Day 3 · Karatsu Castle → lodging in Saga

See Karatsu Castle and sea views, then return to your lodging in Saga. The castle is about a 25-minute walk from the station's north exit. Allow separate time for climbing to and from the castle, sightseeing, and lunch.

  2. Karatsu Station north exit → Karatsu Castle uphill approach entrance

    Follow Karatsu City's official access map toward the castle. Official guidance lists about a 25-minute walk from the station's north exit. Leave extra time for crossings and directions, plus separate time to climb and tour the castle.

    There are 222 stone steps from the approach entrance to the keep. The park elevator on the left-hand route costs an extra ¥100 per adult each way; stairs inside the keep remain even if you take it. Castle hours are 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, last admission 4:40 PM; adult admission is ¥500. Check the December 29–31 closure and temporary changes.

  4. Karatsu Castle → Lunch · Karatsu Station north exit

    After your visit, go down by the stairs or park elevator and have lunch. Follow your walking route back to Karatsu Station. Beyond the approximately 25-minute walk, allow time for lunch, crossings, ticket gates, and boarding. Leave the castle in time for your return JR service.

  5. Karatsu Station → Saga Station

    Return on a local train that stops at Saga. Adult fare is ¥1,300 one way. Choose your return train in the official JR search for your date and stay at the same lodging in Saga.

The station–castle round-trip walk takes about 50 minutes; allow additional time for the stairs, castle visit, and lunch. Compare the 3-night / 4-day itinerary with Arita exhibitions if long walks or stairs are difficult for you. Add breaks in heavy rain or heat, and check JR service and castle closing days.

Day 4 · Direct bus to Yutoku Inari, then back to Saga

Travel directly from Saga Station Bus Center to Yutoku Inari Shrine and back. Choose both directions using the correct weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable.

Relax for two nights in Takeo, then return to Saga

Stay one night near Saga Station, two nights near Takeo-Onsen Station, then return to Saga for one night. On day 3, bathe at Motoyu, eat in the hot spring district, and relax. Visit Yoshinogari on day 4 only if you have enough time for the round-trip trains and sightseeing after returning to Saga.

See the castle exterior and walk around the grounds, leaving the exhibitions for your final day. Swap the exhibition day if outdoor walking is difficult.

Day 3 · Takeo Motoyu and relaxation → the same lodging

Stay in Takeo for a restful day of bathing at Motoyu and meals in the hot spring district.

Towels, paid Romon tours, and baths at your lodging are outside this ¥500 fee. After bathing, eat in the hot spring district and return to the same lodging in Takeo to rest.

Does the Takeo overnight itinerary include Arita?

No Arita visit is included. It stays 1 night in Saga, 2 in Takeo, and 1 in Saga. One Motoyu bath at ¥500 is included in the itinerary subtotal. Lodging, baths at your lodging, and additional transportation cost extra.

Does the direct Yutoku bus run at the same times on weekends?

Weekday and weekend/public holiday timetables differ. Check both Saga Station Bus Center → Yutoku Shrine and Yutoku Shrine → Saga Station Bus Center on Yutoku Bus's Saga Line. This itinerary uses a direct route without a transfer at Hizen-Kashima Station.

Is a 5-day JR pass better when staying in Takeo?

Do not decide from trip length alone. The Takeo overnight itinerary travels between Saga and Takeo on days 2 and 4, with a Yoshinogari round trip on day 4 and no JR travel on day 3. Compare individual fares with the pass price and consecutive validity. Lodging, bathing, and buses cost extra even with a pass.
