After the visit, return to the lot you actually used, collect the car, and return to the same hotel. If the path is restricted or the weather is bad, shorten the visit or go back to the hotel.

Official Takachiho Gorge visiting guideTakachiho boat calendar and reservation rules

Add this day's gorge parking fee according to the lot used: ¥1,000 each at lots 1 and 2, ¥800 at lot 3, or ¥500 at lot 4. Official information lists lot 5 as free, but check its current operation and opening before choosing it. Walking time also depends on the lot. A listed free price alone does not establish it as an available alternative; recheck access for your date.

Day 3

  1. Takachiho hotel → Gorge parking lot

Travel from your Takachiho hotel to the gorge. There is no dedicated or reservable boat parking, and a boat booking does not guarantee access to Parking Lot 1, Oshioi.

Takachiho boat calendar and reservation rules

  2. Gorge parking lot → Boat reception in Parking Lot 1

Follow the attendant's directions to park, then walk to reception inside Parking Lot 1. Official estimates to the boats are about 15 minutes/700 m from lot 2, 20 minutes/1 km from lot 3, and 25 minutes/1.5 km from lot 4.

Takachiho boat calendar and reservation rules

  3. Boat reception in Parking Lot 1 → Boat and open walking section

Before your reserved time, allow for parking queues, walking, reception, and reaching the boarding area. Explore the gorge on a 30-minute boat ride. Those 30 minutes do not cover the full visit from parking to returning to the car. If high water or maintenance suspends boating, check which walking sections are open before deciding what to visit.

Takachiho boat calendar and reservation rules

  4. Boat boarding area and walking section → Parking lot used and Takachiho hotel

After boating and sightseeing, return to the parking lot you used and collect the car. Allow for the uphill walk and breaks, then return to the same Takachiho hotel for a meal.

Takachiho boat calendar and reservation rules

Online boat reservations open at 9:00 a.m. 14 days before use and close at 9:00 a.m. two days before. Check the official calendar for date-specific prices, advance or same-day ticket terms, and maintenance closures. Thirty minutes is the use time for one boat; parking, walking, reception, and the return are separate. Add the fee for the lot used: ¥1,000 each at lots 1 and 2, ¥800 at lot 3, or ¥500 at lot 4. Check whether lot 5 is open that day.

Day 4

  1. Takachiho hotel → Prefectural museum parking lot

Leave your Takachiho hotel in the morning and drive to the prefectural museum in Miyazaki city. Follow its driving directions via the Yanosaki intersection and west gate. Parking Lot 1 is in front of the main building, beyond the west gate.

After the visit, return to the lot and drive to a gas station and your contracted return office. Leave time for car return, travel to your booked train or flight departure point, and check-in procedures. If the museum is closed on your date, consider before departing whether you can swap a day 1 museum visit with a final-day shrine visit. Do not assume the southbound drive will bring you to the museum by its 9:00 a.m. opening.

The permanent exhibition is free; ask the operator about parking fees separately. Plan fuel for the return south and your contracted return time, then check the terms for refueling before return or the operator's fuel payment.

Admission and transportation cost scope: Required rental car, fuel, and parking: check for your dates and vehicle; paid boat extra

Included: Admission: ordinary shrine visits and the museum's permanent exhibition are free; ordinary shrine parking is free

Extra costs and conditions: Required costs: rental from day 1 pickup to day 4 return, fuel, parking, and day 3's per-boat charge; lodging, meals, and departure transportation extra; tolls extra if using toll roads

Boat prices are per boat for 30 minutes and vary by date; check the official reservation calendar. Gorge parking costs ¥1,000 each at lots 1 and 2, ¥800 at lot 3, and ¥500 at lot 4. Calculate car and boat costs per vehicle and per boat rather than adding them unchanged to a per-person admission total. Obtain an official rental quote using pickup and return dates and times, vehicle class, coverage, and options; add fuel and hotel and museum parking separately. Without a car, choose three-night itinerary A, which splits city and southern coastal visits into JR day trips and does not include Takachiho. To visit Takachiho, prepare separately for regular buses via Nobeoka or the direct Miyazaki service, plus access from the bus center to the gorge. Add tolls if using toll roads. Boating overtime costs ¥1,000 for every additional 10 minutes beyond 30 minutes. Check maintenance closures in the calendar for your date and confirm whether Parking Lot 5 is open.

Frequently asked questions

Does the one-day bus ticket cover the direct bus to Takachiho?

The one-day ticket for regular routes excludes the direct Miyazaki–Takachiho service. Do not confuse this with the covered regular route between Nobeoka and Takachiho. JR trains are also excluded.

Official bus routes and fares

What can I do if boats at Takachiho Gorge stop running?

If the walking path is open, you can explore the gorge on foot. High water or construction can also close the path, so a boating suspension does not establish that walking is possible. Check the official notice for open sections before visiting.

Can I use a JR pass to reach Aoshima and Obi?

Within their validity, the Southern Kyushu and All Kyushu Rail Passes cover JR travel between Miyazaki and Aoshima, Obi, or Miyazaki-Jingu. Allow separately for walking from the station to the shrine or town. Buses to Udo, rental cars, and Takachiho boats are excluded. This is different from Northern Kyushu Pass coverage. Check official eligibility, including a non-Japanese passport, residence outside Japan, and Temporary Visitor status.
