Separate settlement, castle, shrine and bath days

Give restored settlement, castle sea views, red shrine buildings and bathing a day each. Spend four nights in one Saga Station base for Yoshinogari/Karatsu/Yutoku/Takeo. Final Takeo bath requires margin for Saga return and onward departure.

Day 1: castle exhibits → Saga accommodation

See restored palace tatami spaces/modernisation exhibits, then walk around the castle. Allow 1–2 hours for building/exhibits, with meals separate.

  1. South of Saga Station → Museum entrance and exhibits

    Walk south towards the prefectural office to Saga Castle History Museum. Official walk 25 minutes; allow 1–2 hours for building/exhibits.

  2. History Museum → Castle surroundings and Saga accommodation

    Museum closes 18:00, with temporary closures too. After exhibits, walk around castle and towards Saga Station for dinner, returning to the same accommodation. Entry is free; optional donations are excluded from costs.

Day 2: Yoshinogari → Saga accommodation

Spend time on Yoshinogari ruins/lunch, then return to Saga. Focus on the eastern ruins area in this large park.

    Take an ordinary train from Saga towards Tosu and alight at Yoshinogari-Koen. Choose a direct service and Saga return in JR’s official search. Adult single JPY 340; return 680 is included.

  2. Yoshinogari-Koen Station → East entrance → ruins visit

    Official station walk to the east entrance is about 15 minutes. Allow morning-to-afternoon ruins/lunch time, adjusting scope to your pace. Adult admission JPY 460. April–May/September–March 09:00–17:00; June–August 09:00–18:00. See attraction guidance for closures.

  3. Park east entrance → Yoshinogari-Koen Station

    Leave the east entrance for your return train and retrace to Yoshinogari-Koen. Beyond the official 15-minute walk, allow crossings, gates and boarding preparation.

  4. Yoshinogari-Koen Station → Saga Station

    Take a Kohoku-bound ordinary train stopping at Saga and alight there. Adult single JPY 340; check date-specific operation/platform in JR’s search/station signs.

Allow both entrance walks and visits separately. Check temporary park closures/trains and leave for your selected return.

Day 3: Karatsu Castle → Saga accommodation

See castle/sea views, then return to Saga. Official north-exit-to-castle walk 25 minutes; climbing, visiting and lunch take extra time.

  1. Saga Station → Karatsu Station

    Take a Nishi-Karatsu-bound ordinary train and alight at Karatsu. Adult Saga–Karatsu single JPY 1,300; choose both directions officially for your date. On 8 December 2026, some daytime Saga–Nishi-Karatsu trains are suspended for track works without replacement buses. Confirm operating returns that day or change visit date if connections fail.

  2. Karatsu Station north exit → Karatsu Castle ascent entrance

    Use Karatsu City’s official access map and walk towards the castle. Official north-exit walk 25 minutes. Allow crossings/wayfinding separately from ascent/visits.

  3. Ascent entrance → Keep visit

    There are 222 stone steps from ascent entrance to keep. The park lift on the left costs JPY 100 per adult one way; internal keep stairs remain even using it. Castle 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:40, adult 500. Check 29–31 December/temporary closures.

  4. Karatsu Castle → Lunch and Karatsu Station north exit

    Descend by steps/park lift, eat lunch and retrace to Karatsu Station. Beyond 25 minutes walking, allow food, crossings, gates and boarding. Leave the castle around your JR return.

  5. Karatsu Station → Saga Station

    Return on an ordinary train stopping at Saga, adult single JPY 1,300. Select a date-specific return officially and rest in the same Saga accommodation.

Station/castle return walks total about 50 minutes, plus steps, visiting and lunch. If long walks/stairs are difficult, compare the four-day Arita course. Allow extra rests in heavy rain/heat and check JR/castle closures.

Day 4: direct bus to Yutoku Inari and back to Saga

Use direct return buses from Saga Station Bus Centre to the shrine. Distinguish weekday from weekend/public-holiday tables.

    Choose a direct shrine-bound service on Yutoku Bus’s Saga Line, without changing at Hizen-Kashima. Adult single JPY 1,100, return 2,200. Choose both directions using weekday/weekend/public-holiday tables.

  2. Yutoku-Jinja-Mae stop → Approach shopping street and shrine entrance

    Walk about 5 minutes along the approach shops to the shrine. Worship/food take extra time. Return through the same street to the stop.

  3. Shrine entrance → Shrine visit and lunch

    Plan daytime worship/lunch within Kyushu Tourism’s 08:30–16:30 guidance. Allow 1–2 hours for grounds/main shrine; mountain-top Okunoin is excluded. General worship free; museum/garden/lift separate. Check shrine notices for high-area access on your date.

  4. Yutoku-Jinja-Mae → Saga Station Bus Centre

    After worship/lunch, take a direct Saga Station Bus Centre service from Yutoku-Jinja-Mae. Return all the way without alighting at Hizen-Kashima. Set visits around your date’s return; museum/garden/lift costs extra.

Choose a direct Saga bus after worship/lunch. This course visits within Kyushu Tourism’s 08:30–16:30 guidance. Museum/garden 09:00–16:30; Okunoin excluded. Allow shrine-to-stop walking and bus waits too.

Day 5: Motoyu bath and departure

Bathe/have lunch in Takeo, then return to Saga.

