Sendai Area Pass: one-day prices, passport rules and buses

SENDAI AREA PASS

The Sendai Area Pass · 仙台エリアパス is a one-day ticket for specified JR routes, the Sendai Airport Access Line, Sendai Subway, city buses and Loople Sendai, among other included services. You need a valid non-Japanese passport when buying and using the pass.

When is this pass useful?

Compare it with individual fares for a day combining central Sendai with journeys on covered JR routes, such as Matsushima or Yamadera. For two consecutive days, compare the Sendai Marugoto Pass instead. If a facility discount influences your choice, check that the facility is currently open.

Who can use it?

You must carry a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan when buying and using the pass. Present your original passport at purchase.

Official prices and child fares

These are the operator’s prices in Japanese yen, separate from reseller prices. Adults are aged 12 or above; child fares apply to ages 6–11.

Which date is the pass valid for?

The pass is valid for one day. Choose your travel date and check the date printed on it.

Which railway routes are covered?

Coverage includes the specified JR routes connecting Sendai (仙台), Matsushima (松島), Matsushimakaigan (松島海岸), Yamadera (山寺) and Shiroishi (白石), the whole Sendai Airport Access Line and all Sendai Subway lines. The Abukuma (あぶくま) Express is included between Tsukinoki (槻木) and Abukuma. Check the exact boundaries on the official coverage map.

How do I use it on buses?

Loople Sendai and Sendai City buses are included, excluding the Rakuten shuttle bus. Miyagi Kotsu coverage is limited to the specified route between Sendai Station and Akiu Otaki. Show the pass to the driver when getting off.

Where can I buy it?

Buy it at the JR East Travel Service Center on the third floor of Sendai Station, or a reserved-seat ticket machine with a passport reader at the station. Sales are available throughout the year, from one month before your intended travel date.

Date changes, lost passes and refunds

An unused pass whose validity has not expired can have its date changed once at the JR East Travel Service Center. Lost passes are not reissued. Ask the place of purchase about the refund conditions that apply.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Choose your travel date and railway, bus and subway journeys, then check the boundaries on the official map.

  2. Take your original passport to the JR East Travel Service Center on the third floor of Sendai Station or use a reserved-seat ticket machine with a passport reader there.

  3. On JR, Sendai Subway and the Sendai Airport Access Line, insert the paper pass into the automatic gate and retrieve it after passing through.

  4. On buses, show it to the driver when getting off. On the Abukuma Express, show it when both boarding and getting off.

Questions about this pass

Can I leave my passport at my accommodation?

You must carry a valid non-Japanese passport when using the pass as well as when buying it.

Does it cover the train from Sendai Airport to the city?

The whole Sendai Airport Access Line is included. Check where you can buy the pass separately from the airport route it covers.

Do I insert the pass into a machine on a bus?

Show it to the driver when getting off a bus. Insert it into the automatic gates for JR, Sendai Subway and the airport line. On the Abukuma Express, show it when boarding and getting off.

Can I change the travel date?

You can change it once at the JR East Travel Service Center if the pass is unused and its validity has not expired.