  2. Takeo-Onsen north exit → Hot-spring streets and Motoyu entrance

    Walk towards hot-spring streets/Romon and locate Motoyu. The association gives about 10 minutes to the streets and 15 to Romon; prefectural tourism gives 10 to Motoyu. Wayfinding/reception are extra. Address: 7425 Takeo, Takeo-cho.

  3. Motoyu entrance → Reception and bathing

    Allow around 1 hour for bathing/rest. Adult bath JPY 500; 06:30–23:45, final reception 23:00. Check official restrictions including tattoos/intoxication. Private baths, towels and Romon upper-floor visits are separate.

  4. Motoyu and hot-spring streets → Lunch and walk → Takeo-Onsen Station

    After bathing, eat/rest in the hot-spring streets. Retrace to Takeo-Onsen for your train, allowing wayfinding, crossings and gates separately.

  5. Takeo-Onsen Station → Saga Station

    Take a Hakata-bound Midori stopping at Saga. Adult non-reserved single JPY 1,410; check operation, seats and platform for your date.

Check Motoyu restrictions/reception deadline. Allow hot-spring-street/Romon walks and bath time separately; return around your train.

Included items: The subtotal includes the JPY 1,140 Yoshinogari day, Karatsu JR singles totalling JPY 2,600 with JPY 500 castle admission, the JPY 3,320 Takeo bath day and JPY 2,200 for direct return buses to Yutoku.

Costs outside the subtotal: Airport buses, accommodation, meals, flights, bag storage, towels, extra baths, special exhibitions and shopping cost extra. Return park-lift travel costs JPY 200, and changed trains or seats may add fares. Yutoku museum, garden and lift fees are separate.

Two restful Takeo nights, then back to Saga

Spend one Saga Station night, two Takeo-Onsen nights, then another Saga night. Day 3 uses Motoyu, food and rest in hot-spring streets. Visit Yoshinogari on day 4 only if Saga arrival leaves enough return-train/park time.

Day 1: castle exterior → Saga accommodation

Walk castle surroundings/exterior, leaving exhibits for the final day. If outdoor walks are difficult, swap the exhibition day.

    Walk about 25 minutes south towards Honmaru History Museum and explore castle surroundings. Today covers exteriors/walks; exhibits remain for the final day.

    Eat dinner towards the station and stay in Saga. If outdoor walking is difficult, see exhibits today and reduce final sightseeing.

Day 2: move to Takeo accommodation and walk the hot-spring streets

Move to Takeo and stay in new accommodation. If time remains, walk around Romon/hot-spring streets.

  2. Takeo-Onsen north exit → Hot-spring streets and Romon surroundings

    Walk from north exit towards streets/Romon. Association guidance gives 10 minutes to streets, 15 to Romon. Add photo/rest time. Today has surrounding walks; Motoyu bathing is tomorrow.

Check Saga→Takeo trains for the visiting date. Today has walks/accommodation, without Arita or ceramics-museum visits.

Day 3: Motoyu bath and rest → same accommodation

Stay in Takeo for bathing, hot-spring-street food and rest.

  1. Romon surroundings → Motoyu entrance and reception

    Motoyu is at 7425 Takeo, Oaza Takeo, Takeo-cho, Takeo City. Follow its signs from Romon and check operation. 06:30–23:45, last reception 23:00, adult bath 500. Leave bath/rest/accommodation-return time rather than arriving at the reception deadline.

  2. Motoyu → Outside after bathing and rest

    JPY 500 covers one adult Motoyu bath. Allow around 1 hour, adjusting to your needs. Body soap/shampoo-conditioner are supplied. Official rules restrict tattoos, intoxication and misconduct; check first. Towels, paid Romon visits and accommodation baths are excluded. Afterwards, eat in the hot-spring streets and rest at the same Takeo accommodation.

Check restrictions/reception deadline. Today is restful: return to the same accommodation after bath/food. Check its location, bath and meal hours in booking conditions separately.

Day 4: return to Saga, then Yoshinogari

Return to Saga before visiting Yoshinogari. Check return trains, east-entrance walks and park time together. For late Saga arrival, omit Yoshinogari and rest in Saga.

Check enough return/park time after Saga arrival. East-entrance walk is 15 minutes one way. For bag storage, check your accommodation’s acceptance and detour separately. Check temporary closures/return trains too.

Day 5: Honmaru exhibits and departure

See restored palace tatami spaces/modernisation exhibits, then walk around the castle. Allow 1–2 hours for building/exhibits, with meals separate.

Does the Takeo-stay course include Arita?

No. Its nights are one Saga night, two Takeo nights and one Saga night; one JPY 500 Motoyu bath is included. Accommodation/its baths and extra transport are separate.

Do direct Yutoku buses have the same weekend times?

Weekday/weekend-public-holiday tables differ. Check both Saga Station Bus Centre→shrine and return on Saga Line. This direct route does not change at Hizen-Kashima.

Should I use a five-day JR pass for a Takeo stay?

Do not decide by trip length alone. The Takeo-stay course uses Saga↔Takeo on days 2/4 and Yoshinogari return on day 4, without JR on day 3. Compare tickets/pass prices and consecutive validity. Accommodation, baths and buses remain separate.
